Take Action in Virginia to Defend the Rights of Gay Students

Thu Feb 03, 2005 at 04:32:52 PM PDT

Fellow bloggers, we need help!  This came from the Human Rights Campaign website:

"Del. Glenn Weatherholtz (R-Harrisonburg) has introduced a bill, HB 2868, that is intended to bar Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs) from Virginia's schools.

While stating that the bill is to prohibit the "supporting, assisting or justifying any lifestyle involving sexual behavior", Del. Weatherholtz makes the blantantly untrue assumption that Gay Straight Alliances focus on sexual activity."

What YOU can do to stop this, and what we're doing to fight this at my high school is below the fold.

2005 VA Election Outlook

There have been several good diaries on DailyKos about the 2006 races (See this one, by MrLiberal), but let's not forget that Virginia and New Jersey will vote in 2005.  I'm not qualified to talk about New Jersey politics, but I am active in Virginian politics, and will discuss the candidates here.

See below the fold for in-depth analysis of the various candidates.

Washington Recount Update -- Good News!

Sat Dec 18, 2004 at 07:44:41 AM PDT

I haven't seen one of the excellent diaries that another blogger has been posting reguarly on this topic, so I decided to go ahead and post this one.

38 out of 39 counties have reported their recounted numbers in the Governor's race.  King county, the 10,000 pound Democratic gorilla, is the only one that hasn't reported yet.

I added together the recounted numbers from the 38 reporting counties and the original numbers from King county, and got this:
Gregoire (D)- 1,373,003
Rossi (R)- 1,373,053
Bennett (L)- 82,351
This means that Gregoire must pick up a net of at least 51 new votes in King county in order to win, which probably makes it possible for her to win without the 500 and something ballots that are currently being contested in the courts.  Previous estimates were that Gregoire would need a greater gain in King to win.

Bottom line: I'm feeling the best about this race that I have in weeks.  They've found plenty of Gergoire votes in the Democratic counties, and done well enough in the GOP counties, to make a Democratic win a real possibility.
