A Culture of Fear

Sat Aug 06, 2005 at 01:09:52 AM PDT

Hi folks, I know I haven't put up a diary in a long time. I've been pretty busy with family, school (finally graduated!) and work.

This is not a serious diary, nor one overly sarcastic. It's just something that happened to me the other day that I thought I would share.

Finally! A Reason for Texas' Insanity

Thu Mar 17, 2005 at 11:05:40 AM PDT

As some of you know, I don't like Texas. While California and Minnesota and a few other states work hard and try to help their people, Texas has, since Enron, been the black sheep of America.

Some people have attributed this erratic, anti-social, and psycho-sociopathic behavior to various things, including mad-cow disease (my candidate) or just plain stupidity, but researchers have finally found a possible answer: the drinking water.

Another Fairy-Tale Explanation of 1 Mil Votes

Sat Feb 26, 2005 at 11:09:04 AM PDT

How can this possibly be news?

Report: Fixes Saved 1M Votes in 2004

Improvements to voting machines and election administration saved a million votes that otherwise would likely have gone uncounted in the 2004 elections, with states and counties that made the most comprehensive upgrades recovering the most votes, a new academic analysis says.

The report released Monday by the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project looked at a key measure of election integrity -- residual votes, or ballots cast during an election on which voters failed to mark a choice or machines did not record it.

Molly Ivins on Wit

Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 04:07:14 PM PDT

Once in a while, as I'm trying to get the latest "This Modern World" out of the Working for Change website, I will read Molly Ivin's column, because I have often seen witty quotes by her in other people's sigs.

So far, she hasn't impressed me. "Texas wit" is almost an oxymoron, and while she may be the best humor columnist from Texas, that's kind of like saying "the shiniest wheel on a wheelbarrow" or "the heaviest feather."

However, this week's column is a meta-column (about a subject, rather than new information on a subject) about comedy and wit, and I thought it would be helpful to share it here.

What is "Free Speech?" A Metadiary.

Sun Jan 09, 2005 at 07:43:51 AM PDT

First of all, "fuck." Let's just get that out of the way in the beginning, shall we?

Ok, wikipedia is being hacked or something, as it crashed explorer within seconds of opening the page. So, I found around 3.5 ookamillion hits for "free speech primer" on google, and chose this one for no other reason than I clicked on it first.

A little tidbit:

All together, there are six (6) rights guaranteed by the First Amendment -- religion, speech, press, assembly, association, and petition -- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Collectively, they protect what is known as the freedom of expression (technically consisting of assembly, petition, press, and speech). Association is a derivative right from speech, assembly, and petition.

Non-Political: WARNING. CONTAINS SNARK.

Wed Jan 05, 2005 at 04:35:43 AM PDT

I just sent an email to Roger Ebert's regular bi-monthly "Answer Man" column.

I've tried submitting stuff before, but he hasn't printed any of it. So, today I decided not to be polite about it anymore.

My submission was to his "Ebert's Movie Glossary" subsection where he prints common movie cliches.

No time, so just a quickie

Mon Jan 03, 2005 at 01:47:18 PM PDT

In a stunning turn of events, a Southern TV station refuses to run a TV show the rest of the nation wasn't going to watch anyway but now will watch to see what the ruckus is about:

N.C. Station Refuses to Air 'Daddy'
NEW YORK - After protests from adoption advocates, a Fox affiliate in North Carolina chose not to air Monday's "Who's Your Daddy?" special, where an adoptive daughter tried to guess the identity of her birth father for a $100,000 prize.

My god, there's so much to snark here, I don't know where to begin...ah screwit, I'll begin in the same place I usually do...after the Freedom Fold. (TM)

The Unbearable Lightness of Being...Furious

Thu Dec 30, 2004 at 06:50:28 AM PDT

My usual handle on most boards has "hal" somewhere in it, because a) that's my real name, b) it fit perfectly on the old arcade game high score lists, c) I thought the IBM thing was cool and my first computer was an IBM PCjr, and d) my favorite superhero of all time is The Green Lantern, aka Hal Jordan:

Hal
Superhal
Superduperhal
Superduperduperhal(I don't like the numbers thing.)
da_hal
etc.

However, when I decided to join dkos, I spent a few days thinking about an appropriate handle, and decided on Furious Hal (other candidates: Angry Hal, Rabid Hal, HalOfDeath, Hal's Raging Bile Duct, Hal's Medulla Oblongata, etc.)

Since then, I've often been asked (or told outright) that it is obvious why I'm named "Furious."

In an effort to clear up any misunderstandings (and because I can't sleep) this diary will attempt to explain why I am "furious" Hal.

Just curious:

  1. Which blogs are self-supporting?

  2. How much does it cost to run a popular blog? (or, what is the business model?)

  3. A "popular blog" has how many hits per day?

  4. Is the market saturated? Have there been any recent blogs that have turned a profit?
