The New York Times has just given a black eye to the word "Intelligent" with the publishing of a new Op/Ed piece about Intellegent Design. For those unfamiliar with the issue, Intelligent Design is a movement (some call it a theory) that has developed over the past decade that questions evolution. The main premise of Intelligent Design is that nature is too complex to have happened through naturalistic means, such as mutation and natural selection. Rather, because the world is complex and there is "design", there must have been a designer. Some have called Intelligent Design "Creationism Light". The purveyors of this theory have been unsuccessful in publishing in the scientific literature, therefore, have pushed there wears in the popular press, with flashy titles such as "Darwin's Black Box" and "Darwin on Trial", convinced school boards that their ideas are on par with evolutionary theory and now, today, have somehow been allowed to publish on the Op/Ed page of the New York Times.
