Wait until 0 troops are left? A calculus for Iraq War supporters
Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 11:41:57 AM PDT
Let me pose a calculus that should have nothing to do with how anyone perceives reality. It is just an exercise that anyone can take and use. My hypothetical situation could be wrong. Maybe you think the outlook in Iraq is still bright and will continue to improve. If so, I still ask that you humor me below.
NOLA Photos: '1000% times worse than... on TV'
Tue Nov 22, 2005 at 02:03:35 PM PDT
(The title's quote was taken from out grrl's outstanding diary of 11/16, "Notes from NOLA". I was inspired by blksista's diary from today, 11/22, "The Cajun Republic of Color?". Many good comments on the state of affairs in NOLA are in those diaries there, and therefore, it might be useful to devote commentary here primarily to linked photo contents. Thanks.)
I admit I haven't looked too hard, but at least on Flickr and PBase, I found some photos that show an idea of the devastation Hurricane Katrina created in New Orleans and vicinity.
Feel free to post any links to additional public photos, particularly corresponding "before" shots, in comments below.
* Photo links I preface with an asterisk are potentially more interesting.
Protest 'Freedom' Walk with... freedom fun
Fri Sep 09, 2005 at 10:03:14 AM PDT
Like many of you, I've been thinking of how best to "counter" this America Supports You "Freedom" Walk. Some people have suggested groups try to join the walk without registering and risk arrest. Others have suggested pointing or turning backs on the route, or testing law enforcement's tolerance for their political expression. I do like these ideas. I've wondered, however, how to involve people who either are disinclined toward overt provocation (as I am) or are afraid of being arrested.
Then, I recalled an unusual and mostly successful queer rights rally from when I was in college (more after the jump). And with a bit of adaptation, I've thought of this (and hopefully some others have thought the same!):
For the America Supports You Freedom march, people could just head out along the parade route (or near it (or as close as one can)) and... demonstrate our freedom to have fun.
All eyes on the prize of 2006!

With Republicans finally stumbling in the public light, I hope you are all thinking of ways Democrats can take their failures and win in 2006.
There are no end of reasons why the elections in 2006 are the most important to consider.
"Was Lincoln gay?" Debate Is Also Relevant to Greatness
Thu Dec 16, 2004 at 03:12:43 PM PDT
[ED Note: This is a continuation of an argument that more-or-less starts here in
Hprof's diary
"Was Lincoln Gay? A Historian's View":
"why couldn't". I also re-inserted a line from there, per SeanF's protestation in a comment below.]
It's enough for scholars to believe that Lincoln a great statesperson, Whitman was a great poet, Tchaikovsky a great composer, James Baldwin a great novelist, Margaret Cho a great comic, [insert/substitute your picks, or people you understand to be great], etc.
One needs not look at their personal lives or bring out just one personal characteristic to come to these conclusions. One need only compare their artistic output with others' to determine their greatness (using whatever standard one wishes).
Some may argue that to bring in this superfluous stuff diminishes the accomplishment. But I disagree.
(R) Shunning Is Grist for 2006 (D) House Candidates
Wed Nov 24, 2004 at 10:50:16 AM PDT
Someone with a little bit of web space needs to document all instances of House Republicans stripped of power or denied appropriations. Such a list will be the grist for Democratic House candidates in 2006.
Here is one of the first entries for 21 Republicans:

Istook derails earmarks
Democratic House candidates running against such incumbents could use this list to show how powerless their opponents are even in a Republican-controlled House. Such a list will show that constituent voices will be ignored as long as the Republican incumbent remains in the seat. And any of these Republicans' capitulations to House leadership can prove to voters that their representative isn't really moderate.
Catch-22 is in the House for moderate Republicans!
Bush's new winning strategy? Bush... for Peace?

Bush for Peace
At the screening I attended, I laughed, of course, but also felt a sense of catharsis, for I finally saw and heard what I've wanted to hear from a President. A few months old, but I hadn't seen this passed around. Still and always worth a viewing.
