What the hell is the FairTax?

Wed Apr 19, 2006 at 08:22:42 AM PDT

While reading the comments to ShortBus's diary "Corporate taxes as % of fed revenue: 1950: 27.5%, 2003: 7.4%
"
and some posts on Democratic Underground, I noticed quite a few people talking about the
FairTax
. While it has some supporters in the progressive blogosphere, they are outnumbered by its opponents who, rightly or wrongly, feel that it is too regressive.

In this diary, I am going to attempt to do some FairTax mythbusting to clear up some of the misconceptions folks have about the FairTax.

Let's put an end to "liberal fascism"

Tue Nov 23, 2004 at 08:04:26 AM PDT

When conservatives speak of "liberal fascism", they are presenting the idea that liberals think they know what is best for everybody else. While we shouldn't buy into their arguments, they make a point. I'm watching cspan right now. They are airing a live press conference called "Video Game Report Card" with Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman and Rep. Betty McCollum. Not only is Joe whining about sex in video games, he also managed to bring up the NBA brawl, desperate housewives, and Janet Jackson's breast.

Kerry and Third Parties

Sun Oct 10, 2004 at 08:07:22 PM PDT

This is my first diary... I hope you enjoy it :).

Today, C-Span showed a debate between the four largest third party candidates for President of the United States. From the Libertarians to the Socialists and from the archconservative Constitution Party to the leftist Green Party, this debate covered a wide range of issues from all around the political spectrum.

Most polls show that Americans would like more voiced and more choices when it comes to politics. In my opinion, it would be wise of John Kerry to embrace third parties instead of running from them by publicly endorsing election reform, such as proportional representation and Condercet, Instant Runoff, or Approval voting. Doing so might nullify the spoiler effect by causing third party liberals to support Kerry. It also doesn't hurt to take a position that is so popular with the American people who almost all agree that the two-party system is crap.
