This Week in Jackassery: NRO on Obama speech
Mon Mar 24, 2008 at 03:48:10 PM PDT
So, it might seem that writing a diary about something stupid published by the NRO might be a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. But this is just too good to pass by with out comment.
Apparently Obama's speech last week. The one that was widely called a historical moment and one of the best political speeches of the last 30 years in fact has Obama crashing and burning. So says NRO contributor Victor Davis Hanson. The logic for this claim, as well as his criticism of Obama's speech are just so absurdly laughable that they really deserve a wider airing.
Hanson lambastes intellectual obtuseness. He makes intellectually obtuse proclamations. He makes bizzare claims of fact. He makes facts up
And just for fun, he ends by playing concern troll giving out advance laughably bad, but made more comical by the fact he so clearly believes it's good stuff. So, here we go...

MSNBC: Wall-Mart Hiring Youth, Not Paying Them
Thu Aug 02, 2007 at 11:43:18 PM PDT
I don't know how well this diary will be recived, it being 1:30 AM and half the site over at Yearly Kos (which I now sorely regret cheaping out and not registering for), but here it goes anyway.
Just when you think your well of outrage is dry, and you're too jaded to have any reaction more than a cynical laugh of scorn to a story of corruption, something comes along that, simply for its sheer brazenness, wipes the cynicism away in a Chicago second. This is one of those stories.
In a stunning act of journalism that forgoes the usual obsession for balance over substance that afflicts most reporting on anything that matters, Newsweek, by way of MSNBC brings us this tale of corporate greed and corruption
Bush's Exec. Order Power Grab: taking aim at Youngstown
Thu Jul 19, 2007 at 07:52:14 AM PDT
Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer or even a conlaw expert. The following is my lay person's analysis of the facts cited within.
Those just waking up may only now be reading this poorly titled but important recommend diary, which discuses this executive order issued by Bush on July 17th, which to summarize allows the president to unilaterally seize property of "Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq."
This is a bizarre and alarming order, which patently violates the 4th and 5th amendments to the US Constitution, as well as potentially the 1st, depending on how it is applied.
The conclusions of it's author, if I understand him correctly, is this is effectively a declarations of martial law. Besides having a problem with the semantics of that statement, I don't believe the aim of the Bush administration with this order is to harass anti-war activists or other political opponents. I believe Bush is in fact using this order to initiate a much larger and potentially dangerous and far reaching power grab.
Gravel Drops Consumption Tax; Unveils New Tax Policy
Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 04:23:55 PM PDT
Washington
Fresh from his performance at CNN’s Democratic presidential primary debate, and criticism from liberal activists over his support of a consumption tax to replace the national income tax, Mike Gravel unveiled his new tax policy today. The plan abandons the idea of a national sales tax, while still accomplishing Gravel’s stated goal of eliminating the IRS and current tax code. Instead of his earlier plan of a consumption tax, the new plan proposing collecting taxes from individuals by implementing a system of tax farming. "Tax farming was good enough for the Romans, and by God it’s good enough for us!" said an apparently agitated Gravel in a voice several decibels too loud.
Harry Reid is UNFIT to be Majority Leader
Fri Apr 20, 2007 at 02:13:32 PM PDT
The first half of this diary is snark. Read all the way through before commenting.
That’s it, I’m done, feed up finished. He’s been my favorite member of the Democratic leadership ever since I found out he once strangled someone for offering him a bribe. He’s run rings around the Senate Republican leaders as minority leader. Back when we were still in the minority, he put the Senate in closed scission and won a news cycle against the Republican majority at a time when America was finally waking up to what everyone here already knew.
But I found out today none of that matters
ACTION ALERT: TELL YOUR SENATOR TO CENSURE ALLEN
Tue Aug 15, 2006 at 05:22:11 AM PDT
So, I know there's already two diaries about Allen's royal fuck up the other day in which he revealed himself as the virulent racist we all always knew he was on the rec list, and God know`s how many others on the recent list. But me feeling is that this story is important enough, for a large enough number of reasons, that we should keep it in circulation, and if we can do a Connecticut week, then why not a "George Allen is a racist jackass" week?
For those who spent yesterday under a rock and don't know what I'm referring to, see here

Can We Talk About This Like Grown-Ups?
Sat Jun 24, 2006 at 03:39:55 AM PDT
Are we grown ups? Can we, you know, talk about things openly and maturely, with out it turning into a big fat hairy deal? If the events of today are any indication, no. We can't do it. We can get John Tester into the general election, we can raise boat loads of cash when CT gets his house run through, but we are seemingly incapable of having an honest conversation about a fucking word.
2008: State of the Republican Field
Wed May 31, 2006 at 01:42:18 PM PDT
As we're heading into the mid-terms, we're getting to the point where a clear view of the 2008 Presidential field is starting to emerge. On the Republican side, most of the candidates on the field are names we're familiar with. However, the shifting political landscape and various other factors have changed the shape the field is in.
Below is an up to date list of likely and in some cases not so likely GOP hopefuls, with analysis about how each would effect the race, both in the primary and the general.
Please note that I've borrowed heavily from the Wikipedia article Potential Republican candidates in the 2008 U.S. presidential election for basic informational text on the candidates. However, most of the analysis is my own.
To Hell With Hackett (updated)
Wed Mar 15, 2006 at 03:43:16 PM PDT
This diary is based on a comment made in another diary about this issue. It has been edited and expanded from the original comment
Last night I took a break from reading about media coverage of the presidency to watch the Daily Show with my friends, a common nightly occurrence. I'm normally a fan of the Daily Show, because not only being funny as Hell, it usually goes after people who need to be taken down a peg.
But what I saw last night wasn't funny, no matter how much my friends laughed at it. Maybe it would have seemed funny if I hadn't known the situation. Or hadn't be privy to such an underhanded attack on the party I proudly claim membership in, or on my own personal political savvy.
Yes, I'm talking about Paul Hackett.
Goldfish is Bad for DKos or phrases that let you know to stop reading
Tue Feb 07, 2006 at 11:53:55 AM PDT
We all know there are some phrases that just stop a discussion cold. You know when you see them that it's all over, and any further input from you will only lead to a 20-round flame war. Whether your reaction is to take a step back, or go "Bring it", here's a useful list of some of the most popular phrases that have showed up again and again on Dkos (although some very rare examples have been included due to their sheer egregiousness). I have used repersentitive Dialogue to capture the essence of each phrase. Exact wording and usage can vary widely.
Go below the cut to find my list, and if you have any to add, post them to the comments.
Merry Festivus!
Fri Dec 23, 2005 at 04:33:04 PM PDT
Yes, it's that time again. Time for feats of strength, airing of grievances, and an aluminum pole.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the holiday, or who don't know that it has a history outside the TV show Seinfeld, Wikipedia will fill you in.
Festivus is a nondenominational holiday featured in an episode of Seinfeld, a popular American television sitcom of the 1990s. The holiday was a plot device in episode number 166 of the show, entitled "The Strike", which first aired on December 18, 1997. Many people, influenced or inspired by Seinfeld, now celebrate the holiday, in varying degrees of seriousness. Some do it religiously, others do it in good tidings in their respect to Seinfeld.

Violent Video Games: Trading our rights for moral correctness
Tue Dec 06, 2005 at 08:40:33 PM PDT
It's been discussed on this site to death, with a furry that's rarely seen without the words "pie" or "Armando" being mentioned: violent video games. Sadly, even in this progressive community, there is a large contingent of people who believe games with graphic depictions of violence are such a menace, that the government should regulate their sale, ostensibly to prevent them from getting into the hands of minors. This contingent is well represented in the Democratic party with powerful allies such as Hillary Clinton, and Joe Libermen (perhaps the only issue many of the pro-regulation folks agree with him on).
While I got go on at length about the irony and borderline hypocrisy of the pro-regulation stance, I think a more compelling argument against government regulation can be found in the practical concerns such would entail.

Sox Take 2-0 lead in World Series
Sun Oct 23, 2005 at 08:50:56 PM PDT
Awsome game tonight. I love a good nail bitter, particuerly when my team comes out on top in it. That home run in the ninth was a truely great moment from Chicago, I don't care what side of Madison you're from.
So now we're going to Texas with a two game lead. And I can't wait to crush the Astros down there just to see, on live TV, the scowls from 41 and "the Beautiful Mind." Maybe Dubya will even be there!
This is an World Series open thread
All the President's Men: Leakgate predictions (w/poll)
Fri Oct 07, 2005 at 06:51:49 PM PDT
So, on the day of Rove's reappearance before the federal grand jury investigating the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame, in the growing scandal know popularly known as "Leakgate" I thought it might be good for us to take some time, and make our predictions about where the grand jury is headed.
Many options have been discussed, ranging from indictments up to and including President Bush, to an end to the investigation with no charges.
Below the fold, I'll detail some of the most likely outcomes, and also make my predictions for the final results.
Bush stays on Vacation, despite oncoming Armageddon
Mon Aug 29, 2005 at 12:52:17 AM PDT
Back last winter, during the Asian Tsunami crisis I was more dismayed then usual by the conduct of President Bush. At a time when we did not know what the extent of the damage, both in human and monetary terms, was; what the effect on foreign or domestic
financial markets would be; how many Americans had been caught up in the tragedy the President of the United States did not feel fit to cancel his vacation, and return to the White House and it's Situation Room. Apparently, a tragedy with casualties in the tens of thousands didn't warrant that kind of concern.
Rage of Goldfish: WYFP Morning/Insomnia Ed.
Fri Aug 26, 2005 at 05:36:25 AM PDT
Yup, that's right I'm here. Anyone who keeps track of my posting patterns knows this is strange. But I'm not up obscenely early, I'm up disgustingly late. After a week of timely (though not always quality) sleep, and the better part of a month with out this sort of thing, I've got a bad case of insomnia. I'd love nothing more then to get into bed right now and fall asleep for a few hours, but I've tried, it didn't work.
So instead, I'm posting this Goldfish's WYFP: Morning/Insomnia Edition.

What's my fucking problem? Well thanks for asking.
Hey gang. I know Pastordan usually posts these, but I got tired waiting, and I really need to let lose. I figuer I have enough FPs to fill their own diary, I might as well make one.
Head below the flip for my FPs.
