Toxic Disaster Threatens CO Town

Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 08:22:28 AM PDT

A potential dam breach that has been likened to the 1976 Teton Dam disaster is threatening the town of Leadville Co. and communities downstream the Denver Post reported yesterday.

More than 1 billion gallons of water—enough to fill 1,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools—is backed up in abandoned mine shafts and a drainage tunnel in the mountains above Leadville, and officials worry it could blow out and cascade through the historic town when the heavy snowpack melts.

A partial collapse of the 2.1-mile tunnel created the pooling of water. The tunnel normally drains water that seeps into some of the hundreds of abandoned mine shafts and other mine workings in the mountains north of Leadville and deposits it into the East Fork of the Arkansas River about a mile north of town.

250 Kossacks Endorse Right Wing Columnist Shailagh Murray

Sun Jan 27, 2008 at 06:29:34 PM PDT

OK  I can't believe this. But a highly recommended diary on Kos is based on a blogpost by right wing WaPo columnist Shalaigh Murray and not one commenter notices this? The post received 250 tips for heaven's sake.

I am not saying whether the assertion that Kennedy "expressed those frustrations directly to the campaign but was reportedly infuriated when Bill Clinton yesterday compared Obama's South Carolina victory to Jesse Jackson winning the state's much smaller caucuses in 1984 and 1988" is true or not. But I do question the source and that a "Control f" search of the comments received zero hits on Murray.

Come on people. We are better than that. Posters, find and cite reputable sources, not wingnuts. Commenters, keep the posters honest, no matter how you feel about the subject matter or which candidate you endorse.

Bush dismissed 91 US attorneys in 2001

Thu Mar 15, 2007 at 05:31:55 PM PDT

Please let me know if this has been posted before and I will delete.

OK I've been listening to Ed Schultz roll over for right wing propaganda in the last 20 minutes of his program and listening the news reports repeating the right wings claim that "Clinton fired 93 attorneys"

By now, we all know the US attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president and that it is traditional for a president to appoint new US Attorneys at the beginning of the term. But no one is mentioning Bush's dismissals.

It took me about 3 minutes to find this announcement by the administration in 2001.

In difficult times, brave men stand up to the powerful in order to make difficult decisions.

Greer -- a conservative Christian and longtime Republican ....But despite the mounting pressure, he has been steadfast in his rulings that Terri Schiavo is in a persistent vegetative state and did not want to be kept alive artificially.

"There are very few people who have shown the will to stand up to raw power," said Stetson University Law Professor Michael Allen, who has studied the Schiavo case. "He's one."

Take Ollie's Challenge

Thu Dec 16, 2004 at 09:14:14 PM PDT

Its practically a guarantee that you'll get this story in an email from your right wing friends. So I thought I'd post this response.

In a column today Ollie North accuses the "media elites" of ignoring the story of a heroic Marine who died in Iraq in favor of the story of a sailor who refused to deploy.

Most readers of this column probably haven't heard about Rafael Peralta. With the exception of the Los Angeles Times, most of our mainstream media haven't bothered to write about him. The next time you log onto the Internet, do a Google search on Rafael Peralta. As of this writing, the Internet's most used search engine will provide you with only 26 citations from news sources that have bothered to write about this heroic young man. Then, just for giggles, do a Google search on Pablo Paredes. Hundreds of media outlets have written about him. The wire services have blasted his story to thousands of newspapers. Television and radio debate programs gladly provide the public with talking heads that can speak eloquently on the actions of Pablo Paredes.

CO - RNC Chair Gillespie woefully ignorant of campaign laws

Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 05:03:07 PM PDT

Just saw Ed Gillespie on Capitol Report claiming that fictitious people (like Mary Poppins) would be allowed to vote in Colorado. Unfortunately he's unaware of a Republican sponsored Colorado State Law that requires a voter to show an ID at his/her polling place prior to voting.

Such a liar. So out of touch.

But it serves as a good reminder to Colorado voters

Bring an ID OR Vote Early

Bring ID
to the polling place:

If you want to be insured that your vote counts on November 2, 2004; don't forget to bring one of the following forms of ID with you to your polling place:

    * Colorado 's driver license;
    * Medicare/Medicaid card;
    * A utility bill that shows your name and address;
    * A military or other government issued ID

Hey GW ! You haven't done nothing!

Wow 30 years ago and these lyrics that Stevie Wonder wrote about Nixon ring true today.

We would not care to wake up to the nightmare
That's becoming real life
But when mislead who knows a person's mind
Can turn as cold as ice...

Today the words are still powerful, if not prophetic.

Brooks Gets It Right!!!

Sat Jul 24, 2004 at 08:39:34 AM PDT

Holy Crap!!! Somebody check the temperature in Hades. Though he avoids saying that Iraq was a mistake. Brooksie gets it right!!

In today's NY Times column.Brooksie tells it like it is.

...When you see that our enemies are primarily an intellectual movement, not a terrorist army, you see why they are in no hurry. With their extensive indoctrination infrastructure of madrassas and mosques, they're still building strength, laying the groundwork for decades of struggle. Their time horizon can be totally different from our own.

As an ideological movement rather than a national or military one, they can play by different rules. There is no territory they must protect. They never have to win a battle but can instead profit in the realm of public opinion from the glorious martyrdom entailed in their defeats. We think the struggle is fought on the ground, but they know the struggle is really fought on satellite TV, and they are far more sophisticated than we are in using it. ...

Now if he'll only come out and say what those who were against the Iraq adventure have been saying. That after invading Afghanistan, the US should have gone after AQ and mounted an ideological campaign to win the hearts and minds of Muslim moderates rather than alienating them.

Except for what I take to be an unwarranted swipe at Juan Cole. I agree with what Brooksie says.

Hitchens gets B*slapped

Tue Jun 29, 2004 at 07:22:22 AM PDT

I've been waiting for a reply from Michael Moore's war room regarding the noxious article from Chris Hitchens. In absence of a counterattack from the Moore camp, check out this excellent retort from Chris Parry in www.hollywoodbitchslap.com

Shorter Ed Koch

Mon Jun 28, 2004 at 05:32:08 PM PDT

MOOOMMMMMEEEE!!!!!  make the bad, bad liberals stop fighting back!! WWAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Aside from his calling David Brooks brilliant (is this a satire?), my favorite Koch line is..."That's what you radicals on the left always do. You don't debate issues, you denigrate your opponents."

Uh, Eddie baby.... got some flashes for you. Do the names Richard Clarke, Paul O'Neill, Joseph Wilson, Michael Moore, Howard Dean, George Soros, .... mean anything to you? Or are you saying the the people who denigated them are "radicals on the left"?

Disgusting

Sat Jun 26, 2004 at 08:46:45 AM PDT

Just saw the "Faces of John Kerry" ad.   Disgusting.

Without comment here's what the American Jewish Congress said about the Moveon submissions. Update [2004-6-26 13:9:0 by GP]:Update: My point is that the Faces of John Kerry" ad is FEATURED on the Bush website and the AJC response was FEATURED on the WSJ Op Ed page while the Move On submissons were 2 out of over 1000. I'll bet a Reagan $10 bill that there won't be a similar outrage at AJC or WSJ about Bush interspersing images of Hitler with Kerry, Gore and Dean. Don't believe me? Note that Drudge hasn't picked up on it.

The AMT -and Bush's Non Tax Cut for the Middle Class

Sun Feb 29, 2004 at 11:20:32 AM PDT

"What I think is asininely stupid is that you have a system that gives with one hand and takes back with the other," said W. Val Oveson, who was the national taxpayer advocate at the Internal Revenue Service from 1998 to 2000.

The next time David Brooks or some other administration apologist tries to tell you that your candidate wants to "raise taxes on the middle class". Please tell them that the Bush/Repub "tax cuts" did nothing to change the AMT (and here).

A shout out to Kos alum Steve Gilliard

Andrea Mitchell on Imus - US Media Guilty Of Jingosim

Sun Jan 11, 2004 at 09:07:40 PM PDT

jingoism <from www.dictionary.com>

n 1: an appeal intended to arouse patriotic emotions [syn: flag waving] 2: fanatical patriotism [syn: chauvinism

I am surprised that Ms. Mitchell's startling admission on last Friday's Imus in the Morning that the US media was guilty of "jingoism" in the run up to the Iraqi war hasn't gotten bigger play in the media and blogosphere.

What was less surprising was Imus's response. The response of an ex Marine who presumably would identify with our soldiers dying in Iraq.

His response?      Look! Hillary Clinton!
