Framing: Are the Republicans admitting that they're irresponsible?

Wed Apr 04, 2007 at 12:07:44 PM PDT

Republicans are telling us that, for Congress to cut funding for the troops is to put the troops in harm's way.  Yet, as Senator Feingold frequently notes, Republicans had no problem defunding the war in Somalia in the '90's.

What does this mean, and what are they implying here?

we elected Howard Dean in VA, and MT, and RI...YEEEAAARRRGHH!!!

Sat Nov 11, 2006 at 12:30:03 PM PDT

"At every turn when there has been an imbalance of power, the truth questioned, or our beliefs and values distorted, the change required to restore our nation has always come from the bottom up from our people."
-- Howard Dean

The myopia of James Carville's impotent ranting over Chairman Dean is obvious enough from the netroots standpoint, as we are all well-acquainted with his contributions to the state party coffers and organization, as well as the 50-state strategy, that "take the fight to the Republicans" mentality.  But Dean's victory is far more complete than that, far more than everyone else realizes.

Follow me below the fold to take a look at some "funny" similarities...

IN-02: my first time at the Joe Donnelly HQ

Mon Oct 09, 2006 at 08:30:40 PM PDT

[cross-posted at 'Round the Bend: an IN-02 blog]

Today I was invited to attend a brief pep talk at the Joe Donnelly for Congress HQ in South Bend.  I have to say, it was a truly eye-opening experience.  This is the first campaign I've ever helped with, and I was picturing something a little, well, glitzier.  Ya know, like on TV where it's a well-lit, many-windowed giant room with new furniture and important looking people in expensive sweaters spitting out approval ratings and precinct numbers and complicated campaign strategies.

Even if that wasn't what I was necessarily expecting, it's closer to what I was picturing when I parked at the plain-looking, stucco building in downtown South Bend covered in Joe Donnelly for Congress lawn signs.  What I found was far from it.

And I'm very happy about it.

IN-02: I'm starting a pro-Donnelly blog (with poll!)

Tue Aug 29, 2006 at 07:27:51 PM PDT

Ok, here's the thing: as far as I can tell, there is no blog dedicated to the race in IN-02.  Yes, there are blogs dedicated to Indiana politics and some are quite good, but this is one of three very important races in the Hoosier State, and I think it merits its own forum.  And quite frankly, Donnelly needs all the help he can get, as he's vastly outfunded by millionaire Chris Chocola and all his special interest group allies.

IN-02: Chocola's mendacious new attack ad

Wed Aug 23, 2006 at 04:14:45 PM PDT

I just saw yet another new Chocola ad, this one countering the DNC's attack on Chocola's support for the Federal Energy Bill of 2005. Of course, it's one long exercise in bs, from referring to the DNC as "Donnelly's liberal allies" (meant to insinuate the intrusion of 527's and interest groups into the fight-- in fact, Chocola seems to have more of those on his side, including the US Chamber of Commerce and the American Healthcare Association and Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care that funded the disinformation ad on Medicare Plan D) to cynically referring to the bill as "the ethanol bill."

Because, ya know, it was all about ethanol, and the $5 billion in takeaways to the oil and gas companies that contributed so much to Chocola's reelection fund was just a minor detail!

News flash for TNR: Ann is not joking

Digby has a great post up today about Ann the Knife and her apologist in the New Republic (is this what "moderation" is now, defending Ann Coulter?  Stop the ride, I wanna get off).  I've wanted to write about Coulter a number of times, but I've tended to refrain b/c I really don't wanna give her any more publicity.  But I'm all for joining the rest of the blogosphere in talking Elspeth Reeve back from the brink.

the battle for better healthcare: Wal-Mart 1, workers 0

Thu Jul 20, 2006 at 01:40:26 PM PDT

In a huge victory for workers and public health, Maryland recently adopted a law stating that all private companies employing more than 10,000 workers (that is, Wal-Mart) have to spend 8 percent of their payroll on health care.  If they don't, they must make up the difference in taxes.  The law is backed not only by a majority of Maryland lawbreakers, but 77% of the state population as well.

Unfortunately, yesterday that law was overturned.

losing the battle against cognitive dissonance: a rant vs. the right

cross-posted at Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

The conservative wankfest against the Times' "exposure" of the government's snooping into our financial records is truly bizarre considering that W himself bragged about "following the terrorists' money" years ago.  It seems to me that, at this point, all El Presidente has left supporting him are the real hardcore Bushites, the people whom he couldn't get to stop supporting him if he armed a roadside bomb while screwing a yak on national TV (as long as it's not a gay yak).  And an underlying reason for the bank-record tantrum is simply that every day it's gets harder and harder to be such a person.

The Bush Speech Drinking Game (war plan edition)

Wed Nov 30, 2005 at 12:00:04 AM PDT

In preparation for the speech on the Administration's plan for victory (version 4.0), I suggest a drinking game befitting the moment.  Quite frankly, I have to be a little tooted to watch W without my blood boiling (as I imagine is the case with many of us), so we might as well make it fun!

This is a collaborative game, so please feel free to contribute your own ideas.

Rules on the flip.

Ethics Committee Purged of Integrity

Thu Feb 03, 2005 at 10:37:05 AM PDT

I supposed we should all have seen it coming.

article here

House Republican leaders tightened their control over the ethics committee yesterday by ousting its independent-minded chairman, appointing a replacement who is close to them and adding two new members who donated to the legal defense fund of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.).
