My Appeal to John Edwards.

Mon Jan 21, 2008 at 09:13:14 AM PDT

If this diary gets picked up, I expect to take a lot of heat for my comments.  But I just have to share my urgent appeal to John Edwards: please drop out of the race and campaign for Obama.

Now, before you jump down my throat, let me make something perfectly clear: John Edwards is my preferred candidate.  John's position on the issues most strongly mirror my own.  I was committed to his victory, so much so that I agreed to serve as a voluntary advisor to the campaign, and I believed that he had a chance to pull off a win.  But that opportunity has passed.  John's strategy to win in Iowa and use the bounce in media coverage and contributions into New Hampshire and beyond failed. So the question at hand is this: what now?

My, what a beautiful synthetic tree you have!

Thu May 10, 2007 at 01:44:36 PM PDT

In case you haven't noticed, people are getting concerned about global warming. I know, I know. Glenn Beck thinks it's all just a hoax and he's on CNN for darn sakes, so why are we still talking about this?  Well, because Grinchy Gingrich is now worried. So what's an honest-to-god patriotic American to think?

In all seriousness, this is the big one folks. The real deal. And everybody is scratching their heads trying to figure out how to get out of this mess. One line of exploration is capturing carbon dioxide out of the air or before its emitted and then storing it deep underground or in the oceans. There are all kinds of ideas being kicked around for how to do this, including one I had never heard before: synthetic trees.

Never heard of it either? Well, join me below the fold.

Belated Update: What Al Gore Did to Me.

Sun Jan 28, 2007 at 02:23:26 PM PDT

A few months ago, I shared with the dKos community the amazing opportunity my wife and I received as a result of the film An Inconvenient Truth. The opportunity? Funding for a year so that the two of us could quite our jobs and work towards mitigating the climate crisis. We were given the freedom to be creative and think big. (Hopefully, we lived up to the opportunity.)

At the time I asked for suggestions, and was overwhelmed with both a flood of positive well-wishes and some fantastic ideas. I can't stress enough how much the responses did to launch us in the right direction. I promised to post updates as our research progressed and ideas coalesced. It's been a while but here's the skinny. I hope you'll join me below the fold.

Energizing Energize America.

Sat Nov 11, 2006 at 10:49:21 AM PDT

Yesterday, I posted a diary with some thoughts and questions about Energize America, the dKos plan to address our dependence on fossil fuels and the crisis of global warming. (For those of you who missed it, my wife and I were given an amazing opportunity to work on global climate change as a result of An Inconvenient Truth, and one of the suggestions we received was to work on Energize America.)

The diary is long and detailed and probably not of much interest for those who weren't involved in the creation of the plan.  However, one question emerged that I think bears the attention of anyone who cares about our dependence on fossil fuels or the fate of our planet:

How can the dailyKos community best utilize its expertise and people power to bring to life the great ideas captured in Energize America?  We proved that we could use them to elect politicians who truly represent the values of the American people... can we use them to shape a healthy energy and environmental future?

Energize America: Some Thoughts & Questions

Fri Nov 10, 2006 at 07:40:28 AM PDT

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a diary about what Al Gore did to me (short version: his film An Inconvenient Truth brought my wife and I an amazing opportunity to work on addressing global climate change), to which I received hundreds of terrific suggestions for areas to focus our efforts.  I'll be following up in the near future with some of the leading contenders, hoping that the dKos community can help us flesh them out (to keep tabs on our developments, search for the Climate Changers tag, that being the makeshift name for our to-be-determined project).  But that's to come...

This diary is a follow up to one specific suggestion I received from numerous people---to check out Energize America, a 20-point plan developed--through much discussion on dailyKos---U.S. energy security by 2020.

You Carried Us.

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 10:52:49 AM PDT

This is just a very short diary to say THANK YOU to all of you kossacks who worked your asses off to win back our country.  This was one battle in a protracted war (normally, I hate violent analogies but what can I say... I really would like to kick in the teeth of some of the genetically and morally challenged asshats who have shoved this country's head up its own ass the last 6+ years), but it was a big one.

Follow up to "Look What Al Gore Did to Me!"

Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 08:59:58 AM PDT

On Sunday, I posted a diary entitled "Holy crap, look at what Al Gore did to me!!!" about the amazing opportunity that my wife and I were given to work on addressing global climate change because of the film An Incovenient Truth.  We were both completely overwhelmed by the great mojo and ideas we received in response to our simple question: "What should we do?"  I just wanted to take a quick second to follow up and let those of you who want to help us succeed know where we're headed.

Holy crap, look at what Al Gore did to me!!!

Sun Oct 29, 2006 at 08:19:52 AM PDT

Back in July, wclathe posted a diary about how An Inconvenient Truth affected his family. I remember being really moved when reading hundreds of comments expressing all the ways---big and small---that the film motivated kossacks to live a little lighter on this planet. But I hadn't seen the documentary yet and so went on with my daily life.  Little did I know at the time that Al Gore would turn my entire life upside down. And now I need your help.

So what did Al Gore do to me? To find out what and how you can help, please follow me beneath the fold...

Testing Ebola & Mad Cow Disease in Pombo's District.

Sun Oct 22, 2006 at 07:59:35 AM PDT

Sorry if this has already been diaried, but I'm literally dashing out the door to attend the Bioneers Conference, where I first heard word of this news: The Department of Homeland Security plans to build a 500,000 square foot biolab where they intend to test some of the world's most dangerous diseases on innocent animals.

A high-security biological defense laboratory that might be built near Tracy to store and study incurable diseases such as the Ebola virus and mad cow disease would be no different than a biological weapons research center, according to a molecular biologist from the University of California, San Francisco.

"The only difference between defense research and offense research is your intent," said Dr. Judith Flanagan, who said the Level 4 laboratory would replicate the types of experiments terrorists and rogue states might conduct.

I hope we're just a footnote.

Thu Jul 13, 2006 at 08:42:11 AM PDT

Ok, so dkos and the lefty blogosphere are getting a lot of attention these days. The Democratic politicos are knocking on the door, the Lieberman campaign is throwing a lot of eyes our way, and now apologists on the left and the rabid whackos on the right are going on the attack. Great. Make you feel good? Make you feel like we're finally having an impact?

Well, here's my take (and I'd be curious to hear yours): If we're all ultimately forgotten or, at most, a historical footnote, then we've won.

time to found a third party?

Wed Mar 15, 2006 at 07:46:00 AM PDT

It's been a long time since I've posted a diary, but I've been here everyday, reading and fuming. Reading because I'm addicted to this community, however much the silent member I may be. Fuming because we (the collective American and global "we") have suffered one travesty, injustice, farce, tragedy after another. Sometimes I try to step back and attempt a historical perspective and all I'm left with is this: these are ugly, ugly times. And who am I most angry at: our Democratic leaders? Ask yourself the same question and I'm guessing most of you feel the same.

So, if you're with me, the questions we're left with are these: What the hell are we going to do about it? and When is it time to abandon this leaderless, rudderless party and start anew?

Fitz NOT exploring Italian connection

Fri Nov 04, 2005 at 08:35:09 AM PDT

(First, quick apologies if this has already been diaried... Didn't see it.)

In the fast and furious days leading up to the Libby indictments, when many of us were frantically hoping for signs that this would be a very merry Fitzmas, indeed, a story came out in UPI claiming that Fitzgerald had widened his investigation to look into the Niger forgeries.

Apparently, that aint true.  More below the fold.

What did Luskin really say to Fitz (w/poll)?

Tue Nov 01, 2005 at 07:45:26 AM PDT

As we all heard last week and WaPo reminded me this morning, a conversation with Luskin may have led Fitzgerald to reconsider his decision to indict Rove.

Fitzgerald appeared prepared to indict Rove heading into last week for making false statements, according to three people close to the probe. But that changed during a private meeting last Tuesday between Fitzgerald and Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin. It's not clear precisely what happened in that meeting, but two sources briefed on it said Luskin discussed new information that gave Fitzgerald "pause."

So, here's my question: What did Luskin say to convince Fitzgerald to lift the hammer?  Take the poll.

In Some Ways, the Greatest Crime of All.

Sat Oct 22, 2005 at 08:11:34 AM PDT

I'm getting way ahead of myself here, which is a bit ironic since I've been cautioning myself and others over the last week to not expect too much from the current confluence of scandals, but bear with me...

Let's all take a collective hit from the dream pipe and imagine the political climate in 2006 and 2007 after:

  • Fitzgerald indictments lead to the wide-scale resignation of many senior-level White House officials.  Karl Rove, Scooter Libby and others attempt to take the fall for Bush and Cheney but the smell of blood is in the air.
  • The once-iron wall guarded by Rove and other Republican operatives has crumbled and those who had once been scared into submission--including high-ranking military officers and Congressional members--begin to air their grievances, disagreements and attempt to distance themselves from the administration.  The Republican tent collapses (a tent that, after all, was built on the quest for power not on shared values), leaving the party's leaders exposed and blinking in the sun like cockroaches on a kitchen floor.

keep going, it gets good...

Local Dem Party Playing Hardball

Wed Sep 21, 2005 at 08:11:29 AM PDT

The Sonoma County Democratic Party is demanding that all members of the party holding local government offices endorse fellow Democrats or face expulsion. Link.

In a resolution adopted by the Sonoma County Democratic Central Committee, the party warns elected officeholders who are registered Democrats that they will be stricken from the central committee's sponsorship list if they endorse a non-Democrat or appoint a non-Democrat to any committee, agency or group if a "qualified Democrat" also is vying for the post.

I wonder how they determine who is "qualified" or not...

In addition, the committee is asking members to inform on party officials if they don't comply.  The penalty would last for one election cycle, 'after which "the offending Democratic officeholder's record shall be cleared of the misconduct charges."'

Make Tuesday the Day We Take Back Our Country!

Sun Sep 04, 2005 at 12:01:40 PM PDT

As I'm sure most of you are already aware, Dr. Death Bill Frist is planning to move forward with a vote to repeal the Estate Tax next week, likely on Tuesday.

This is a perfect opportunity for Democratic Senators to stand up as a collective group and clearly define the Values Gap between Republicans and Democrats (that is, if they can find their spines).

How?  All Democratic Senators should travel as a group down to New Orleans on Tuesday to assist in aid operations.  No business as usual on Capitol Hill. Expose the Repugs for the uncaring, duplicitous, calculating, cynical scumbags they really are.

If this is an idea you support, please recommend and contact your Senators.  Let's get this moving. I'm serious. It's about time.  Christ, it's way past time.

Responding with Fury.

Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 10:16:00 AM PDT

It's time.  It's past time to respond with the fury and ferocity that our national situation demands.  Who will stand up to speak for those who have been disenfranchised, marginalized and are now being left to die?  I'm sick and tired of the Republicans crowning themselves the champions of "moral outrage" when it is us--the majority of Americans and our supposed leaders who claim to be acting on our behalf--that should be responding with fury.

Our Democratic leadership sat silent while the voices of thousands upon thousands of our citizens were thrown in the dustpin of history not once but twice in national elections. It was no coincidence that they were predominantly poor, that they were disproportionately black.

Our Democratic leadership sat silent and even lined up behind our so-called President when he led us into an unjustified, ill-conceived war under false pretenses.  It was no coincidence that so many of the young men and women sent to die and kill in the false name of American security were poor and of color.

The Perfect Storm.

Thu Sep 01, 2005 at 09:30:35 AM PDT

My thoughts are still far too scattered (and shattered) to make much sense: a weird mix of horror, sadness, ANGER, bitterness, cynicism, and yes, even... hope.  Many on dkos and other places have captured a lot of what I've been feeling over the last few days far more eloquently than I ever could.  But there is one thing I want to share--my growing feeling that now is the time.

Time for what? Time for the Democratic leadership (I gotta say, sorely tempted to throw a "sic" in there) to say what must be said:
(follow me down)
