California Fires: Why was the air quality data changed?

Thu Jul 10, 2008 at 01:16:19 PM PDT

I'm at my computer right now. It's in an upstairs office -- a converted bedroom -- in my home in Sacramento. I haven't been out of my house in a few days. I'm trapped by smoke drifting into the valley. I'm one of those "sensitive" to air pollution (I have mild asthma), so I'm pretty well stuck until our air clears.

Jimmy Carter: Run, Al, Run!

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 03:23:08 PM PDT

In an interview scheduled to air Sunday, Jimmy Carter told George Stephanopoulos he wants Al Gore to run in 2008, but that he's worried Gore won't do it.

ABC's Political Radar blog quotes President Carter:

. . . . "If Al should decide to run -- which I'm afraid he won't -- I would support Al Gore."

The former Democratic President asserted Gore could accomplish much more in the White House than he ever could as a private citizen, saying to Stephanopoulos, "His burning issue now is global warming and preventing it.  He can do infinitely more to accomplish that goal as in the incumbent in the White House, than he can making even movies that get -- you know, that get Oscars."

Cheney Spokesman Bugs Out

Tue Oct 11, 2005 at 11:14:59 AM PDT

According to an article published at Raw Story today, Cheney spokesman Steve Schmidt left the country on the 3rd and -- wow, how convenient -- won't be back until the 26th:
The chief spokesman for Vice President Dick Cheney, Steve Schmidt, left the United States Oct. 3 and won't return until Oct. 26, just as the investigation into who outed a covert CIA agent wraps up, RAW STORY has confirmed.

Schmidt has left for Iraq. A RAW STORY email sent to Schmidt's private White House address Tuesday yielded this reply: "I will be out of the country from October 3rd through October 26th and will have VERY limited email access. For assistance, please contact Jon Berrier at 202-XXX-XXXX. Thank you."

Military recruiters targeting my 9th grader

Sat Oct 01, 2005 at 07:36:54 PM PDT

Today my 14-year-old attended an all-day event for students planning to become doctors, the AMSAARC Annual Pre-Med Conference. This event was required by his high school, where he's enrolled in a special academy for pre-pre-med students.

We just picked him up. He spent a good half hour unloading swag he picked up from the medical schools and associations attending the conference and telling us about the cool NIH program he'd like to attend in a couple of years.

NOT SO COOL, he said, were all the military recruiters. A number of his fellow 9th graders gave these recruiters their names, addresses, phone numbers, much to his dismay and despite his efforts to talk some sense into them. I guess that 14-year-olds are now fair game.

Neo-Nazi Billboard in Florida

Mon Mar 21, 2005 at 11:50:15 AM PDT

According to the Kevin Alfred Strom of the neo-Nazi web publication National Vanguard, the sweet Aryan lass -- "a lovely White woman seated in a field of flowers. She has no Black arm around her. She is part of no multiracial "team." Her fair skin is softly shining in the lights as you get closer. She is the image of natural beauty, innocence, wholesomeness. You notice she bears the symbol of life on her simple White dress" -- is pictured on one of three highway billboards currently sponsored by this group nationwide.

CPAC video: Franken's so-called 'meltdown'

Sat Feb 19, 2005 at 12:40:23 PM PDT

I read somewhere on dKos yesterday that Al Franken, who broadcast his show from CPAC on Thursday and Friday, had had a "meltdown" and thrown a chair at Michael Medved.

Here's what really happened: Medved invited Franken to come be interviewed on his show, but kinda sorta forgot to tell him that Swift Boat Liars' John O'Neill would also be present.

Franken objected, telling Medved that if he'd known in advance that O'Neill would also appear, he would have had time to prepare.

As part of the Gannon investigation, we've put together a database to map relationships between Gannon/Guckert and other people and organizations.

SusanG helped recruit a crack team of data researchers/enterers and now the database has nearly 100 different people and 90 different organizations.

PropaGannon: Kerry to be "first gay president"

Thu Feb 10, 2005 at 04:51:00 PM PDT

This is the diary to collect and condense information about "Jeff Gannon"'s "Kerry as 'first gay president'" piece, so please don't recommend it.

I've been Googling this for a while. During the 2004 campaign season, the "first gay president" meme wasn't limited only to Mr. G's speculation, nor was it limited to wink-wink-nudge-nudging about JK. Even Shrub got labeled as "the first gay president."

Here's what I've got so far:

Dem Breakfast in Sacramento + DNC W. Caucus: my observations

Sat Jan 22, 2005 at 07:51:19 PM PDT

First of all, it was great fun. What a strong sense of energy and optimism -- maybe it's from being a member of the minority party (nowhere to go but up), maybe it was participating in an event in the presence of Howard Dean; whatever the cause, it feels like a good time to be a progressive Democrat.

[editor's note, by marisa] Fiat Lux corrected my attribution of the breakfast; it was sponsored by California Democratic Clubs.

NYT: Torturers sue AP over pictures

Tue Dec 28, 2004 at 09:05:25 PM PDT

This is about the sickest thing I've heard of this year. File this under "rendered (nearly) speechless":

6 Members of Elite Navy Force Sue News Agency Over Photos

Six members of the Navy Seals and two of their wives sued The Associated Press and one of its reporters yesterday for distributing photos of the Seals that apparently show them treating Iraqi prisoners harshly.

One wife had put the photos on what she believed was a password-protected Web site, a lawyer for the group said. The suit, filed in Superior Court in San Diego, charges The A.P. with invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It does not name the plaintiffs.

Yeah, we wouldn't want their "privacy" invaded any further, now would we?

Moderate Republican sees "Fascist Revolution"

Tue Dec 28, 2004 at 08:35:03 PM PDT

"Emmanuel Ortiz" -- a nom de blog to protect the politically-connected -- is a moderate Republican who's been documenting the 2004 election irregularities since the beginning of this month on his blog, Scam-O-Rama..

Scanning Scam-O-Rama doesn't yield much new data for the average obsessive Kossack. What is different, however, is that it's written by a Republican lawyer. Ortiz writes in his (truly refreshing) profile:

My political career has included opposition research for a Republican gubenatorial campaign (the most successful in my state's history), national fund raising for an unsuccessful Republican Presidential campaign, and a Republican campaign for US Senate. Quite simply, I am horrified. . . .

Deflating winger faux persecution

Sun Dec 19, 2004 at 06:47:10 PM PDT

I participate in another website (when I can drag myself away from DKos, that is), which is nonpolitical but has one political forum. The right-wing types there often affect an attitude of victimization.

For example, yesterday someone liberal there referred to "Bushwhackers," meaning the people in the Bush administration. A couple of the wingers then objected to this term, calling it personally insulting. They claimed that that particular thread was evidence of a "poisonous atmosphere."

Bush makes prochoice comment! (with a poll)

Sat Dec 18, 2004 at 02:58:13 PM PDT

Okay, not really. However, I heard an NPR story about Shrub's speech to the "economy summit" this week, and I thought, "Ha, if I were on the right, I'd take that soundbite and start hollerin' that Bush flip-flopped on abortion!"

Here's Shrub's "pro-choice rhetoric":

. . . in all we do to reform health care, we've got to make sure the decisions are made by doctors and patients, not by bureaucrats in our nation's capital.

Hey, he said it! I heard him! That kind of thing is pure Rovian gold (if the left did that kinda thing).

Scary Sen. Inhofe: Iraq Mess = Clinton's Fault

Sat Dec 18, 2004 at 12:35:37 PM PDT

"You go to war with the Army you have," Rumsfeld said earlier this month in response to troop complaints about equipment shortages.

He shoulda talked to Oklahoma senator James Inhofe. Inhofe would have set him straight: you don't go to war with the Army you want, you go to war with the war that Clinton wants!

More from yesterday's Muskogee (Oklahoma) Phoenix article, Inhofe says Clinton's cuts made Iraq mess below:

A Letter From Your Boss: Dear Worker,

Wed Dec 15, 2004 at 05:47:46 AM PDT

Bite us.

Signed, your long-term employer.

From today's San Francisco Chronicle:

Retiree health benefits decline
Future medical programs for today's workers evaporating at a pace faster than ever

For today's workers hoping for medical benefits when they retire, the future is looking increasingly grim.

Eight percent of employers interviewed said they had eliminated subsidized health benefits for future retirees this year and an additional 11 percent said they are likely to do so next year, according to a survey of 333 large firms by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and the consulting firm Hewitt Associates released Tuesday. . . .

Like the Proverbial Headless Chicken

Tue Dec 14, 2004 at 09:48:12 PM PDT

For many, 2004 is the first year we've participated in political activism. I registered to volunteer with the Kerry campaign early after he won the primaries, then registered with my state's Democratic party. I donated money in response to their emails. I called swing state voters -- several hundred of them. I wanted to do MORE. I wanted to HELP. Like many, many others, I signed up with ACT and MoveOn.

This felt good, empowering. We were doing something. We were coming together! We were moving on! We were ACTIVISTS! So what the heck happened?
