I'm from the Southwest and currently live in East Aztlan. Like most Manitos, I can construct a reasonable claim to being part of "los primeros pobladores de Nuevo Mejico." I'm a "local" out there, i.e., I'm a mestizo with indigenous and European roots. In East Aztlan, I'm an outsider, despite my score of years paying taxes in these parts.  The borderland outlook, unlike that found in the East, is rooted a tad more in terms of who you are as a person instead of measuring you by your class origins; the former IMO is derived from a non-Eurocentric sense of self.
