I became a Republican because my parents were Democrats. I believed in fiscal responsibility. Then I didn't pay attention for 20 years. I thought I was moderate, but now I find out I'm liberal. So now I'm a Democrat. Go figure.

McCain & Lobbyists

Tue May 20, 2008 at 08:58:07 AM PDT

I got a MoveOn email asking me to call John McCain's campaign headquarters (I'm sure many of you did as well). I prefer to send emails, so I went to the McCain website and used their Contact Us link to submit a "general question". Here is the text (below the fold):

WA LD-47: More than 2-1 for Obama

Sat Apr 05, 2008 at 04:42:48 PM PDT

My husband and I attended the WA 47th Legislative District caucus today. The 47th LD is sending 38 delegates and 19 alternates to the Congressional District caucus in May.

The whole process took substantially longer than had been predicted, but there were refreshments provided (donations encouraged), and plenty of seating. It got a little warm, but it wasn't too bad. Although the start of registration had been identified as 10am, we got there at 9:30 and they were already registering people. The proceedings were supposed to begin at 10:45 but they still had a lot of delegates to get signed in at that point.

Social Security and Medicare

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 12:25:48 AM PDT

No one has been talking very much about privatizing Social Security. I just heard a mention of John McCain starting it up again, but if that's true, he's the only one.

It seems to me that putting our safety net in the stock market is A Bad Idea[tm]. Look at the volatility. Look at Bear Stearns. I'm a little afraid the roller coaster is only just beginning... Is it just me, or is anyone else thinking this way?

Crisis for Detainee at Guantanamo

Sun Mar 16, 2008 at 12:16:15 PM PDT

My husband and I both look around the web to find material to read to each other. Most of it relates either to the 2008 presidential campaigns or to the Bush administration's incompetent and/or criminal behavior. I recently took the extra step of joining some sites so I can add my own comments. This is my first diary.

I cannot find adequate words to describe how I feel after my husband read to me an opinion piece from Salon.com that was posted on Friday. Get out some Kleenex if you read the article. In A sickening truth at Guantanamo, H. Candace Gorman describes the desperate situation of her client, Abdul Hamid Al-Ghizzawi, a detainee at Guantanamo.

Ms. Gorman writes that although the commission found that Mr. Al-Ghizzawi is not a terrorist, he continues to be detained. But that's not really the sickening part, as disgusting as that is. Here's the thing: Mr. Al-Ghizzawi is dying and is not being given medical treatment he needs to survive.
