NV-Gov: Assault charges against Gibbons withdrawn
Sun Oct 15, 2006 at 07:22:37 AM PDT
Republican NV Gubernatorial candidate
Jim Gibbons was involved in a bizarre incident Friday night. According to today's (ver conservative and very uninvestigative)
Review Journal, a "very intoxicated" woman not his wife filed charges for assault against Gibbons on Friday night. "[B]oth had been drinking" at a Las Vegas restaurant near a hotel where Gibbons was staying, alone, and on the way out, she believed that he had assaulted her.
Gibbons is in a tight race with Dina Titus for Governor; the most recent polls put Gibbons less than 2% ahead of Titus. The two meet this week for two live debates.
NV-Gov, ind poll shows even race, as Titus builds momentum
Sun Sep 10, 2006 at 05:03:09 PM PDT
Today's
Las Vegas Sun reported an independent poll by Garin Hart Yang of the Nevada Governor's race that shows
democratic nominee Dina Titus even with republican Jim Gibbons:
Titus 46, Gibbons 45. Based on phone interviews with 600 LVs, MOE = 4.
This result would appear to confirm the Zogby/ WSJ poll that showed her leading 47-44. Both campaigns have publicly acknowledged that internal polling shows the race within MOE.
NV Primary

Today is the primary in Nevada. Races to watch below:
NV-Gov: Dem Titus takes lead in latest Rasmussen poll
Mon May 22, 2006 at 11:43:56 PM PDT
Democratic front-frunner
state Senator Dina Titus has taken the lead over Republican Congressman Jim Gibbons in the race for Governor of Nevada, according to the latest Rasmussen Report.
The Rasmussen survey was of 500 LVs and showed Titus with 44 to Gibbons' 40 percent, which is an 9 point gain on the last Rasmussen survey (which had Gibbons ahead by 5, 46-41). This is the first independent survey to show Titus ahead.
Indicative of the strong campaign Titus has been waging, she put Gibbons on the defensive today about his vote to grant tax subsidies to oil companies, while gas prices in NV average over $3 per gallon.
NV Gov: Titus continues to gain on Gibbbons
Thu Feb 02, 2006 at 06:50:35 PM PDT
Rasmussen has a new survey out that shows Democratic front-runner, state
Sen Dina Titus pulling ever closer to her likely Republican opponent, Rep Jim Gibbons.
Gibbons, who had intended to be so far ahead that he'd avoid any serious challenge, has a lead of only 46-41 over Titus, well within the MOE for a survey of 500 LVs. Titus gained ground on Gibbons in every survey taken in 05, and that trend now continues.
Titus posted impressive fund-raising numbers ($1.2m) in her end of year disclosure and is building a strong grassroots campaign. She's also been stumping hard all around the state, winning support in rural counties that Dems lost in 04 but need to win back to carry the state.
Sabato now lists this race as a "toss-up," out of the "lean Republican" column, and its shaping up to be one of the most important races in 06.
NV Gov: Titus holds lead in Dem primary, GE races tightens
Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 07:27:59 AM PDT
State Sen
Dina Titus continues to hold a sizeable lead of 40 - 26 in a
new poll for next year's Democratic primary in the race for Governor of NV.
This is the same margin (+14) as her lead in last month's poll. The poll, MOE +-4, also showed her within 9 points of Republican Reb Jim Gibbons, whose unfavorability continues to rise.
NV Young Republicans "Implode"
Wed Jul 13, 2005 at 08:31:45 PM PDT
Matching the story about the NJ College Republicans, this afternoon we learn that the Young Republicans have
imploded in the wake of last weekend's national convention here in Vegas.
NV-Gov: Titus leads Dem primary, both Dems gain for GE
Sat May 21, 2005 at 10:44:10 AM PDT
Both Democratic candidates for Gov in NV,
state Sen Dina Titus and Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, gained considerably against Republican Rep Jim Gibbons, according to a
recently published poll.
Compared with a poll released by Gibbons' own campaign one month ago, this new non-partisan (though methodologically conservative leaning) poll by Mason-Dixon for the Las Vegas Review Journal shows Gibbons under 50 % and barely outside the margin of error against both Titus and Perkins (both of whom have much lower name ID than Gibbons).
Even more interestingly this poll shows Titus leading Perkins by over 2-1 among registered Democrats (31-15).
Jim Gibbons/ GOP payola : still at it
Tue Mar 15, 2005 at 07:10:37 AM PDT
Today's
Las Vegas Review Journal reports that Rep. Jim Gibbons, who in the last few weeks has repeatedly embarrassed himself by trying to appeal to the hard-right-wingers, was also apparently borrowing another page from the republican playbook -- paying reporters.
He gave $8K in "consulting fees" to a Nevada-based freelance tv and radio reporter and former director of the Nevada Press Association, for "election analysis". She did work last fall primarily for a radio station that features nationally syndicated right-wing shout radio programming.
Which of course is precisely the sort of speech that Jim Gibbons has specialized in lately.
Young Republican leader shows GOP values
Wed Feb 16, 2005 at 10:42:18 AM PDT
The Young Republicans are slated to hold their national convention in Las Vegas in June. That alone should generate some chuckles about GOP values.
But the big story is that the operative who heads the corporation established to run the joint is being investigated for fraud and theft. Seems he's collected about $25K in reg fees that he's spent on personal expenses, repaying loans, and bar tabs.
He's clearly got the wrong memo about "personal accounts".

Wolves: too much metaphor
Fri Oct 22, 2004 at 05:35:06 PM PDT
Seems to me, after a couple of viewings, that the imagery is too rich and drowns out the message. I'll agree that the final scene, when the Wolves rise and run, raised the hairs on the back of my neck, but I don't remember -- and I expect most voters won't -- the reasons that Kerry is "weak" and Bush is "strong."
I do like the "Eagles" response though. Pokes fun at Bush but makes a lasting, easily remembered impression. IN fact, I like this ad a lot, because one of my concerns about KErry's advertising was that because of the emphasis on rapid response, they've had really weak visuals.
I have been saying to myself for a while that ,"self, what Kerry needs is a visual metaphor on which to close out the campaign." I had presumed it would be a boat...
but a soaring eagle vs. an ostrich is just great. On so many levels. (Not least is that it reminds me of the unbearably funny scene in 9/11 of Ashcroft singing about soaring eagles.
Find the Media Buyers
Tue Oct 12, 2004 at 09:47:11 AM PDT
I just called a local liquor store who advertises on Sinclair; its a great store with excellent deals on imported (yes, French) wines ... but what is really interesting is that the manager, who is a Kerry donor, told me his advertising is handled by a company called On-Target Media.
He told me he uses them only because they send out coupons for very little money; he didn't even know that his ads run on Sinclair.
I have yet to find a local # for them, but it makes clear that we can make some progress here if we find out which media companies are doing the buying and then let them know their customers will be hurt due to their affiliation with Sinclair.
Sinclair wants your opinion

thousands of new voter registrations thrown out in Clark County, NV
Sat Oct 02, 2004 at 09:19:44 PM PDT
With over
100,000 new voter registrations to process, the Clark County registrar is overwhelmed.
Today, on the final day for mail in registration (in person registration continues for 10 more days), several thousand new registrations were disqualified by the County registrar.
(The County registrar is a Democrat, so its not likely to be a Republican "dirty trick.")

Judge Strikes Down Campaign Finance Rules
What does this mean? It appears there are, for the moment, no campaign finance rules?
And where were these people back in August when SBVT was running "non-coordinated" ads?
weekend canvass update
Mon Sep 20, 2004 at 09:24:37 AM PDT
Quick report on a swing-state weekend canvass in Las Vegas, NV. We had 10 volunteers (including one who had come from England to spend her vacation volunteering for Kerry!) and hit over 300 homes, identifying about 150 supporters from among "marginal democratic" voters. We also registered at least 6 new voters.
Lots of senior citizens in these precincts and we took names and addresses for vote-by-mail (in effect, no-fault absentee ballot).
Biggest drawbacks were that the Party gave us NO Spanish-language material (in Southern Nevada?!!) -- fortunately we were able to make our own flyers -- and a very aleatory list in low-income appartment blocks.
Are GOP robocalls illegal?
Mon Aug 30, 2004 at 09:22:25 AM PDT
I just got a robocall from no less than George W Bush ...paid for Bush-Cheney04, Inc. I am on the FCC no-call list, and I have "no prior relationship" with BC04 or the Republicans.
I recall the GOP in other states getting in trouble for violating the law prohibiting unsolicited email; does the same thing apply to these robocalls?
IF not, is it worth calling BC04 and telling them I do not ever want to hear from them again, in hopes it takes them some effort to find and delete me from their list?
Or should I just follow my natural impulse and drop my phone in a bucket of disinfectant?
