I'm a lurker and don't ever post diaries here, but I'm feeling excessively snarky at the moment and figure maybe I'll feel a little less peevish if I put this rant out there.

I read an article in The New York Times online this morning (forwarded to me in email) that suggests that taking away our gift shopping ritual could actually have adverse psychological consequences. Of course, what it says in print is "gift giving," but paragraph after painful paragraph make it clear that what is meant is shopping, plain and simple.
