Get FISA Right! Priorities to Stop The FISA Bill
Mon Jul 07, 2008 at 09:26:25 AM PDT
Less than 48hours to go - time to take action
The largest group on my.barackobama.com "Get FISA Right" has put together a number of resources for fighting the upcoming FISA bill. The FISA bill is scheduled to come up for consideration in the Senate this Tuesday. Dodd and Feingold are leading the charge against this horrible bill. The Get FISA Right group has an excellent activists' priorities page for what you should do to fight this bill.
Also if you have not read it yet, you should check out the letter the group sent to Obama. The unprecedented exchange between a presidential candidate and his supports continues. The largest group on the my.barackobama.com site has issued another open letter to Barack Obama. On Thursday Obama defended his intent to vote for the FISA bill - immunity or no immunity. The group says he should vigorously fight both the immunity provision and the whole bill on the floor of the Senate...
Huffington Post in Alliance with AOL to Scam Artitsts?
Fri Feb 03, 2006 at 11:00:55 AM PDT
So maybe this is going to prick some people who love the Huffington Post, but I think Arriana needs to be called out on this.
The Huffington Post has teamed with AOL in this contest that recruits artists to send in their videos or whatever that then get voted on, on the Huffington site. First off I am not sure what the Huffington Post is doing teaming with a mega media giant with a good track record of censorship and over overzealous-control-freakdom? Second why are they involved in such a contest that offers the typical, "we get as much as we want, you get shit" compensation to the original creators?

Public Editor/NYTimes One Step Forward One Standing Still
Thu Jun 02, 2005 at 04:10:36 PM PDT
Like many of you I am in rapture over the present Krugman - Orkent dual going on at Calame's
column echem...blog. But more interesting than the debate I think is the fact that the public editor now has a blog. It is interesting because it comes with this peculiar statement:
Byron Calame, the public editor for The New York Times, comments here on matters that aren't appropriate for his column in the Sunday Op-Ed pages, or won't fit into it. He may address issues raised in reader e-mail or post e-mail from readers and responses to them.
Readers are invited to respond to the public editor's comments in this Web Journal by e-mailing public@nytimes.com.
I find this amusing that he has both a column and blog. Of course around here nobody would ever have both a column and a blog, because then one would have 2 columns/blogs. DUH! I think this just wonderful evidence of the inevitable breakdown of the NYTime's top down media model. A letter I wrote to Mr. Calame expands on this more after the click, which hopefully he or someone over at the Times will finally understand.
NYC Only - Contact Swing Council Members! Re: Stadium
Wed Jun 01, 2005 at 07:13:46 AM PDT
A disturbing 28 of 51 City Council members have strongly stated their support for a Stadium on the West Side. After the flip is a list of the council members by district, and their phone numbers, who sent an open letter to Sheldon Silver and Joseph Bruno asking for approval for the stadium. The newest to join the supporting ranks are in bold. If ''and only if''you live in one of these districts call them! The text of the letter is also copied here after the click. Also contact Council Speaker Gifford Miller -(212) 535-5554 - and tell him to get people in line.

The purpose of this diary is to compile the links, quotes and resources posted to DavidNYC's call for action on investigating Greenspan's credibility.
DavidNYC's original post/call for action here:

This is a ever expanding list. But I have completed going through all the original posts with links, as noted by the (covered) note next to the original posts list at the bottom. If there is something to add to the links list add it in the comments.
Immigrant Round Ups and Prison Abuse
Thu Nov 18, 2004 at 08:39:36 AM PDT
NPR's Daniel Zwerdling has the most amazing report on prison abuse in the United States. The abuse happens to imigrants both illegal and legal.
Here is the story primer from NPR (bolding is mine):
Immigrant Detainees Tell of Attack Dogs and Abuse
November 17, 2004
Since Congress revamped the nation's immigration laws in the 1990s, the government has rounded up tens of thousands of immigrants each year who've committed a crime -- from murder to offenses such as overstaying their visas -- even if the offenders had already been punished.
These immigrants have been jailed for months or years while Homeland Security officials obtained a court order to deport them. Some have allegedly experienced brutal and violent conditions while in detention.
Really great report. The first half was last night. The second half airs tonight.
Here is the story at NPR where you can also listen.
The uneven implementation of "justice" here reminds me of the NY State Rockefeller Drug Laws.
