Fundraising advice needed

Thu Nov 22, 2007 at 01:58:59 PM PDT

Thanksgiving has put me in the giving mood.  I have read/heard so many stories about people going out of their way to help others.  Now I want to do the same.  I am involved in other online communities and came across a way to help out a needy family.  The problem is that I have no idea how to deal with the financial aspects of doing a fundraiser for an individual.  This community was the logical place to look for help on that account.

My initial thought was that I could create a Paypal account that people could give to and then I could transfer all of the money from the account to the individual in question.  But I would prefer to avoid Paypal, and more importantly I would prefer a situation where the money is never directly in my control.   I guess what I am looking for is a reputable website (or even a nonprofit group or charity) that would be able to accept contributions and that would then disburse the money to the recipient once the fundraiser was over. (Basically a non-political ActBlue)

Anyone have any suggestions?  Preferably something with little or no fees.  I'd hate to see 5-10% of the money contributed not making it to the target.  Thanks for the help and a happy thanksgiving to all.
