Who’s Afraid of Antioch College...and Why Are They Trying to Shut It Down?
Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 01:43:14 PM PDT
An article published in "Revolution Online" brings up a worrisome trend in the world of higher education. Just when all of our governmental institutions are under attack by right-wing ideologues, another front opens under increased pressure from Mr. David Horowitz and his ilk who would love to see all "left-wing" educational institutions disappear...and the students nurtured in those institutions limited to those who are intent on fitting in to the current social structures, rather than challenging them.
You can judge the seriousness of the attack by the varied reactions to it. While progressive/leftist sources are mobilizing to prevent its closing, George Will and others on the right are fairly dancing with glee over Antioch College's rumored demise. Mr. Will's trashing of Antioch can be read here:

As I have written many times on this blog, those who seek substantive change in the area of EQUAL (rather than SIMILAR) rights for members of the LGBTQ Community cannot rely on a Democratic Party landslide in Congress to accomplish our goal. Not when so many among the Democratic Party "leadership" have been so intent on running away from the issue of equal rights...and who will continue to run away from our issues for as long as we allow them to.

We're getting a look at what House Democrats are proposing for "Electoral Reform". Apparently their idea of "reform" is to limit our choices even further than they are already limited by a two-party system that doesn't encourage coloring outside the corporate-drawn lines.
While most of us are complaining about how weak and ineffectual the Democratic Party leadership have shown themselves to be, the folks who toil inside those Congressional offices have come up with a further curb on the 'Marketplace of Ideas'. Their solution to the problem of galloping Republicanitis is to insure that any challenges to Republican control be limited to DNC-approved candidates. What we need is 'Fewer Choices' for voter consideration.
The Green Party has put out a press release detailing Democratic Party strategy for opening up political discussion (or, more accurately, political DIalogue). The Green Party press release follows:
A GENUINE Hero Has Died

A lot of people never heard of Hugh Thompson; but he was one of the greatest heroes of the Vietnam War. He died this week, of cancer, at the age of 62. I think he deserves to be remembered, not for 'fighting in Vietnam', but for the courage he displayed in doing what was right while so many around him were doing wrong.
