Musharraf refusing to step down.

Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 07:24:17 AM PDT

From AP at MSNBC:

President Pervez Musharraf will not step down as head of state and intends to serve out his five-year-term, his spokesman says, despite a sweeping election victory by his opponents — some of whom want to drive him from power.

His justification?

GOV ADMITS TORTURE--While we vote

Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 12:53:58 PM PDT

What better time to admit torture than during the most intense Super Duper Tuesday I can remember?

CIA Director Michael Hayden publicly confirmed for the first time the names of three suspected al-Qaida terrorists who were subjected to a particularly harsh interrogation technique known as waterboarding, and why.

US Mock Disaster-Bloggers are the threat

Fri Feb 01, 2008 at 09:19:35 AM PDT

Almost two years ago, the AP requested records on Cyber Storm under the Freedom of Information Act. Recently they received a heavily redacted version which is analyzed in the Daily Herald

Those incidents were among dozens of detailed, mock disasters confronting officials rapid-fire in the U.S. government's biggest-ever "Cyber Storm" war game, according to hundreds of pages of heavily censored files obtained by The Associated Press. The Homeland Security Department ran the exercise to test the nation's hacker defenses, with help from the State Department, Pentagon, Justice Department, CIA, National Security Agency and others.

Broward D001 Florida -- 109% voter turnout!

Wed Jan 30, 2008 at 07:53:19 AM PDT

I'm not the C.T. type but a really odd thing happened yesterday in Florida.  Broward county district D001 had a huge voter turnout.  In fact, almost 110% of the voters voted.

Hopefully everyone is sporting that beautiful orange today.  We do it to protest the holding/treatment of prisoners at Gitmo.

Patriotic Telecoms

Thu Jan 10, 2008 at 10:10:29 AM PDT

We've been hearing from Bush at least since October--Congress must listen to him to keep America safe:

Today the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees are considering a proposed bill that instead of making the Protect America Act permanent would take us backward

He goes on to make sure we know that:

Keeping this authority is critical to keeping America safe

And that those patriotic telecoms were acting in America's best interest:

And it must grant liability protection to companies who are facing multi-billion-dollar lawsuits only because they are believed to have assisted in the efforts to defend our nation following the 9/11 attacks.

So what do we find out today?

My Uncomfortable Experience in a Public Mens Room

Two weeks ago, the kids and I went on a trip to visit friends in San Antonio, Texas.  On the way we stopped at a rest area just off the interstate.  What happened next made me very uneasy...

Every day we are faced with choices.  Sometimes we choose wisely, sometimes not.  Either way, our decisions should be based on logic.  For instance:

Don't be fooled, you are NOT Anonymous

Wed Jun 14, 2006 at 09:35:41 AM PDT

Lately there has been discussion on Kos about anonymity and how we should at all time respect bloggers inherent desire to be anonymous. We have read about the disgraceful way that Armando was 'outed' and have even been given tips on how to remain anonymous. The tips by bluerevolt make a lot of sense and should be followed but I have news for you, you are NOT anonymous.
No matter where you post, how many email addresses you set up, or proxies you go through, you can and are able to be tracked.

Solomon, Blackmail, War on Reporters

Thu Jun 01, 2006 at 12:46:31 PM PDT

John Solomon, of the AP, has been writing some pretty misleading reports lately. The latest makes it seem like Reid is admitting he did something unethical.

Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo has covered it pretty extensively, but one question keeps coming up.  What the fuck is up with the AP and John Solomon in particular?

I think the interview he did in 2003 might clear up some things:
1.  He was being 'spied' on before 9/11
2.  The Justice Department was after his sources.
3.  The Justice Department was trying to prevent him from writing an article that was critical of the Administration.
4.  The Justice Department was leaking private information to individuals trying to entice them to go public with information to discredit him.
5.  This Administration has believed themselves above the law from the beginning.

If you stand still, you WILL get shot at

The AP put out a story this weekend that sheds some light on what is going on in Iraq, at least in Ramadi. This is the Iraq where things are going great. The Iraq where the 'biased' media can't get it straight. The Iraq were 'traitor' generals don't know what the fuck they are talking about. Blockquotes from the story, emphasis mine.
Weapons locked, loaded and ready, a U.S. Marine platoon runs through this troubled Iraqi city's war-wrecked streets, hurling yellow, gray and violet smoke grenades to shroud their path.
Sounds like some fierce new offensive into enemy territory.
Pausing only to train gun barrels around corners or scan rooftops for insurgents, they bound across desolate roads lined with broken glass and charred cars -- and start running again.

Going to bust into some terrorist hideout and capture the number two Al-Queda? Is that why the Marines are running?
