NOW Endorses Ned Lamont as US Senator from CT

Tue May 16, 2006 at 10:24:16 AM PDT

I am a member of Connecticut NOW, the National Organization for Women, and I am happy to report the group has decided to back Ned Lamont in his run to unseat Joe Lieberman. I feel Ned has a lot more to offer the women of this state in terms of fighting for our rights and freedoms. Joe Lieberman has been a DINO for so long now, I doubt he even knows what issues a true democrat should be fighting for today.

Alabama AG Candidate Denies Holocaust Happened

Sat May 13, 2006 at 05:12:36 AM PDT

Well this is disturbing. I naively didn't realize that people on the campaign trail today would actually own up to being so ignorant.

From AP:
http://www.phillyburbs.com/...

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A Democratic candidate for Alabama attorney general denies the Holocaust occurred and said Friday he will speak this weekend in New Jersey to a "pro-white" organization that is widely viewed as being racist.

Larry Darby concedes his views are radical, but he said they should help him win wide support among Alabama voters as he tries to "reawaken white racial awareness" with his campaign against Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson.

The state Democratic chairman, Joe Turnham, said the party became aware of some of Darby's views only days ago and was considering what to do about his candidacy.

Dems Vow Not to Give Up Hopelessness (snark alert)

Thu Mar 02, 2006 at 05:44:25 AM PDT

Unfortunately, this sounds like it could actually be true. From The Onion:

WASHINGTON, DC--In a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Monday, Congressional Democrats announced that, despite the scandals plaguing the Republican Party and widespread calls for change in Washington, their party will remain true to its hopeless direction.

"We are entirely capable of bungling this opportunity to regain control of the House and Senate and the trust of the American people," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said to scattered applause. "It will take some doing, but we're in this for the long and pointless haul."

CT-NOW Calls SD Abortion Ban 'Misogyny Enshrined in Law'

Wed Mar 01, 2006 at 05:36:53 AM PDT

"South Dakota should have a warning sign at its borders reading `Women Beware, Your Rights Are Denied Here,'" said Kathleen Sloan, Executive Director of Connecticut NOW, in response to that state's recent passage of a law banning most all abortions there.  South Dakota lawmakers have issued a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade by passing this law which even denies abortions to women who are victims of the violent crime of rape and/or incest.  "This is misogyny enshrined in law", continued Sloan.  "If you would force a woman who has been raped or is a victim of incest to give birth under those circumstances, you cannot respect or value women or recognize that they have any inherent rights."

Politics is turning my rightwing dad against me. Advice?

Sun Jan 08, 2006 at 01:46:23 PM PDT

My dad, who is a stereotypical Nascar-loving, liberal-hating, rightwing nutjob, hasn't said a civil word to me since Thanksgiving. He is upset with me that I am becoming more involved in "liberal causes." He is furious that I joined the National Organization for Women, that I sign petitions against Alito, that I made phone calls for Kerry last year, that I am advocating for stem cell research, etc. It's all bubbling over all of a sudden, and the holidays were the tipping point.

NY Times--Iraqi Prisons Must Meet US Standards

Sun Dec 25, 2005 at 02:43:26 AM PDT

The commander of American-run prisons in Iraq says the military will not turn over any detainees or detention centers to Iraqi jailers until American officials are satisfied that the Iraqis are meeting United States standards for the care and custody of detainees.

"Bottom line, we will not pass on facilities or detainees until they meet the standards we define and that we are using today," the commander, Maj. Gen. John D. Gardner of the Army, said in a telephone interview this week from Iraq.

The comments by General Gardner come in the aftermath of two recent raids of Iraqi government detention centers that uncovered scores of abused prisoners. They also follow calls by American officials for the Iraqi government to bar militias from dominating the security forces. American military experts have joined Iraqi officials in inspecting Iraqi detention centers.

I'm a New N.O.W. Leader -- Got Advice For Me?

Fri Nov 25, 2005 at 12:21:46 PM PDT

I'm taking the reins of a new chapter of the National Organization for Women. I know there have been some heated discussions about how NOW has chosen to tackle some tough issues, and about who the organization endorses, so I'm asking for advice on  what I should be focusing on and how I should go about accomplishing something tangible and helpful. I realize as the leader of a chapter I won't, at least at first, be in a position to dictate national themes. But if you could influence NOW on a local level, what would you advocate? TIA for any help.

HuffPost: Fitzgerald Threw a Softball

Sat Oct 29, 2005 at 03:53:37 PM PDT

I was none too happy to read this  at HuffPost. Anyone think this Sheldon Drobny is worth worrying about?

Besides my co-founding Air America Radio, I have another day job. I have helped prosecute and defend white collar crime offenses for 38 years including experience with Mr. Fitzgerald's office in my home town Chicago on current political prosecutions. Those of us locally in the know here do not agree that Mr.
Fitzgerald is as independent as the press has made him out to be. Let me explain.

Fitzgerald had to indict Libby. Libby's lies were so blatant that Fitzgerald had no choice. But Fitzgerald had a golden opportunity to do enough work to prove the underlying crimes that he was originally investigating. Those crimes involve two offenses in the U.S. Criminal Code; Conspiracy and Outing a CIA agent. Essentially Fitzgerald indicted Libby for preventing his prosecutors from proving the underlying crimes he was investigating by using a baseball metaphor in that Libby "threw sand in the umpires eyes." That part is patently absurd.

What's a Soccer Mom to Do About Stem Cell Research

Thu Aug 04, 2005 at 09:28:10 AM PDT

I have been a faithful, voracious reader of DKos since election night 2004 (made it my home page and haven't changed it since then), and I have learned so much from all the posters here. But I am the first to admit that I am a novice in the political world, being a stay-at-home soccer mom in addition to freelance writing. So what I need to know is where can I absolutely make a difference in this fight concerning stem cell research and Bush's threatened veto?

My husband has young-onset Parkinson's at only 40 years old. I see him slipping away every day. We have four kids and I am desperate to help find a cure for this disease. He is the most kind and loving husband and father, and he deserves a full life enjoying our kids as they grow up. And yes, I do believe his life is more worthy than a mass of leftover cells that didn't get used in a fertility clinic.

However, it seems like such a daunting task for a newbie. Can anyone shed some light on where and what I can do to actually help this cause, and not simply complain about this hypocritical, morally corupt administration?
