Rev Jim Nelson for GA 1st

Thu Mar 30, 2006 at 05:37:21 PM PDT

Some of you might be familiar with Congressman Jack Kingston of Georgia's 1st District. This district comprises the southeast corner of Georgia -- from the south end of Savannah to the Florida border -- and includes a large military constituency at Fort Stewart. (Kingston is filthy with Abramoff money and in the pocket of agribusiness, but I digress...)

For the first time, this year Kingston has a Democratic opponent, a Methodist minister named Jim Nelson. Few people give Nelson much of a chance of unseating Kingston, but even if he doesn't win, a strong showing could make a significant change in the politics of the district.

I invite you to visit Nelson's website at www.electjimnelson.com. I think you'll like what you see.

While you're there please consider signing his Contract with American Veterans and ponying up a few bucks to help the cause.

(By the way, I'm not aligned with the Nelson campaign in any way. I just live in the district and would love to see Kingston go down.)

What a tragedy.

Mon Jun 20, 2005 at 05:47:19 PM PDT

What a tragedy.

That's the final sentence in an absolutely jaw-dropping indictment of Bush just posted by Digby.

This is his prologue:

In the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility ... it would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.

Show the Poor Man some love

Sat Jun 18, 2005 at 07:36:20 AM PDT

Earlier this week, Kos killed the Poor Man. Not really; what happened was that Kos linked to a brilliant post by the Poor Man, and, just like that, his bandwidth limit was exceeded, and his site has been down until today.

Did your Rep sign the Conyers Letter? [UPDATE]

Fri Jun 17, 2005 at 05:21:28 PM PDT

Every one of us who lives in a House district represented by a Democrat ought to contact our Representative and either thank him/her for signing the Conyers Letter or express disappointment that he/she did not. (Heck, even if your rep is a semi-reasonable Republican who might listen, sound off to him too.)

It's you weekend homework assignment!

Below the fold, I've included a list of all House Dems, with the signers of the Conyers letter in bold.

[editor's note, by Omar] I believe this now includes the "additional signers," as of June 15.

Some Humans Ain't Human

Thu Jun 16, 2005 at 10:07:59 AM PDT

I was alerted today (thanks Dr Alterman) to the existence of a wonderful new John Prine album Fair and Square. John Prine, to his many fans, is a genuine national treasure. His clever, simple, and uniquely eccentric lyrics are true poetic art and priceless bits of Americana.

Anyway, the real reason for this diary is to share with you the lyrics of a remarkable song called Some Humans Ain't Human, which are quoted below the fold.

Out of the Memory Hole: PNAC , Bolton, and the ICC

Sat May 28, 2005 at 05:28:14 PM PDT

Many of us are familiar with the Project for the New American Century, in spite of the fact that it's been mentioned, as far as I know, no more than once or twice in the SCLM. For those who are not aware of PNAC, it's a neocon "think tank" formed in 1997, and it includes as members such luminaries as Dick Cheney, Bill Kristol, Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld, I. Lewis "Scooter "Libby, William Bennett, Norman Podhoretz, and Stephen Rosen among others --- including John R. Bolton.

Sanity breaking out all over?

Thu May 26, 2005 at 07:32:24 PM PDT

Oy, oy, oy... What a week it's been (so far)!

It looks like we have roughly 42 damn fine Democratic Senators, but I digress...

Right now I'm completely blown away by three brilliant (and related) blog posts I've just read. (I know, I know..., and I'm hesitant to write a diary like this, but this stuff is great. And besides, Maryscott opened the door with her diary on a Rude Pundit post. Sorry. ;-) )

Walter Pincus nails Bush's ass again [Updated again]

Sat May 21, 2005 at 03:42:34 PM PDT

In a new Washington Post article -- likely to be on page 1 tomorrow -- Walter Pincus lays out a blistering assessment of the Bush administration's dissembling prior to the Iraq invasion.

Update [2005-5-21 22:58:54 by Omar]: Apparently someone at WaPo made a weeeeee mistake. It now appears that Pincus's piece will appear on page A26. That's right; not A1, but A26! All I can say is: WTF?

Update [2005-5-21 23:15:29 by Omar]: It seems they have also changed the title of the article from More Evidence Of Bush Aides' Doubts on Iraq to Prewar Findings Worried Analysts.

Deadwood Democrats

Sat May 21, 2005 at 01:14:09 PM PDT

As a fan of HBO's Deadwood, I was fascinated by Matt Welch's Salon article, The new face of the Democrats, the title of which appears beneath the glaring mug of Ian McShane as the remarkable Al Swearengen.

CNN Hates You

Sat Apr 30, 2005 at 02:51:52 PM PDT

(CNN)--  Seemingly hysterical and sobbing, a Georgia bride-to-be dialed 911 to report she had been kidnapped near her Atlanta home and driven more than 1,000 miles to New Mexico. But it took only a few hours of questioning for authorities to learn the truth. Jennifer Wilbanks, the subject of a nationwide search, had fled her wedding of her own volition.

And by the way: Eat shit, America!

Today marks a new low for the already deeply fallen world of cable "news."

Georgia Governor to my mother: You can't vote.

Sat Apr 23, 2005 at 11:24:26 AM PDT

My mother is 90 years old and under hospice care, so it's a moot point, but still. Under a new law signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue on Friday, Georgia voters must present one of the following forms of picture ID in order to vote:

  • Driver's license
  • Passport
  • State-issued photo ID (includes public school and public university IDs)
  • Military photo ID
  • Tribal photo ID

My mother, believe it or not, has never had a driver's license or a passport. If she has any form of photo ID, I'm not aware of it. She has always lived in a very small town where poll workers knew who she was. Now, assuming she were physically and mentally able to vote, she would have to get some sort of state-issued photo ID. This is simply absurd.

Sticks and Stones -- CBC on U.S. Media

Mon Apr 11, 2005 at 06:24:48 PM PDT

Nothing here but a pointer to something good. The CBC has done a very nice program on the freak show that is the American SCLM. It is really worth seeing:

Academic Freedom Under Siege in Florida

Fri Apr 08, 2005 at 03:11:23 PM PDT

The University of Central Florida chapter of the United Faculty of Florida sent out the following email yesterday concerning the pending "Academic Bill of Rights" -- House Bill 837 in the Florida Legislature.

All Florida Kossacks should contact their legislators and let them know how stupid this crackpot crusade of David Horowitz really is. Convenient links may be found here:

The rest of us red-staters need to get prepared, 'cause this carnival is coming soon to our town.

In Praise of the Daily Howler

Fri Apr 08, 2005 at 09:50:09 AM PDT

Bob Somerby continues to do highly commendable work at the Daily Howler. He stands alone, as far as I can tell, in his relentless criticism not only of Russert, Matthews, and their ilk, but also of cowardly, ill-prepared, milquetoast liberal spokespeople, whose names I'll leave it for you to discover.

Sure, Somerby's style may seem repetitive and vicious at times, but his analytic skills are tremendous, and he consistently provides the web's best commentary on the SCLM.

Somerby's post today provides such a concise summation of the pathetic state of the press corps that I couldn't resist posting the following excerpt here. Enjoy.

How to change CNN

Mon Apr 04, 2005 at 09:08:59 AM PDT

I apologize for the brevity of this diary, but I think this simple idea is important enough to warrant some discussion.

I've heard numerous calls for boycotts against CNN (and other elements of the SCLM). Boycotts may make us feel better about ourselves, but, frankly, no one else is going to give a shit.

Think about it: CNN is part of Time-Warner, Inc., which is a publicly owned corporation. Time-Warner's one and only obligation is to make money for its shareholders. Consequently, management is (theoretically) obliged to listen to what its shareholders have to say.

The Idiotic Lumping of Rather, Jordan, Gannon

Tue Feb 15, 2005 at 08:18:40 AM PDT

I'm really, really sick of the way the corporate media is lumping together the cases of Dan Rather, Eason Jordan, and Jeff Gannon/Guckert. It's yet another example of fake "balance" for the sake of appearing "unbiased."

Let's recap:

Dan Rather. Tarred and feathered for exercising bad judgement after a long, respectable career. (Not to mention the high likelihood that he was set up.)

Eason Jordan. Tarred and feathered for one ill-advised, politically-incorrect statement after a long, respectable career.

Jeff Gannon/Guckert. Exposed as a complete fraud with a sordid (and criminal) past. Possibly connected with people in the Whitehouse; possibly has information about or was involved in the outing of Valerie Plame.

Now tell me: Which of these doesn't fit the pattern?

NY Times wages war on blogosphere

Mon Jan 03, 2005 at 11:10:35 AM PDT

In an astonishingly stupid article in today's Times, John Schwartz blows the lid off of internet nuttery! Evidently, kooky people sometimes post kooky things on the web. Who knew!

And just guess which bloggers were held up for scorn: why it's those wacky Democrats at Democratic Underground!
