Anti-Obama rant from the left + my reply

Wed Aug 06, 2008 at 09:26:27 AM PDT

What is it with the left? Are we hell-bent on destruction?

Granted, I voted for Nader in 2000 (but I campaigned for Gore!) However I feel like we lefties have learned how awful having the worse/t guy in office can be. Are we spending too much time appealing to the obnoxious swing-voter who is not nearly as charming as Kevin Costner's redneck might be, and not enough time with our librul pals who might succumb to the arguments below?

I have truncated below, then merely cut & pasted my reply to the newsletter pasted within an email I received yesterday from a dear, old friend. She knows I have canvassed/phone-banked for & donated to Obama & wanted me to be sure it "is really going to serve my higher purpose or my excitement for life" and so on.

My reason for posting this is twofold-

* To hear your reactions to the many interesting points Blum makes.

* To see what you, my favorite new peer group, think of my reply.

For those who don't know William Blum (I didn't), he was made (in)famous by a book pimping by none other than Osama bin Laden in his Jan 06 audio tape.

Gutterball

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 12:44:39 PM PDT

No, this is not a diary about Obama's bowling.

We have seen the smear machine rolled out en masse this week. I feel it is important to commemorate the throwing down of the gauntlet and address it briefly.

A chronology of the last few days of smears below, and how I suggest addressing, a.k.a. "counter-attacking", each one.

This video record should come with a "MA" or "PG-13" rating as some of McLame's ads are so pathetic they may induce vomiting. You've been warned.

NY Times' Herbert: Running While Black

Sat Aug 02, 2008 at 11:22:55 AM PDT

Honestly, I didn't plan this. But once again, a powerful  NY Times op-ed by Bob Herbert, Running While Black, takes on the hot button issue of the week with more eloquence than I could have.

Why have so few had the kahunas to call out the fact that the only connection between Brittney, Paris Hilton & Obama is the blatant racism seen in the movie, "Reefer Madness"? Many have credited its thesis, that smoking weed makes white women want to have sex with black jazz musicians, for causing a medicinal herb used by doctors to be made illegal without consulting the AMA.

Now we see these tactics from the 1930s not-so-subtly used by a man born right between the release of the film and the "Marijuana Tax Act".

The two highly sexualized women (both notorious for displaying themselves to the paparazzi while not wearing underwear) are shown briefly and incongruously at the beginning of a commercial critical of Mr.Obama.

NY Times' Herbert: Media bias indeed; favoring McCain(Updated)

Sat Jul 26, 2008 at 01:22:06 PM PDT

Maybe it will be dismissed as yet another "in the tank" piece by the "librul media." Maybe it will be ignored by "hard-working Americans" because it was written by a black guy. But today's NY Times column, "Getting to Know You", by Bob Herbert feels like a long overdue breath of fresh air from the MSM to me.

But what we’ve learned over the years is that Mr. McCain is one of those guys who never has to pay much of a price for his missteps and foul-ups and bad behavior. Can you imagine the firestorm of outrage and criticism that would have descended on Senator Obama if he had made the kind of factual mistakes that John McCain has repeatedly made in this campaign?

92-year old woman endorses Obama w/ video

Mon Jul 21, 2008 at 09:23:29 AM PDT

This 90-second video highlights the value of the right to vote during the life of my grandma, who had no such right at birth. And this year, she will be voting for Barack Obama.

5-Ring Circus: Skip it this year

Sun Jul 20, 2008 at 12:06:19 PM PDT

Golly that 8-8-08 date is creeping up quick. And I just realized, I think I might just forgo the whole thing. Or had you forgotten about China?

The world's most populous country?
The world's largest polluter? (Dubya got his facts wrong again; fuzzy math)
Ring a bell yet?

The marketing buzz detailed in today's NY Times shows that the world yearns for Chinese cash.

For most international brands here, China is the growth market for the next 10 years...Olympic-related advertising in China could reach $4 billion to $6 billion this year

Why we should re-evaluate embracing China after the jump.

My 1st Amendment-free 4th in CA-04 (updated)

Fri Jul 04, 2008 at 08:44:10 PM PDT

Directed by MyBo.com to a local voter registration event here in the mountains of Lake Tahoe where I've been charged with watching the family home for the holiday weekend, I showed up to volunteer at the Truckee 4th of July parade.

That's when things got interesting.

Obama ad airs during O'Reily Factor

Wed Jul 02, 2008 at 08:09:49 PM PDT

In case you were wondering if indeed Obama was targeting voters on the right, we have confirmation.

And don't think I watch Fixed News. I was surfing between Rachel & the ballgame while both were at commercial and saw the Obama TV spot. The one about his family growing up, etc. I didn't even realize which channel it was until the ad ended. Sure, Bill-o had the night off, but team Obama booked the spot to air on Fox at that time.

My take below the fold.

Dear John,

Fri Jun 20, 2008 at 02:08:48 PM PDT

This is not an easy letter to write. You may not believe it's true. This, in some circles, is what's called "tough love".

Our relationship has run its course.

You have given plenty over the years. As your opponent, Barack Obama, says almost every time he mentions you, your service in the armed forces during the Vietnam War should be honored and respected.

The problem we have, John, is that things have gone downhill ever since then.

"resounding" math

Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 12:01:01 AM PDT

Just thought I'd crunch some numbers before bedtime.

Depending on the remaining 144 supers, Obama can end up with roughly 55% of the total delegates. Am I missing something?

That is a ten point win.

On merely the pledged delegates, he has a six point win.

When facing a candidate with huge name recognition, with a former president behind her, huge donors, etc, this really is nothing even remotely resembling a "close" or "tight" race. This is a thrashing.

Nepal: World's youngest democracy launched today

Wed May 28, 2008 at 03:00:04 PM PDT

Congratulations to Nepal for voting to become a republic and abolish the monarchy which had in recent years sent this beautiful Himalayan country into chaos!

Today's Constituent Assembly vote of 560-4 signals lasting change and a hope for greater peace in one of the world's poorest countries.

Red/Blue colorblind

Tue May 27, 2008 at 02:02:45 PM PDT

As a white American, occasionally hard-working, I am ready to move past the "hard-working Americans, white Americans" theme to which we have been subjected over the past few months. As HRC grew more desperate, this talking point became a studdering point for Hill/Billy that they hoped would resonate with Superdelegates.

They tried this path because it was politically astute to do so.

Sadly once these 2 dying fish stop flopping around, this topic will hardly fade from view. You can already see the Karl Roves on Team John McCain planning their slogans-

McCain 2008- "I ain't black"
McCain 2008- African-Americans will punish you if they win
McCain 2008- White men in charge, 230+ years and counting

Why Obama can't select female VP anymore

Wed May 21, 2008 at 02:30:30 AM PDT

It's really sad that it has come to this.

But it hit me while lying in bed trying to sleep reviewing the numbers from Kentucky. Barack Obama can no longer risk having a woman on the ticket with him.

Of course, this is entirely due to the methods of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Are we there yet?

Open Letter to MSNBC

Thu May 15, 2008 at 11:22:15 AM PDT

Dear Sirs-

I have only recently begun watching your channel. Seldom do I watch TV, especially cable.

However, that fact that you feature someone as intelligent and eloquent as Keith Olbermann has changed that.

It is so refreshing to have someone on TV who doesn't talk down to me. Thank you so much for giving this journalist a forum of his own and for having him as the anchor on primary nights.

His "Special Comment" on May 14 about Bush & golf was important television, a near oxymoron in today's world. I watched with bated breath. I have re-watched this segment on your website in the hours since it first aired. I will be buying Oral-B dental care products today in support of their sponsorship of the "Special Comment" on the website.

Finally, it may sound trite, but the only TV show I historically watched "religiously" was "The Simpsons". Since I have begun tuning into "Countdown", which sadly airs at the same time locally here in Sacramento, I don't watch even 1 minute of my former favorite show. Keith Olbermann's show is the only program on TV I cannot bear to miss.

Open letter to Gore, Pelosi, Edwards, et al.

Tue May 06, 2008 at 05:41:37 PM PDT

Dear Superdelegate-

The latest "mini super Tuesday" results are clear. Barack Obama is this country's Democratic voters' choice to be our nominee to face John McCain in November.

The remaining contests do matter. But they simply could not alter this reality. The candidate who trails would need unprecedented wins in all of those contests to render her candiacy viable again. It will not happen.

Hillary Rodham Clinton began this race many moons ago with a huge lead in the polls. Obama has been funded by hundreds of thousands of small donors; she has been funded largely by numerous large donors. Her support has withered away steadily. She has lost.
