TWO-MINUTE ACTIVISM -- Primary Reform

Fri Dec 10, 2004 at 12:58:32 PM PDT

Congressman David Price (D-NC4) and former labor secretary Alexis Herman have been selected to lead a commission to consider reforming our current defunct system of choosing candidates.  CNN has the story here:
Democrats mull changes to primary schedule

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) -- The Democratic National Committee formed a 40-member panel Friday to study whether to shake up the dominance that Iowa and New Hampshire wield in presidential elections.

Former Labor Secretary Alexis Herman and Rep. David Price, D-North Carolina will lead the commission that is charged with studying the election calendar and recommending any changes.

The first meeting is slated for early next year, with regional hearings planned and a final report due by the end of 2005.

Officials in Iowa and New Hampshire vigorously oppose any changes. They argue that voters in those states are uniquely engaged in the primary process and give candidates a tough vetting, while a national nominating process would focus on large cities and neglect rural areas.

Powell warns Ukraine over 'result'
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/11/24/ukraine/index.html

Ukraine's election commission declared Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych the winner of a hotly contested presidential runoff, but U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell quickly dismissed the contest as marred by fraud.
Pro-Moscow Yanukovych had 49.46 percent of the vote while opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko was named on 46.61 of the ballots, the commission said Wednesday.
However, an exit poll conducted under a Western-funded program gave Yushchenko 54 percent of the vote to Yanukovych's 43 percent. Another poll put Yushchenko ahead by 49.4 to 45.9 percent.

Powell calls Ukraine's election fradulent in light of the fact that exit polls didn't quite match up...
Too bad the same standard isn't applied in this country
