Jennings, Olbermann, and respect.

Thu Apr 07, 2005 at 12:45:46 AM PDT

Keith Olbermann has written a lovely essay about Peter Jennings. Olbermann doesn't know Jennings, just watched his progress.

It's a gorgeous piece of writing....

Kerik Pulls Out

Fri Dec 10, 2004 at 07:37:02 PM PDT

{promoted from the diaries, and I'm Irish, btw-- kid o.}

Just seen on MSNBC: Bernard Kerik has withdrawn his name from consideration for Secretary of Homeland Security.

Lord knows his backstory was catching up to him. Guess there wasn't enough of a man date to cover for him. Steve Gilliard has covered a lot of the icky bidness Kerik has engaged in.

Actually, Kerik strikes me as a classic patronage-loving pol, akin to any Irish ward heeler back in the day.

KO's had it with Bev, y'all

Thu Dec 02, 2004 at 08:45:28 PM PDT

Hate to say I told ya so, but it looks like Bev Harris pushed Keith Olbermann a bit too far:

To Tin-Foil Hatties: Nice Move, Ex-Lax!

Wed Dec 01, 2004 at 10:00:33 PM PDT

So, you're all screaming about how anybody who asks for some solid evidence of voting fraud is a closet neo-con? That there's a "lockdown" of the "MSM" about voting irregularities, and Keith Olbermann is your soon-to-be concrete-shod knight in shining armor?

Well, congratulations, fuckers, you've about worn out his patience:

Breath, y'all: Kerry attys in Ohio

Thu Nov 11, 2004 at 03:32:50 AM PDT

All y'all who've been screaming about the Kerry campaign, relax. From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
Lawyers with John Kerry's presidential campaign are gathering information from Ohio election boards about uncounted ballots and other unresolved issues from last week's election.

Attorneys say they are not trying to challenge the election but are only carrying out Kerry's promise to make sure that all the votes in Ohio are counted. They describe this effort, which began this week, as a "fact-finding mission." ...

Dan Hoffheimer, the statewide counsel for the Kerry campaign, said the goal is to identify any voting problems to prevent them in the future - and quell doubts about the legitimacy of the Ohio election being raised on the Internet.

"We're not expecting to change the outcome of the election," Hoffheimer said. "We want to be sure that the public knows what really happened."

Happy News from Tennessee

Sun Oct 10, 2004 at 02:27:33 AM PDT

Just got back from Michael Moore's appearance here in The Music City.

It was sponsored by Music Row Democrats, and it was such a success that people were pounding on the windows after they had sold all their tickets. They had to open up another tier in the Gaylord Entertainment Center.

Real interesting Hardball on religion & politics NOW. Open thread?

Wed Sep 22, 2004 at 06:17:37 PM PDT

Sorry for one of these one-liners, but this topic is of interest to so many here.

Panel: Andrea Mitchell, Newsweek religion reporter (John Meacham?), Father Andrew Greeley, and [Somebody] Land from the Southern Baptist Convention.

Might as well use this as an open thread on this show.

Got held up at gunpoint

Wed Sep 01, 2004 at 10:37:31 PM PDT

I've lived in my formerly sketchy neighborhood for, oh, 13 years or so, and I've always walked down the street to the sto' on the corner for beer, cigarettes, and various sundries.

Tonight, a mere child (15 or so) rode up alongside me on a bike, cut me off and pulled a gun. Needless to say, he got my wallet.

Lucky for me, a neighbor was driving up the street at that moment, and I was able to flag him down. He drove me to the cop who was patrolling the 'hood.

I've filed the police report, cut off my bank cards, but what can I do to make sure none of my neighbors has to go through this?

I plan to talk to the guys at the store, since they love me, and will keep their eyes peeled, and will be dismayed to find that this punk was casing me in their parking lot, but what else?

I suppose I can:

  1. Contact my councilman.
  2. Get around to attending a neighborhood association meeting.
  3. Give a heads-up to all my neighbors.

Any other suggestions?

War movies tonight!

Sat May 15, 2004 at 07:46:15 PM PDT

They're doing Fred Zinneman tonight on TCM, and there are two incredible war-aftermath movies on, The Men and Act of Violence.

The Men is remarkable in that it was Marlon Brando's Hollywood debut, and it's about disability, and addresses prejudice against disabled people. Great performances by Brando and Teresa Wright, a wonderful actress.

Act of Violence is great and dark. It turns issues of morality on their ear. Robert Ryan and Van Heflin were POWs in the same German camp. Who did the right thing? Watching these two actors is always a treat.

But both movies speak to how our country treats its soldiers.

Oh, and Zinneman also directed Oklahoma! go figure. It's playing right now. It's worth seeing for Rod Steiger alone.

Hollywood take on Moore mishigas

Thu May 06, 2004 at 09:42:36 AM PDT

It popped into my head to see what my fave Hollywood writer, David Poland, had to say about the Farenheit 911 controversy. It was quite interesting:
...Moore finally started his inevitably endless whine with a reporter on Tuesday, though it is unclear in the article whether that interview was the genesis of the story. In a classic act of Moore-ish onanism, the Oscar-winning documentarian took $6 million from Miramax, making Fahrenheit 911 one of the most expensive documentaries ever made. After feasting on this capital from the "independent" division of a multinational, he brays to the Times, "At some point the question has to be asked, `Should this be happening in a free and open society where the monied interests essentially call the shots regarding the information that the public is allowed to see?"

Well, if ya don't want those "monied interests" to make decisions, Mike... Don't Take Their Friggin' Six Million Dollars!!!!! Adding to the pathetic nature of this scam, please be aware that Moore probably has $6 million himself and could have self-financed or sold select foreign markets to get enough money to get well within range of his production budget. What was his salary on this $6 million doc? And how much of the budget was based on the speed of completion of the film so that Moore could feel he might influence this year's election. Perhaps he feels the federal government should give him matching funds. ...

Cameron Crowe is our generation's Frank Capra

Sun Mar 07, 2004 at 05:27:54 AM PDT

He recognizes the cynicism, but he's all about the love.

I'm watching Jerry McGuire, and I'm recognizing the love, although I am loving the William, I am the William.

Discuss.

Aaron Brown reams Hastert

Fri Feb 27, 2004 at 12:29:37 AM PDT

Brown led his program tonight with what he termed "an outrage," the Speaker's refusal to grant an extension to the 9/11 commission.

He said none of the House leadership would agree to appear on the show, and said they were hoping that "you do not care."

He encouraged the audience to write, e-mail and call Hastert's office until he changes his mind, "for the victims, for the country, for history."

Brown started his job early on 9/11, and spent days broadcasting from atop a building in New York. It's personal.

Dirty Tricks! Kerry? Or...

Wed Feb 04, 2004 at 04:04:01 PM PDT

Hey, forgive me if anyone else has already come up with this, but all the dirty tricks are assumed by my fellow Dean supporters to be emanating from the Kerry camp.

Political Satire next week on TCM

My favorite cable station, Turner Classic Movies, is featuring satire this month, and this Tuesday's installment focuses on political satire. They're showing some real gems.
