The head of the German intelligence agency, in an interview published here Tuesday, said Osama bin Laden had been able to elude capture after the American invasion of Afghanistan by paying bribes to the Afghan militias delegated the task of finding him.
"The principal mistake was made already in 2001, when one wanted bin Laden to be apprehended by the Afghan militias in Tora Bora," the intelligence official, August Hanning, said in an interview with the German business newspaper Handelsblatt.

Controversial Iraqi Television Program Airs Confessions of Alleged Terrorists
confessions by individuals accused of responsibility for the wave of violence in the country. The program is popular with many Iraqis, tired of the continuing instability two years after the war to overthrow Saddam Hussein.
A man, appearing disheveled and uncomfortable, sits on a wooden chair in a dim room of what appears to be a police station.
As an interrogator peppers him with questions, the man says he was part of a gang that kidnapped and murdered Iraqis during the past two years in order to create a split between Shi'ite and Sunni Iraqis. But he says his acts were not holy war. They were blasphemous.

Pies and Salad Dressing Better Than Threats or Bullets
Fri Apr 01, 2005 at 08:20:36 AM PDT

In two events this week, I think some perspective should be considered.
Bill Kristol, my good buddy, got some pie in the face and our old friend Pat Buchanan got smeared with some salad dressing. Whoopty doo.
Meanwhile Tom DeLay is implying revenge of a most nefarious kind towards Michael Schiavo, the doctors, and judges that allowed a woman to end her life.

Scientists Say Life Expectancy To Drop
Obesity could help keep Social Security solvent because people will die younger. "One of the consequences of our prediction is that Social Security does not appear to be in nearly as bad a shape as we think," said study author S. Jay Olshansky.

Who Got Bernie's Bling?

Whenever somebody is stealing billions and gets caught for it, I like to go back and see if anyone profited from their largesse. Who got paid? Show me the money, or something. Now our man Bernie, he liked to go both ways so there are some GOPers but there are a lot of prominent Democrats on here too.
Cycles 2004, 2002, 2000 $48K and
1998, 1996 $17,500, and 1994, 1992= $32,500
That is a lot of dough. That is just personal contributions too. He is no longer an "alleged criminal", even though he's appealing, he can now be considered the real thing. Did your politician take any dirty money?
Bin Laden fatwa as Spain remembers
Fri Mar 11, 2005 at 06:15:33 AM PDT
CNN
MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- Muslim clerics in Spain have issued what they called the world's first fatwa, or Islamic edict, against Osama bin Laden as the country marked the first anniversary of the Madrid train bombings that killed 191 people.
They accused him of abandoning his religion and urged others of their faith to denounce the al Qaeda leader.

While Ethics Charges Mount, DeLay's Heart Skips a Beat

Representative Tom DeLay, the House majority leader, was treated for a heart ailment on Thursday at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., his office said.
Mr. DeLay, Republican of Texas, was released after a series of tests. He intends to keep plans to go to Florida, Georgia and Texas this weekend.
50 Cent, The Game, Social Security, and Setting an Example
Thu Mar 10, 2005 at 10:20:35 AM PDT

The reason that this is great is that here are leaders in the African American community coming together to solve issues in a constructive manner.
More than a week after their private feud was made painfully public, the rapper 50 Cent and his former protégé the Game called a truce yesterday afternoon at a charity event in Harlem.
"We're here to show people that we can rise over the most difficult of circumstances and together we can put the negativity behind us," said 50 Cent, reading haltingly from a prepared statement. "Over all, this is an opportunity for people to see us make peace."
Dissing the Net Roots
Tue Mar 08, 2005 at 09:52:22 AM PDT
There seems to be a great deal of consternation right now at the DLC (
NEWDONKEY) about how to handle the net roots and the angst that is still out there fomenting against them post election. Well, I have an idea: Don't insult them. The inside baseball that occurred during the primary season when the DLC supposedly took on Dean's candidacy contended that Dean could be out of control and that we would surely never win on anger alone. Wouldn't it be smarter now to heed your own advice?
Anger and insults can only escalate to a total scorched earth policy within the Democratic Party(
that Dailykos has already declared) in which Kilgore is correct in his blog that we will not get back to a majority party.

FEC May Tighten Restrictions On Internet Political Activity
Mon Feb 14 2005 10:38:41 ET
The Federal Election Commission next month will begin looking at tightening restrictions on political activities on the Internet, ROLL CALL reports Monday.
The FEC is planning to examine the question of how Internet activities, when coordinated with candidates' campaigns, fit into the definition of 'public communications.
Specifically, the FEC is planning to examine the question of how Internet activities, when coordinated with candidates' campaigns, fit into the definition of "public communications." While coordinated communications are considered campaign contributions and therefore subject to strict contribution limits, current FEC regulations adopted in 2002 carve out an exemption for coordinated political communications that are transmitted over the Internet.

Reuters is reporting that N. Korea alledgedly purchased nuclear weapons either from Pakistan or a former Soviet state.
North Korea appears to have bought a complete nuclear weapon from either Pakistan or a former Soviet Union state, a South Korean newspaper said on Thursday quoting a source in Washington.
Seoul Shinmun quoted the source as saying the United States was checking the intelligence.

AFTER the Constitution Ball and the Commander in Chief Ball, after all the official black-tie parties wound down around midnight on Inauguration Day, members of a young Republican crowd scarcely old enough to remember the Reagan years were still looking for excitement. Naturally, they headed to a basement bar in Georgetown that has become an unofficial clubhouse for the Jenna and Barbara Bush generation.
Or as we out amongst the great unwashed might call it "the consequence free class"

Letters To Labour: THROW TONY OUT
Wed Jan 12, 2005 at 01:53:34 PM PDT
In the coming weeks and months, Tony Blair will be facing his third bid for the Premiership. While his reign on the Labour Party has been strained at times, he has managed to out manuever enemies within his party and sustain prolonged personal attacks. In the process, he has risen to the forefront as perhaps the most talented politician world wide, combining the deft political skills of Bill Clinton while emitting the strength of George W. Bush. Unfortuneately for the PM, it would be in the best interest of the British people if new leadership took over.
Why should this be an important mission for progressive Democrats?
Rumsfeld Robopen's Death Letters
Sun Dec 19, 2004 at 04:33:03 PM PDT
Rumsfeld said he was going to begin personally signing the letters home to soldiers that have been killed in the field. By that, he meant that he would have a machine do it. I guess it is part of the innovations that he is bringing to the armed forces.
CNN
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld faced renewed criticism Sunday from lawmakers, including one prominent Republican, after he said he has not personally signed letters sent to family members of troops killed in action.
Rumsfeld made the acknowledgment in a statement to military newspaper Stars and Stripes, saying that he would begin signing such letters.
Stars and Stripes had reported that Rumsfeld's letters carried a mechanical reproduction of his signature, which angered some military families.
A Rumsfeld Resignation: A Loss in the War on Terror
Fri Dec 17, 2004 at 02:22:29 PM PDT
While President Bush
is intimately involved in all the planning for his next Presidential Inauguration, there seems to be questions looming over the festivities: Will Donald Rumsfeld be forced to resign? If he does resign, is that perceived as a loss in the war on terror?
Today, it seems that the White House tried to put the matter to rest by finally speaking out on Rumsfeld's behalf:
"Secretary Rumsfeld is doing a great job leading our efforts at the Department of Defense to win the war on terrorism and to help bring about a free and peaceful Iraq, and the president is focused on working closely with him on those matters," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.
Interestingly Mitch McConnell whose wife, Elaine Choi was spared from the Cabinet purge came to Rumsfeld's defense:
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), in a statement: "While Secretary Rumsfeld has my full support, more importantly he has the President's."
