My Camp Wellstone Diary
Tue Mar 28, 2006 at 09:35:32 PM PDT
This weekend I attended
Camp Wellstone in Caldwell, Idaho. It was an extraordinary experience.
Like many people, I feel powerless in the face of the huge political issues around us. How do we stop war, rampant corruption, environmental degradation. Blah, blah, blah. The list of outrages is neverending and scrolls by on Daily Kos 24 hours a day. I found myself thinking not "what can I do" but "where do I run?"
I had been aware of Camp Wellstone for a while and thought it would be great to participate. I figured a quality program like this woudl be semi-expensive, so I waited until I had some savings to spend. Unfortunately, I never looked closely enough at signing up. If I had, I would have learned that the camp is only $75 for three days of training, including three meals. Yes. $75. (This is where you stop reading this diary and go sign up. Then come back and finish reading...)
My Ideal Candidate

Since there do not seem to be any ideal political candidates out there, I thought I would write down the qualities I want in a candidate. Maybe someone knows this person:
Counting My Chickens: The 2008 Election (with poll!)
Fri Oct 15, 2004 at 09:38:30 AM PDT
If After Kerry wins, Bush will still be eligible to run for a second term in 2008. That is, if he's not convicted of war crimes or publicly humiliated as the facts about his corrupt administration come to light. Even so, we've seen that he has 40 million people willing to follow him blindly regardless of reality.
In the 2008 election, Kerry gets to be the incumbent defending his record, and Bush would be the challenger. Kerry will have to deal with the fallout of 4 years of disastrous Bush policies - things in America will not be pretty because we're cleaning up his mess. How do we fend off the Republicans in 2008 so America can right itself and get back on a path toward respect and success?
Log Cabin Republicans Sue To Overturn "Don't Ask Don't Tell"
Tue Oct 12, 2004 at 09:06:11 PM PDT
San Francisco Chronicle reported today that the Log Cabin Republicans are suing in federal court to
overturn Don't Ask Don't Tell.
The Republicans turned their back on their gay members at the convention with an overtly homophobic platform. This is what they get. A large advocacy group that would have stayed silent and supported their fearless leader. Instead, they realize they have to look out for themselves because the larger party won't. So much for blind loyalty. Good for them.
Divisiveness Question: An Edwards Opportunity Missed
Tue Oct 05, 2004 at 07:48:16 PM PDT
I only heard the last part of the debate as I drove home from class tonight, but it seemed there was a golden opportunity missed on the question of being a uniter vs. a divided nation.
Cheney's answer focused solely on Congress. It was as though the voters, the people of the US didn't exist. There was no acknowledgement of the deep anger across the country. No acknowledgement of the huge leadership gap and aggressive acts of divisiveness from the Republicans since 2000. All that mattered was which bills Congress worked together on. Wonk insider issues.
It was a lobbed softball ready for Edwards to hit out of the park, and it was the last question of the debate. Edwards had a chance to contrast Bush/Cheney's focus on politics and insider arguments versus a vision of creating a united, thriving nation. Instead, he talked about the K/E health care plan.
It was the last question. I wish the debate could have ended with a withering Edwards attack...
East Bay Debate-Watching Party?
Wed Sep 29, 2004 at 02:02:25 PM PDT
Who's in the East Bay (Oakland) area and wants to get together to watch the debate? I for one will need moral support from fellow DailyKos experts to get through it.
DailyKos Debate Response Team
Wed Sep 29, 2004 at 10:07:11 AM PDT
Without a doubt, Bush will try to charm and scare his way through the debates. He'll use his fake down-homeness, and he'll use threats of further terrorism to paralyze American voters into another four disastrous years with him in charge.
We should band together at DailyKos to catalog and debunk Bush's lies as the debate happens. Counter his rhetoric, generalities and falsehoods with facts and quotes, and have them available on the site before the debate even ends.
Who's up for taking this on?

A little recreational poll as we approach the RNC.
Time Mag Poll: Bush's Credibility
Sun Feb 08, 2004 at 07:17:45 PM PDT
Time magazine's cover this week is "Does Bush Have A Credibility Gap." A feature called "
An Absence in Alabama," addresses the AWOL issue.
Time/CNN's online poll accompanying the article is "Does Bush Have A Credibility Problem?" With 1898 votes cast, 85.3% say yes. 55% expressed reservations about Bush's trustworthiness in a telephone poll on February 5-6.
Bush's credibility, and not just on being AWOL, needs to be the prime issue of this election because he loses on the facts of every credibility issue. Vote now to reinforce how suspect Bush's credibility is.
Shift The Discussion
Wed Jan 21, 2004 at 11:15:30 PM PDT
It's hard for me to read Daily Kos anymore. People are wallowing in fear. "How will Dean's hangnail affect his electability?", "The Republicans are saying Clark didn't de-fuzz his sweater today!" Too often, the discussions are framed in terms of the negatives that are happening to us.
That's why the Republicans win. They frame the issue as far away from them as possible, unless they pre-emptively claim a victory for themselves. They make a lame proposal, attack the other side and watch us crumble.
Why help them?
Sharing The Exit Row With Sen. Thomas
Sun Dec 21, 2003 at 03:34:18 PM PDT
Yesterday, unbeknownst to me until the very end of my flight from Denver to DC, I sat next to
Sen. Craig Thomas (R-WY). I sensed he was a Republican from the way he glared at my
Jim Carville book and from the title of the magazine article he was reading - "Will the GOP run the table in Nevada?" - but neither of us struck up a conversation during the three hour flight. What questions should I have asked the Senator, had I known who he was?
Can We Please Muzzle Lieberman?
Tue Dec 09, 2003 at 01:49:37 PM PDT
"Clinton made our party once again fiscally responsible, pro-growth, strong on values for middle class tax cuts. Howard Dean is against all of those," Lieberman said."
I know Kos doesn't like it when Lieberman's called a Republican, but quotes like these make me wonder whose side he's on. Is he that desperate to win the nomination that he will undermine another candidate with misinformation at a moment when the entire party could ride the coattails of positive publicity from the Gore announcement? Has he really convinced himself he has a chance?
If I were looking for a candidate, such un-Presidential, sour grapes behavior would immediately disqualify Lieberman in my book.
Undermining Elections
Mon Nov 17, 2003 at 03:20:45 PM PDT
Florida. Texas. Colorada. California. The Republicans have used four separate approaches to undermine democracy in the last three years. (Five if you believe in the conspiracy theory that Wellstone's plane was sabotaged). Something tells me they've got a bag of other election-busting strategies they haven't revealed yet.
Imagine that a Democrat leads Bush in the Presidential election next fall. Imagine that Democratic candidates look to pick up significant gains in the House or Senate. What strategies will the Republicans use to nullify the vote? We better think about it now so we can approach it proactively rather than reactively.
Jessica Lynch For Vice President
Thu Oct 30, 2003 at 12:22:30 PM PDT
What if a sentimental war "hero" like Jessica Lynch was named to the Democratic ticket. Assuming of course that Clark wouldn't take the spot. Those that believe that Lynch's rescue was heroic - a number about to balloon as her TV movie airs soon - would be put in a hard place. Do they vote for someone with no military experience who started a controversial war, or do they vote for a victim of that war. The support the troops zombies might be made to believe that they had to vote for Lynch or else they weren't supporting the troops.
Needed: One Sacrificial Lamb
Thu Oct 23, 2003 at 07:10:42 PM PDT
Things are looking up, but it will take an extraordinary effort for dubya to be defeated next year. I truly believe that at least one of the leading Democratic candidates must be a sacrificial lamb. One candidate needs to take one for the team. Be the bad cop. Challenge dubya on his record, on his incompetence, on his lies, on the hypocrisy. Do it uncompromisingly, making the sacrificial lamb unelectable but valuable in bringing dubya's reputation down, in shifting the conversation about dubya away from heroism and toward reality.
This candidate must shift momentum away from dubya, knowing America's support will not go to him. It will go to another Democratic candidate. The sacrificial lamb needs to create room for the real candidate to articulate a vision for America, to create hope, to differentiate himself from politics as usual. The sacrificial lamb needs to get mired in the negativity so the real candidate can stay on message and win over America.
Who should be the sacrificial lamb? Would any leading Democratic personality be willing to take one for the team?
