Obama vs ClintonMcCain
Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 05:45:18 AM PDT
Now that Clinton has developed the narrative that, because of experience, McCain and Clinton are both better than Obama. It follows naturally that McCain is better than Clinton, because he has more experience.
Obama now needs to lump ClintonMcCain together and run against them both.
On a judgment level, HRC's praise of McCain is an exact parallel to her authorization for the war in the first place.
Big Gains in the Burger Market! Up 145 Points!
Mon Oct 01, 2007 at 07:10:54 AM PDT
I am not an economist, so I have long wondered how the increase in market price of stocks relates to the value of the dollar. The two topics are rarely covered together. It often seems as if they must be unrelated.
However, it seems obvious that if the value of something goes down, you have to use more of it to get something else. For example, if the US dollar goes down, you have to use more of them to buy a meal in Canada.
But we never hear about the value of "Meals in Canada" going up. Imagine a financial reporter crowing about a Banner Day! in the Canadian Burger Market as the the average value of a basket of burgers from across Canada rises by 145 Points!
Bush connects "killing fields" to vietnam
Tue Aug 21, 2007 at 10:09:57 PM PDT
According to CNN, Bush will invoke Vietnam to demonstrate why we should stay in Iraq.
http://www.cnn.com/...
One of his references is to the "Killing Fields", implying that they occurred because the US left Vietnam.
Apparently he will say:
"one unmistakable legacy of Vietnam is that the price of America's withdrawal was paid by millions of innocent citizens, whose agonies would add to our vocabulary new terms like 'boat people,' 're-education camps' and 'killing fields,'..."
The problem with this reference is that the Killing Fields were in Cambodia, not Vietnam.
In Cambodia, Pol Pot was killing his own people, and the world was pretty much unable to do anything until, in 1979 Vietnam invaded Cambodia, deposed Pol Pot and stopped the killing.
If we had stayed in Vietnam, the Vietnamese army would not have been strong enough to stop Pol Pot. Would the US have expanded the war to include Cambodia? As I recall, there was no indication that the North Vietnamese were getting tired of the war. How many more US casualties does Bush think we should have endured?

Listening to Iraqi Sami Rasouli
Mon Mar 19, 2007 at 09:06:32 AM PDT
I originally posted this as a comment in another thread, but decided to make it a diary.
On Sunday, I heard Sami Rasouli, an Iraqi American who has traveled to Iraq repeatedly since 2004 promoting peace. After 20 years in the US, he left a successful middle class life here in order to go back to help his native country. He does not live in the Green Zone, but travels freely in the country. He speaks fluent English and Arabic.
He made the following points:
As long as US troops are in Iraq, Iraqis who oppose foreign domination will fight back with violence.

Grover Norquist: ""The Democrats cannot be bribed, cajoled or threatened.."
Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 08:47:04 AM PDT
We should not forget that Bush still is going to try to attack Social Security, Medicare and other "entitlement programs" after the election.
However, Grover Norquist says the Democrats are too united, and too ethical to be co-opted.
According to Washington Post:
"Grover Norquist, a leading GOP strategist, said he can envision no circumstance in which Bush could secure any overhaul of the Social Security program
"The Democrats cannot be bribed, cajoled or threatened into voting for Social Security reform -- it can't happen," he said."
Yaayy!

Ongoing, online, fundraising rummage sale?
Sun May 21, 2006 at 01:02:20 PM PDT
If you could buy, sell or give away an item in a venue that would benefit a liberal cause or a liberal democratic canditate, would you give it a try?
Liberals and progressives don't have the deep pockets that the wealthy corporate repuglican set has, but collectively we earn and spend a great deal more money than they do. I have been puzzling over ways that we might harness some of that spending in order to benefit causes we believe in.
My idea is that the Daily Kos site could promote on ongoing online classifieds web site, but with one special condition.

Fake democrat Randy Kelly trails challenger
Thu Oct 27, 2005 at 06:48:14 PM PDT
The mayor of Saint Paul is Randy Kelly. He calls himself a "lifelong democrat", yet in 2004 he actively campaigned for George W Bush and has supported Minnesota repub governor, Tim Pawlenty.
He claimed at the time that his endorsement of Bush was because he saw a bumper sticker that said "I hate Bush" or something similar. He wanted to support Bush because Bush would win the war in Iraq and bring the country together.
Democrats in Saint Paul are getting ready to kick his ass into the back pages of history on election day.
Minnesota victory
Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 06:23:56 AM PDT
In Minnesota, the Republican party lost a lot of seats in State house races. Minnesota voter turnout was highest in the nation.
In Minnesota, the Repubs have blocked public investment in roads. They tried vainly to stop light rail, which has been carrying twice as many riders as predicted since it opened in mid summer.
Defend Patty Wetterling
Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 05:01:33 PM PDT
The Repubs are attacking Patty Wetterling (Minnesota's 6th Congressional District candidate) mercilessly in negative advertising. This is a woman who is nationally known as a tireless advocate for children, and missing children in particular. Her son was kidnapped in 1989 at the age of eleven, and she has turned this tragedy into a personal mission to help others.

John Walsh, Americas Most Wanted, encourages Minnesotans to vote for Wetterling, saying "I'm a republican and I am outraged at the false attacks being made on my friend Patty Wetterling"
Walsh endorses Patty Wetterling for congress.
The Negative repug ads are running several times every thirty minutes right now. The John Walsh advert is running about 1/3 as often.
What amazes me is that the repubs think that attacking Patty as some kind of left wing nut case could be at all helpful. I think people would be repulsed by this kind of attack.
It just shows to me that the Repubs will do absolutely anything to try to win a seat.
