An 11 year-old's take on the Democratic candidates
Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 11:10:27 PM PDT
With everyone bashing everyone else's candidates while tensely awaiting tomorrow's caucus, I thought it would be fun to share my 11 year-old's take on the election. This comes from a report she did for her current events class.

It looks like we won and the Ed Schultz Show will now be aired on Armed Forces Radio. I just received the following email:
Maya Keyes' Friend Dies
Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 06:33:08 PM PDT
Many at Kos have been following the saga of Maya Keyes, daughter of Alan Keyes, who got kicked out of her parent's life for being gay and an activist. Maya has a friend, Shymmer (Jefry Silva), who was also kicked out of his home for being gay. Shymmer died today. I'm not sure what the Kos community can do, but kids like this usually die in complete anonymity. I'd love it if the liberal community could show their support. Maya's blog is

Liberals must fight conservative Islam
Wed Dec 15, 2004 at 02:54:03 PM PDT
Conservative Republicans have too much in common with conservative Islamics to really fight the battle that must be fought. When Bush takes on Islamic fundamentalists it looks like Christianity versus Islam, the new crusade.
But don't let your hatred for Bush lead you to believe conservative Islam is ok, or just another culture we should leave alone. Check out this article at The Independent, "Mentally-ill girl who was sold for sex faces death penalty in Iran"
PNAC thinks we should take on China next
Tue Nov 09, 2004 at 04:50:49 PM PDT
It seems our friends over at
PNAC and
AEI, those fine folks that brought you the Iraq war, find the recent election a complete vindication of their policies. So what's next? Surely we need to get rid of the evil Iranian and North Korean governments, of course, but those are small fry. We need to put some meat behind the Bush Doctrine. Time to take on something a little more interesting, don't you think? Something that actually might be a bit of a challenge. That's right, there are over a billion pinko commies that must be liberated over in China! No more Mr. Nice guy America anymore! Down with Panda huggers!
Our Democratic Values
Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 02:00:23 PM PDT
Once upon a time liberals were always talking about values (remember those "bleeding hearts"?) and conservatives claimed to be the practical ones. Somewhere along the line conservatives started talking more and more about values and liberals have just conceded the debate. Now Republicans claim the high moral ground and Democrats are left claiming "me too". That's a problem. We need to reclaim the high ground.
Many claim Democrats need to learn religion, become more Christian. Others say we need to reclaim patriotism or a candidate with a southern accent. Personally, I don't think the details matter, each individual needs to be true to himself (or herself), but we must understand our fundamental values and articulate them loudly and often.
So what are the base Democratic values? I've seen many lists lately, most far too long and detailed. This lists quickly devolve into policy statements and tend to be materialistic in nature. But what are our values? For myself, I see three base values, two moral and one philosophical:
Postal workers denied vote?
Mon Nov 01, 2004 at 12:25:16 PM PDT
From the Clark blog:
Just heard something strange from the postal carrier who serves our office building (in a college town, in Michigan). He said that at a meeting first thing this morning all the postal workers at his facility got told that it's mandatory that they work from 6 AM to 6 PM tomorrow, Election Day - no reason given. He was upset that by the time he leaves work he will barely have time to make it to his hometown to vote. Is this happening across the USPS? Just in battleground states? Or is it just a very local thing? Work a 12 hour shift on Election Day, with less than 24 hours notice! What's going on here?
Has anyone else heard of this? I'm fairly certain this is illegal.
Oregonian reports another ammo site unguarded
Fri Oct 29, 2004 at 08:31:14 AM PDT
Six months after the fall of Baghdad, a vast Iraqi weapons depot with tens of thousands of artillery rounds and other explosives remained unguarded, according to two U.S. aid workers who say they reported looting of the site to U.S. military officials.
The aid workers say they informed Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, the highest ranking Army officer in Iraq in October 2003 but were told that the United States did not have enough troops to seal off the facility, which included more than 60 bunkers packed with munitions.
"We were outraged," said Wes Hare, city manager of La Grande, who was working in Iraq as part of a rebuilding program. A colleague who also visited the depot, Jerry Kuhaida, said it appeared that the explosives at the Ukhaider Ammunition Storage Area had found their way to insurgents targeting U.S. forces.
"There's no question in my mind that the stuff in Ukhaider was used by terrorists," said Kuhaida.
