RAPE & KILL DAWN

These words are scrawled in Sharpie on the walls of the sidewalk under the bridge near Centennial and Coburg in Eugene, Oregon. The lettering is huge — you can't miss it. I came upon it walking home from the dry cleaner earlier today. I wasn't as disturbed as perhaps I should've been; after all, it's just graffiti. Probably just some Neanderthal's display. But after a moment I realized that, at the very least, the police should know if they don't already.

So I called the non-emergency police line and described the scene: “‘Rape and kill Dawn,’ among other things.” The response:

“Unless it's race-related, or a threat against a specific person who's willing to press charges, there's really nothing we can do.”

I mumbled something about how I just thought they should know, and she cut me off, ushering me briskly off the line.

Herds of Cats: No, We *Can't* All Just Get Along

Sat Jun 21, 2008 at 10:37:07 AM PDT

Yesterday a great many diaries had one of two forms:

  1. "I hate Obama now because he disappointed us."
  1. "I hate Daily Kos now because everyone hates Obama now because he disappointed us."

True to form, I got damn tired of both camps. To the former: We're all disappointed at Obama's tepid statement, but how exactly does that make McCain an acceptable alternative? But to the latter: What the hell party do you think this is?

WE'RE DEMOCRATS. Bickering is in our blood.

I have to vent. Question mark?

McCain is a stupid person? And, mark my words, he's going to lose? We must unite as a party to defeat him!? Come, Obama supporters and Clinton supporters and Edwards supporters and Kucinich supporters (yes, you, in the back!) - let us unite for victory?

Because together, we can change U.S. politics forever?

YES WE CAN?

We're the united ones. When are THEY coming around?

I mean, seriously. We're committed to backing the Democratic nominee, whoever it ends up being. (Especially since that's Obama.) But what about those other people, the ones who're all bitter and too worked up about Hillary to come together as a party? I'm glad we're not being divisive.

Today, In Screenshot Form

Remember how recently we were all so damn worried? About Rev. Wright, about the gas tax pander that just might work to get votes (if not to lower prices), about the polls, about that nagging feeling that maybe we wouldn't do so well in IN and NC ...

Nagging feeling begone!

Awesome, awesome shit :-D

Update [2008-5-6 23:55:27 by Jyrinx]: The banner now says "Pick McCain's VP." Looks like we're on to the general :-D

The Subjunctive Mood: A Plea

Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 08:49:29 PM PDT

The English language has a rich vocabulary but meager grammar. Where most languages' verbs offer subtle shades of meaning with every choice of suffix, English has only blunt instruments like "should" - our inflections barely account for person and number. So it is that evey last vestige of grammatical nuance is precious and must be cherished.

Which is why, dear friends, I bring this grave news. One of those few survivors is now clinging for its life, and at this very moment its unwitting executioners - some of them on this very blog! - threaten to let it fall away, lost forever.

That victim: The contrary-to-fact subjunctive.

(Once more unto the fold!)
