Foster Kids = AIDS Guinea Pigs?

Tue May 03, 2005 at 05:10:59 PM PDT

Just up on E&P:

The Associated Press will report on Wednesday, after more than four months of research on the use of foster children in AIDS experiments, that most of the children never got the benefit of a basic protection afforded by federal law and required by some states -- an independent advocate to monitor their care, their side effects and their wishes as they moved between homes or facilities.

Score another round for the "culture of life," eh?

Spreading Sanity: Citizen Journalism to the Fore

Sat Apr 30, 2005 at 07:59:30 AM PDT

It appears we sane and unbought human beings have gained a partner in the fight to take the reigns of public discourse out of the hands of mercenary spokesmodels, intellectual frauds, and corporate whores. Kudos to The Rocky Mountain News for embracing blogging culture, everyday activists, and the empowering trend toward citizen journalists.

Soft Core Bigotry?

Why Republicans love Civil Rights Activists

[insert a bit of pseudo intellectual tripe here]

It is a fact that white men's wages have fallen as a direct result of the entry of more and more blacks into the labor market. To the extent that the Democrats are seen as the party of minorities and civil rights activists, they lose votes not only from the Religious Right, but also from the broad masses of white men who perceive themselves to be at a competitive disadvantage with blacks.

Uncomfortable yet? There's more.

Who better?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Jimmy Carter will lead a bipartisan commission to examine problems with the U.S. election system, American University's Center for Democracy and Election Management said on Thursday.

Culture War: Sermon from the Front Lines

Wed Mar 23, 2005 at 02:19:30 PM PDT

The culture of life marches along a righteous path. The culture of life protects those who are not conscious, self-aware, or able to protect themselves. In short, the culture of life celebrates the sanctity of the previously alive equally alongside that of the prospectively alive. Fully living people capable of independent thought are dangerous. They are not to be safeguarded, they are to be carefully guided. They are to be controlled.

Here's how...

Suddenly, Bird Flu doesn't sound so bad...

Tue Mar 08, 2005 at 06:08:44 AM PDT

The fear of bird flu learning to jump from human to human has a partner, now - meet the dangerous man-made flu virus that's turned up in Korean pigs.

According to Wired,

The presence of a man-made human flu virus in pigs may be worrisome for several reasons. First, a man-made virus has no business in pigs -- did the virus get there naturally, or was it a lab accident? More frighteningly, but less likely, was it bioterrorism? Second, viruses often use pigs as a conduit to humans, who would have little or no immune resistance to this particular strain of flu since no one has been exposed to it.

A Eulogy

Tue Feb 15, 2005 at 08:03:26 PM PDT

On January 5th, my dad died of lung cancer at age 56. He was uninsured, and he and my mom had to declare bankruptcy the year before when their business folded after 20 some odd years. They got rid of the very few assets they had that disqualified them for medicaid coverage and jumped through every hoop, but they still haven't been approved and the hospital's writing Mom threatening letters to collect their 40 grand or so.

Still, it's not all as bad as it sounds. Read on for some snark, some inspiration, even a bizarre plot twist. Dad wouldn't have it any other way.

Abortion's Beside the Point

Tue Nov 09, 2004 at 09:18:23 AM PDT

The abortion debate is a massive red herring and we've fallen for it on an epic scale. The real issue has nothing whatever to do with abortion except as a means to an end for the opposition. We need to keep the end in sight to reframe the debate by uncovering the truth the conservatives are hiding behind their "pro-life" banners.

Job 1 is to quit shadow-boxing and name what we're really fighting against.
