... And the winner of the popular vote IS ...

Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 03:53:06 PM PDT

... an utterly meaningless concept.

This is my first diary in 3 years and it's not even a proper diary. Almost entirely content free and a rehash of a discussion I had in the comments, it's not even a particularly original topic.

However it troubles me that this idea, of there being some importance attached to the "popular vote", just won't go away and I feel compelled to examine it one more time.

So the US military used napalm in Falluja? Big F#cking Deal.

Tue Nov 08, 2005 at 06:17:54 AM PDT

A war crime was it? Well really. I'm shocked.

Does anyone in their right mind have any doubt that the bombing, invasion and conquest of Iraq was anything other than a long series of war crimes, beginning before the official war and continuing throughout the occupation?

Mayor of London calls for Iraq withdrawal

Thu Aug 04, 2005 at 05:06:20 AM PDT

Moving on from his restrained statements immediately after last month's bombings, Mayor of London Ken Livingstone is again speaking out against an occupation that is making us all less safe:
It is four weeks since bombers indiscriminately killed and maimed ordinary Londoners. Protecting London from terrorists requires the best possible policing - which, in turn, needs the greatest possible flow of information from all communities. It also demands that we shrink the pool of the alienated that bombers draw on by treating all communities as equal parts of British society - not only theoretically, but in reality. And it means withdrawing from Iraq. All are interrelated.

Good to know that Robin Cook is not the only voice of reason in a Labour party dominated by the wilfully blind.

London Attacks - 2/3 of British adults believe Iraq link

Tue Jul 19, 2005 at 03:01:07 AM PDT

From the Guardian.

It seems that many people are not falling for the spin.

According to the poll, 33% of Britons think the prime minister bears "a lot" of responsibility for the London bombings and a further 31% "a little".
Only 28% of voters agree with the government that Iraq and the London bombings are not connected.

"War on Terror" - UK readers

The BBC documentary Power of Nightmares is being shown again, beginning tonight at 23.20 on BBC2, with part 2 tomorrow and part 3 on Thursday. I mentioned the series earlier today by chance and have only just discovered it is being re-shown.

I strongly recommend it.

City of Ghosts

Tue Jan 11, 2005 at 05:28:31 AM PDT

The Guardian has some first independent reports from within Fallujah in the aftermath of the assault, plus a clip from a film being shown on tonight's Channel 4 News.
Last November, US military forces, backed by British soldiers from the Black Watch, launched their biggest ever assault on the city of Falluja, Operation Phantom Fury.

Over the last two weeks, Ali Fadhil, an Iraqi doctor turned film-maker for Guardianfilms, has succeeded in making it into the city and the surrounding refugee camps. He discovered people had been shot in their beds, rabid dogs were feeding on corpses, and there was little to no water, electricity or sewage. A city of over 300,000 people had been destroyed and its inhabitants were homeless.

With just two weeks until the Iraqi elections, not a single voter in Falluja has received a ballot paper. Far from stabilising the region in preparation for the election, it seems the US military's decision to use the Iraqi National Guard against this Sunni city has fanned the flames of civil war in the entire country.
