Gene Pitney 1941-2006

Wed Apr 12, 2006 at 08:07:27 PM PDT

Well, maybe he wasn't QUITE as cool as Roy Orbison, but he had something of that same vibe, and I liked a bunch of his songs when I was a kid, and when a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame checks out, it deserves at least a little diary at dKos.  RIP Gene Pitney, who was found dead on his hotel room bed, age 65, while touring in Cardiff, Wales.

Retired USAF Colonel on 9-11

Tue Mar 28, 2006 at 08:04:47 PM PDT

Well, Charlie Sheen says that he doubts the Official Story of 9-11, and while a few Kossers have approved of his statements, others have sneered, saying "Yo, old Charlie's just a drunk and a pill freak, who cares what he says?"

Of course, George W. Bush is also a drunk and a druggie, but most of y'all seem prepared to accept what HE says about 9-11:  that nineteen mostly 20-something Arab guys with boxcutters hijacked four passenger jetliners, and flew three of them into landmark buildings.  Heh.  No "conspiracy theory" there, right?

Anyway, without further ado I am onna flip reproducing a statement made at a press conference in Alexandria, VA on 3/13/2006 by George Nelson, Colonel, U.S. Air Force (retired).

So far as I'm aware Col. Nelson is neither a drunk, nor a drug addict.

Loose Change: Fox Dons Tinfoil

Fri Dec 02, 2005 at 11:10:42 AM PDT

As some here know and as my moniker indeed suggests, I -- a sober, middle-aged lawyer, family guy, and native New Yorker -- am one of those troubling persons who feels convinced that the Official Story of the 9-11 attacks is a huge lie; that the attacks were permitted to happen by BushCo or, even more likely, actively sponsored, planned and abetted by them, and that, accordingly, we are in much deeper doo-doo than we had imagined.

Now, ye scoffers, it seems that even FOX is taking up the tinfoil.  More onna flip.

Quotations About Zionism.

Thu Sep 15, 2005 at 04:26:21 PM PDT

Although non-Jewish, I grew up in a largely Jewish community in NJ.  I am old enough to have seen quite a few of my friends' parents, grandparents or other relations with camp tatoos, and many more lost near relations to Hitler.

I have always wanted the Jews to be OK.  Safe, protected, unharmed.

But as the Israel-Arab conflict wears on and on, I have become progressively more disillusioned about Zionism.  The underlying philosophy of the thing seems offensive.  Consider the quotes below.

LA Cuts Hurt, What About MS, AL??

This isn't a Pontification Diary, it's a request for information.  About Katrina, the Gulf Coast states, and the effects of Bushista budget cuts.  Please see below.

Huge Merkan Base in Israel???

Tue Jul 12, 2005 at 05:12:57 PM PDT

As a proud wearer of the tinfoil hat, I frequent web sites that most Kossacks wouldn't be caught dead on.  However, with the exception of a number of mostly Republican politicians, I firmly believe that the fact that a man/woman may not be fully reliable is not proof that they are always wrong.

Prom Date Kosher?

Wed Jun 29, 2005 at 10:23:10 PM PDT

I live in Westchester County, New York.  I grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, which at the time had (and still has, although there has been a large increase in the population of African-Americans) a sizeable Jewish population.

I am a nonfundamentalist Christian of ecumenical bent.  My friends, my social circle throughout my life has been pretty mixed.  Mostly white, yes, but heavily Jewish (as perhaps 40% of my schoolmates were Jews) and Italian.  I'm a half-southern white boy.  My wife's a bad-tempered Italian girl.  (Well, the phrase is mildly redundant).  One of my kid's Vietnamese.

Dr. King, Rep. Conyers, Sen. Byrd

Sat May 14, 2005 at 08:50:23 PM PDT

I was not quite thirteen when the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington, D.C.

It was a hot day where my family lived, in New Jersey, and the summer was winding down.  This moment preceded the assassination of John F. Kennedy by less than three months.  My childhood, such as it was (my mother suffered from muscular dystrophy, so it wasn't exactly normal) was nearing its end.

"Suicided" Lobbyist tied to "Jeff Gannon"?

Mon May 09, 2005 at 07:53:07 AM PDT

Nothing delights a Kossack more than another story about our favorite "Conservative Guy," faux journalist, faux ex-Marine but genuine male prostitute and professional liar and poseur James Dale Guckert.  Nothing more, that is, excepting perhaps a story which, if confirmed, may blow the doors off of the White House, and reveal the most damaging implications of giving prostitutes and self-aggrandizing nutjobs 24/7 access to the White House.  Gotcha interested?  Read on, Macduff!

Should We Celebrate Divorce?

Mon Apr 18, 2005 at 04:31:59 PM PDT

Well, some weeks back I drew some hot, hot flames for a diary arguing that, given a 50% divorce rate and what happens to fathers and children in the no-fault divorce, maybe U.S. women are, statistically speaking, a lousy bet as wives.

Half-seriously, I suggested that American men consider marrying foreign women instead.

The other day, I read a reference to a remark attributed to Germaine Greer that I found somewhat disheartening.  So, being a glutton for punishment, I'm again going to disagree with a feminist.  Yow!  Where's my asbestos overcoat at?

Kossacks Loving Genocide

Tue Apr 12, 2005 at 03:15:18 PM PDT

Within the past few days, on posts relating to the surrender of Lee's army in 1865, a number of Kossacks referred to secession as "treason," and to Confederates as "traitors."  When, some months ago, I posted arguing to the contrary, I received numerous highly personal and nasty flames, with even the All-Knowing Armando labeling me a "fool."

Nothing but persistent, in response to the recent calumnies, I again posted a diary.  Following a brief, snarky preface, I presented, otherwise without comment, some eminent persons' defenses of state sovereignty, generally, and the right of secession, specifically.

Secession as Treason

Sat Apr 09, 2005 at 09:53:51 PM PDT

Well, it's time a son of the South weighed in on the anniversary of Lee's surrender.

Let's hang some of those Southern rascals with their own words, OK?

Big Brother Comes to Campus

Why might that be?

Adult Stem Cells From Your Nose!

Thu Mar 24, 2005 at 10:13:15 AM PDT

I have always favored stem cell rsearch, although to be honest when it's discussed in detail, I feel somewhat queasy about it, a funny feeling in my feet that makes me want to think about something else.

Should US Men Marry Foreigners?

Tue Mar 01, 2005 at 02:16:14 PM PDT

My diary is directed to upstanding straight men who desire marriage, and to raise their children under their own roof until the children are at least 18.  It is not directed to abusers, drunks, chronic layabouts or "deadbeat dads," nor to feminists of the variety that consider the two-parent household oppressive, and want to do away with it.  My thesis is that men who wish for an enduring marriage, to remain close to their children, and for their children to turn out well should consider marrying foreign women from more traditional cultures, and not American women.  I know this is a provocative thesis, but while reality-based arguments will be respectfully received, presumptions about my character and name-calling will not be replied to.

Secret Withdawal of 25K US Troops?

Tue Feb 08, 2005 at 08:40:45 AM PDT

On rense.com, I read that 25,000 U.S. troops were withdrawn in secret from Iraq within the past few days.

The report, attributed to "Islam Memo," states that more than 65 military jets left Basra airbase, and 40 American ships left the port of Basra, carrying American troops to Kuwait.  The sudden departure is said to have been confirmed by Mr. Kamal Albasry, "an administrator in charge of Um Al-Qasr port."

According to the report, eyewitnesses said the departing troops were evidently overjoyed, and that Iraqi children threw stones at them.  (More)

NY "Gay Marriage" Decision Hits Nail on Head

Mon Feb 07, 2005 at 11:03:20 AM PDT

I hope I won't be chastised for doing a diary on Hernandez v. Robles, the New York Supreme (trial-level) Court decision that has held that prohibiting same-sex marriages violates due process and equal protection rights under the Constitution of New York.  It was reported in in several diaries last week.

Having had the opportunity to read the judge's entire decision this morning, however, several things stood out that I wanted to comment on.

My first, and broadest comment is that from my point of view -- I am a New York lawyer, with nineteen years' experience -- Justice Ling-Cohan's opinion is wonderfully well-reasoned, and seems to this country lawyer to be very strong on the law, and is anything but a merely moral argument.  The judge may have gone out on a limb, but she is sitting on what looks to me like a very sound one.

More beneath the fold.

Feingold Bill to Abolish Federal Death Penalty

Mon Jan 31, 2005 at 06:04:51 AM PDT

Today on TruthOut I saw an item concerning legislation introduced by Sen. Russell Feingold to abolish the death penalty at the federal level.

As you probably know, since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty, the number of crimes that are punishable by death at the federal level has mushroomed.

I am opposed to the death penalty, perhaps more as a practical matter than as a moral question per se.  I respect the argument that certain crimes are so heinous that, arguably, no other punishment is adequate.  More below the staple.
