Joe Conason talking with Al Franken: Dean Vindicated

Fri Nov 10, 2006 at 01:04:17 PM PDT

I was outraged by Carville's comments on Dean today. So I am very pleased to hear a conversation between Joe Conason, one of my favorate columnists Al Franken on AAR at the last hour of Al Franken show. The topic was Joe's new article in Salon: Howard Dean, vindicated

Rita and Katrina Evacuations: A Comparison

Thu Sep 22, 2005 at 10:20:59 AM PDT

As a New Orleans resident and Katrina evacuee who is right now sitting in front of a computer at a Houston hotel just by NW Freeway (Highway 290), a major highway to Austin having been turned into a big parking lot under 90s degree high temperature, I am in a unique position to compare two evacuations. Our conclusion so far is that the Katrina evacuation is far more successful than the Rita one. The relatively smooth Katrina evacuation should be credited to the city, parish governments in the greater New Orleans area, as well as Louisiana state government. Unfortunately, the Republican’s blaming local government spin, as well as MSM’s ignorance, made many people think the local government official in New Orleans are totally unprepared.

Let It Be History: Today's New Orleans Times-Picayune

Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 01:54:12 PM PDT

Today's Times-Picayune (New Orleans' major news paper) should become a part of the modern American history.

Look at the extra bold headline "HELP US, PLEASE" and the photo of a desperate black woman appealing for help.

  • Also on the front page: Local leaders call relief efforts too little, too late.

  • On page 15: The Editoral - "Yes, we are worth it". Some quote:
Especially heartless were U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and the writers of an editorial that appeared Wednesday in the Republican-
American, a newspaper in Waterbury, Conn. Mr. Hastert was quoted by the
Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill., saying it makes no sense to rebuild
New Orleans where it is. "It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed,"
he said.

I want salute Times-Picayune for their great journalism, especially under such extraordinary difficult circumstance. They could not print the paper version of the new paper, but they put the PDF version on-line from the day one of this catastrophic disaster.

NBC Nightly News: A Powerful Indictment of the Bush Co.

Thu Sep 01, 2005 at 04:01:22 PM PDT

I am watching the NBC Nightly News right now. I must say that prehaps the MSM finally got it. This is a powerful indictment of the Bush Co. Brian William is broadcating live from Metairie, a New Orleans suburb. In the first ten minutes, NBC's reporter in New Orleans reported the choas in New Orleans today, with some "most disturbing pictures" (Brian William's words) including victims dying. Then he showed a few seconds of Bush's press conference today, followed by the question asked by the people trapped in New Orleans "Where is the help?" He also commented that this looks like from a third-world country, but this is not Iraq, not Somali.

I hope someone has taped it and put it on-line.

CNN Front Page: Scene of Anarchy (in New Orleans Convention Center)

Thu Sep 01, 2005 at 11:27:39 AM PDT

No need for more evidence for incompetence of this president. Just check the front page of CNN.com: 'Sence of Anarchy: We are out here like pure animals' .

Also:

  • A photo of the body of a woman who died at the convention center sits in a wheelchair.

  • Victims say they've been abandoned.

  • Marooned doctors plead "Please help us".

  • Bush tells victims:'A lot of help coming' (What an a**hole!)

  • Video: 'People are dying in front of us'

  • Video: Anger and outrage

New Orleans: Water has become level with the Lake in the city

Wed Aug 31, 2005 at 11:25:39 AM PDT

Frome the WWLTV's Katrina Blog:
:
  • 12:11 P.M. - Army Corps: Water has become level with the Lake in the city so no more water should flow into the city, except at high tide.
  • 11:33 A.M. - Director Walter Maestri: We have no food or water for the evacuees. Says emergency workers have seized the food and water and drinks from Sam's Club, Wal-Mart and other groceries for evacuees, but he said that is all gone. Says water supply is gone. More water expected, but its not there right now. Says evacuees are getting upset and harried.
  • This means the efforts (or lack of) to fix the levee breach has failed and the process of flooding the entire eastbank of the City of New Orleans now is compelte.

New Orleans Mayor Nagin: Entire City Will Soon Be Underwater

Tue Aug 30, 2005 at 10:16:31 PM PDT

From WDSU (NBC Affiliate in New Orleans):

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is "very upset" that an attempt to fix the breach in the levee at the 17th Street canal has failed, and he said the challenges that the city is facing have "escalated to another level."

In an exclusive interview with WDSU anchor Norman Robinson, Nagin said the rising water has caused the generators to stop operating because the water got too high. Due to that, Nagin said he's been advised by the head technician at the sewage and water board that water in the east bank area of Orleans and Jefferson parishes will rise to levels equal to Lake Pontchartrain.

Nagin said the sandbagging was scheduled for midday, but the Blackhawk helicopters needed to help did not show up. He said the sandbags were ready and all the helicopter had to do was "show up." He said after his afternoon helicopter tour of the city, he was assured that officials had a plan and a timeline to drop the sandbags on the levee breach.
