MI-Primary: The Uncommitted Option

Thu Jan 10, 2008 at 03:59:23 PM PDT

From CNN:

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Democratic leaders in Michigan are urging supporters of John Edwards and Barack Obama, who are not on the ballot in the state, to vote "uncommitted" in the January 15 primary – a move that could create an unexpected headache for Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Intriguing.

Bush to capitulate on SCHIP?

Sat Oct 06, 2007 at 11:49:44 AM PDT

From CNN:

President Bush signaled a willingness Saturday to spend more than what he had recommended for a popular children's health program, but provided no specifics on how much higher he would go.

The president on Wednesday vetoed legislation that would increase spending for the State Children's Health Insurance Program by $35 billion over five years. Bush has called for a $5 billion increase. Several Republicans in both chambers have sided with Democratic lawmakers on the issue.

"If putting poor children first takes a little more than the 20 percent increase I have proposed in my budget for SCHIP, I am willing to work with leaders in Congress to find the additional money," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

It's NOT about the war! It's about the Iraqi government!

Thu Sep 20, 2007 at 04:12:03 PM PDT

I'm pissed.

I'm watching the news, reading blogs, checking out media reports, and all of them focus on one thing when it comes to Iraq.

The war.

The war is over.  We won the military action a long time ago, and while insurgent attacks are great for headlines, and are deplorable for the casualties they cause, they are absolutely irrelevant.

The problem with Iraq is that the Iraqi government is not taking advantage of our troops being there to actually work on reconciliation and creating a working, permanent government to turn Iraq into a stable country.

The GOP base-breaking argument for abortion: Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

Thu Jan 26, 2006 at 12:35:43 PM PDT

The argument over abortion is a divisive one.  As strong as our moral arguments are, the thought of snuffing out a life (possibly) is often too strong for social conservatives to overcome.

However, the fiscal conservatives tend to lean on this topic.  For these folks, I've run across an argument that has at least gotten them to seriously consider their stance on abortion.

The argument is this:  The founding fathers would have supported it.

Giving Thanks

Wed Nov 23, 2005 at 10:48:27 PM PDT

It's that time of year again.  It's time for us in the US to remember all the blessings that we've been given over our lives.

I don't know about you all, but there are many things I'm thankful for.

Patriotism, Progressives, and Old Glory

Mon Sep 19, 2005 at 09:12:37 PM PDT

There's been something that's been getting my goat lately. I see it all the time on message boards, in the media, TV, everywhere.  What is it?

The U.S. flag.  Hijacked by Republicans.

That, dear readers, needs to change.

Bush uses Katrina to advance neocon agenda: Calls for spending cuts!

Fri Sep 16, 2005 at 05:32:18 PM PDT

From CNN/Money:

Speaking at the White House Friday afternoon, Bush said that although rebuilding the Gulf Coast would be expensive, he was "confident we can handle it and our other priorities." He said the government will "have to cut unnecessary spending" and should not raise taxes.

He declined to give an estimate for how much the rebuilding would cost or suggest where the money might come from.

One again, the Bush Administration prefers to put party ideology over the welfare of the country.  You think he would have learned his lesson about cutting spending to pay for something else when he cut the Army Corps of Engineers levee funding, but noooooooooo...

So where exactly do you plan to get the money to pay for this, Mr. Bush?

"We were sold for bounties," say Gitmo detainees

Wed Jun 01, 2005 at 12:23:37 AM PDT

From AP via AOL News

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (May 31) - They fed them well. The Pakistani tribesmen slaughtered a sheep in honor of their guests, Arabs and Chinese Muslims famished from fleeing U.S. bombing in the Afghan mountains. But their hosts had ulterior motives: to sell them to the Americans, said the men who are now prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

Bounties ranged from $3,000 to $25,000, the detainees testified during military tribunals, according to transcripts the U.S. government gave The Associated Press to comply with a Freedom of Information lawsuit.

Whiskey.  Tango.  Foxtrot.  Over.

ACTION ALERT: Call for Bush, Cheney, and crew to take reponsibility!

Tue May 31, 2005 at 10:39:24 AM PDT

From CNN:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush called a human rights report "absurd" for criticizing the United States' detention of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and said Tuesday the allegations were made by "people who hate America."

"It's absurd. It's an absurd allegation. The United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world," Bush said of the Amnesty International report that compared Guantanamo to a Soviet-era gulag.

Cheney offended by REPORTING of abuse? Here's what I'm offended by...

Mon May 30, 2005 at 04:11:31 PM PDT

From CNN:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he was offended by Amnesty International's condemnation of the United States for what it called "serious human rights violations" at Guantanamo Bay.

"For Amnesty International to suggest that somehow the United States is a violator of human rights, I frankly just don't take them seriously," he said in an interview that was to air Monday night on CNN's "Larry King Live."

Like this sanctimonious partisan hack of a politician has any right to be offended.

Metrospy T-Shirts...why are the neo-cons advertising here?

Sun Apr 24, 2005 at 04:32:39 PM PDT

The top entry of the "classifieds" section of the ads is for Metrospy T-Shirts, a company that makes shirts with neo-con slogans on them...

Hell, their very ad goes against the values we espouse on this site...

Conservative T-Shirts for Yer Mamma!
METROSPY T-SHIRTS: Animals do not have rights. The ones that taste good should be eaten. The ones that are friendly should be kept as pets and the others, such as spiders and ants should be killed. We don't have a problem with gays. They should have all the same rights as heterosexual men. They should be allowed to marry the woman of their choice. Is there something that can be done so that these people aren't getting publicity from readers of this site?

US 'either silent or complicit' in Saddam's Oil Smuggling...

Thu Feb 03, 2005 at 05:19:08 AM PDT

Anyhow, I was doing my early morning insomniac scanning of CNN's website for news, and came across this little nugget of an article.

(CNN) -- Documents obtained by CNN reveal the United States knew about, and even condoned, embargo-breaking oil sales by Saddam Hussein's regime, and did so to shore up alliances with Iraq's neighbors.

The oil trade with countries such as Turkey and Jordan appears to have been an open secret inside the U.S. government and the United Nations for years.

The unclassified State Department documents sent to congressional committees with oversight of U.S. foreign policy divulge that the United States deemed such sales to be in the "national interest," even though they generated billions of dollars in unmonitored revenue for Saddam's regime.

Bush Admin cutting Pell Grants...wasn't he supposed to increase them?

Thu Dec 23, 2004 at 03:11:24 AM PDT

Now, I may be addlebrained, and in fact, some of my conservative friends have, in fact, told me that I am.

However, I distinctly remember Bush saying during the debates that he wanted to INCREASE the availability of Pell Grants, not decrease them.

Well, that was a lie.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/12/23/pell.grants/index.html

A change in eligibility for Pell Grants to be announced Thursday by the Department of Education would cut some 90,000 students from the rolls of recipients and affect more than 1 million others, an education advocate says.

Genetically Modified Food...we need laws on this stuff.

Wed Dec 01, 2004 at 09:40:31 AM PDT

This worries me...so I wrote an essay about it.  Thoughts are welcome.  I seriously believe that we need to press our Congresspeople on this matter. We need some type of legislation to protect our farmers, our food supply, and our species affected by the rapid growth of this industry with a lack of research on it's effects.
