Convince Me on Universal Health Care

Fri Jun 10, 2005 at 10:40:53 PM PDT

I used to think that health care was an obvious area for market solutions. People know what money they have, and can make decisions on the value of their own life and quality thereof, so let the market sort it out.

But lately, problems with our health care system seem to be bubbling up in all sorts of unusual places. Bankruptcy legislation, the issues GM claims to have, even the Schiavo case -- these all indicate that something is going wrong at a deeper level with how we deal with medical expenses. Symptoms, as it were, of something intrinsically wrong with our (mostly) market-based  setup.

So I'm now officially on the bubble when it comes to health care. Take your best shot, and try to convince me that universal health care is the best thing for me, for my country, and for everyone in the United States of America.
