What's the "jerk tax" you'd pay?

Sun Jun 22, 2008 at 10:20:09 AM PDT

This diary was inspired by Devilstower's "Good Ideas that are Bad Politics" post and the subsequent comments, most of which were about the suggestion of a 55 mph speed limit, which many people didn't want to do.

Almost all of us are supporters of the environment over, say, oil companies. And when you ask us what should be done to protect the environment, we all have some ideas...which usually affect other people.

"I don't smoke, so smokers should pay higher taxes."
"I bike to work. People who drive on highways should have to pay tolls."
"I drive a hybrid which gets 38 mpg; people who drive cars with less than 37 mpg mileage should pay a guzzler tax."

This diary is about what things YOU do that you know is bad for the environment or society, and whether you'd stop doing them or pay more to keep doing them in a perfect world. I'll start, after the jump.

At least John McCain is pro-choice

Tue Apr 01, 2008 at 05:54:45 PM PDT

Today I overheard a conversation among some young girls. One of them said she wasn't really happy with Hillary Clinton, but would vote for her over John McCain because she's pro-choice.

The other girl corrected her, assuring her that "McCain is totally pro-choice." When the first girl found that surprising, she was assured, "I'm absolutely sure about that. All the candidates are the same on abortion."

Oooohh, Mitt! Don't leave me now

Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 12:20:32 PM PDT

Dont say it's the end of the road.
Remember the Democrats we sent?
I need you, Mitt,
To put through the shredder in all the debates,
Oh Mitt! Dont leave me now.
How could you go?
When you know how I need you,
To beat to a pulp on an election night.
Oh Mitt, Dont leave me now.
How can you treat me this way?
Running away. Oh Mitt,
Why are you running away?

Report from Boulder's Democratic caucus

Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 08:40:09 PM PDT

This is for those of you in primary states who have never seen a caucus. Hope you enjoy the report; I just got back.

I voted on the University of Colorado campus (I'm a professor, and I live in the on-campus faculty housing). There are four precincts, each one having about 100 people. (99 were in my precinct.) The woman running it said per-precinct turnout is usually about 25. Almost everyone there was a student. As someone who's tried organizing on campus before, it's surprising and encouraging that turnout was so strong.
