My 2008 criteria - Who does the most for other Dems?

Tue Mar 28, 2006 at 08:28:04 AM PDT

I hate to add to the 2008 focus of so many diaries, but this isn't as much about that as it is 2006.

One of the jobs of a President, beyond keeping us safe/kick-starting the economy/providing moral leadership/repairing our image abroad/appointing qualified judges/etc is to help other good, like-minded people win their races for elected office.

My criteria is this: Who does the most to help other Democrats in 2005, 2006 & 2007?

WashPost: Domenech affair "f***in' disaster"

Mon Mar 27, 2006 at 03:04:53 PM PDT

I know it's old news, but I hadn't seen it and couldn't find anything about this on the site:

From the Star Tribune, we find out that Deborah "I only comment on the WashPost website when attacking non-conservatives" Howell has admitted that the Domenech affair wasn't exactly a good thing for the WashPost brand.

Menendez to vote NO on Alito, Filibuster?

Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 12:03:49 PM PDT

New Jersey's newest Senator, Robert Menendez, has announced that he will vote NO on the Samuel Alito nomination, according to PoliticsNJ.

Menendez's position on the filibuster is unknown (at least to me) at this time.

DC area carpool to OH-2

Fri Jul 29, 2005 at 11:09:37 AM PDT

Apologies if I'm repeating or missing an existing forum for this.

While I can't make it down to OH-2 for the special, I do have a friend who is going. He plans on leaving relatively early tomorrow morning from Northern Virginia.

Since he is already going and has a car full of seats to offer, I wonder if there is anyone else who wants to go to Ohio but lacks the transportation or wants to split the $100 in gass it will take to get there and back.

He's going to be coming back Wednesday.

I just figure it might be useful to have one place where people from an area can see who else is going, when they are coming back and try to coordinate.

More evidence "Compromise" on SS is a ploy

Mon Feb 28, 2005 at 01:31:49 PM PDT

All this talk about raising tax ceilings and closing tax loopholes and even allowing some tax-cuts to expire as a way of tricking Dems to support any kind of SS privatization is clearly a ploy. There is no way this president and this republican congress are going to raise taxes in any way.

Now, we've got another theory as to possibly the real plan and motivations behind this talk and it's worse than I thought it could be...

GREAT NEWS IN VIRGINIA'S GOV RACE

Fri Feb 25, 2005 at 10:59:05 AM PDT

Today, Republican state senator Russ Potts (Winchester) announced that he will, as speculated here and elsewhere, run for Governor of Virginia as a "Republican Independent."

Although Friday is the worst day of the news cycle to release good information, Pott's official announcement is great news. More at the Washington Post.

Help Senator Bingaman Against Attacks To His Opposition to Gonzales

Wed Feb 16, 2005 at 11:17:51 AM PDT

Update [2005-2-16 14:17:51 by Armando]: From the diaries by Armando. Nothing infuriates me more than the racist tactic being employed by the Republicans to label opposition to Gonzales as anti-Latino. The tactic itself is racist. It assumes that Latinos will support any other Latino, even if he endorses torture. This condescending racist attitude would paint Latinos as basically immoral and uncaring as to the issue of torture. The reverse is true. Latinos understand what the torture issue is and what it means.

Senator Bingaman deserves our full support against this Republican smear. So do Latinos.

New Mexico Democratic Senator Jeff Bingaman voted against the Alberto Gonzales (R-Torture) nomination despite a sizable hispanic population in his home state, a looming campaign in '06 and the general competitiveness of New Mexico.

Now he is being targetted for having a conscience.

It would seem to me that those of us who can help should do so, to send a signal to the Dems in Congress that there is a reward to having a spine. People who live in New Mexico or very nearby could volunteer and make sure to mention your support for his opposition to Gonzeles. And those of us who don't live anywhere nearby should think about sending a little money over his way.

Maybe an Act Blue page for Senate Dems who are up this year in competitive elections and who voted against Gonzeles? (if it hasn't already been done).

Update [2005-2-16 16:12:6 by Armando]: There is no endorsement or call to support Sen. Bingaman in any specific manner or fashion. I do not have such authority, and I speak only for me.

*** BUSH'S ORIGINAL DRAFT ***

Wed Feb 02, 2005 at 07:34:36 PM PDT

found this out on a park bench tonight, thought you all might be interested to see it.

Introduction
Mr. Speaker, Co-President Cheney, minions in Congress, fellow citizens:

As a new Congress gathers, all of us in the elected branches of government share a great privilege: we have been placed in office by the votes of the people as tabulated by the good people of Diebold and AutherAnderson.

Punish DeLay's Corporate Conspirators

Wed Sep 22, 2004 at 07:02:14 AM PDT

Today's Washington Post article on the indictments of the SugarlandPest's PAC names the companies who provided the money to finace the Texas GOP House candidates.

I'm not sure anyone shops at Sears anymore, but I'm highly disappointed to see Bacardi and Cracker Barrel.

Just like I don't drink Coors, now I'm not drinking Bacardi or eating at Cracker Barrel.

"The businesses indicted were:
Sears, Roebuck and Co. of Illinois;
Bacardi USA Inc. of Miami, a subsidiary of the Bermuda-based liquor producer;
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, a subsidiary of CBRL Group Inc. in Lebanon, Tenn;
Westar Energy Inc., an electric utility company in Topeka, Kan.;
Diversified Collection Services Inc., a debt collection company in San Leandro, Calif.;
Williams Companies Inc., a natural gas company in Tulsa;
the Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care Corp., an umbrella organization of some of the nation's largest nursing home operators; and Questerra Corp. of Charlottesville, a subsidiary of MeadWestvaco Corp.

They allegedly made illegal corporate political contributions ranging from $20,000 to $100,000."

Let's make these companies, and others in the future, think twice about the economic repercussions of being so cozy with Delay and the other vile Repugs.
