So, with all the well-meaning but morose diaries lately having to do with the sheer hopeless travesty of progressives and the Democratic party having any hopes of building towards a majority in House and Senate, I've found myself thinking a lot lately about the old fable of the redoubtable Henny-penny. Bear with me (i.e. please read through to the end--I do have a point!). My thanks to Joseph Jacobs at English Fairy Tales for his most entertaining version of the tale, per below.
Barbara Boxer is speaking in Congress right now about the rationale and prosecution of the Iraq War. She looks tired out, and mad, and she is speaking to the issue of how the war has been presented and sold by this administration.
An Interactive Psychodrama: A Fitzmas evening with George and Laura, Friday, October 28, 2005, 7:50 pm EST, at the White House
Draw near, Dear Reader, and spend a cosy evening with George and Laura. The indictments have been handed down, the hard work of ignoring subpoenas and polls is over for now, and the twins are in bed...somewhere. But there's a mystery a-brewing...and you, Dear Reader, can help to solve it!!#** So read on....
I generally try to avoid reading anything by David Brooks, because his columns are so poorly thought out, and he is such a selective historian. However, today I made the mistake of reading one, and it was so egregiously self-serving, I just had to respond. See the column itself here. My letter to the editors below the flip(and I sent a similar version directed to Brooks himself, and to the Public Editor).
No matter what Karl Rove ends up being indicted for, and no matter whether his part in the Plame leak was central or peripheral, the right wing noise machine will no doubt ramp up to defend him, and whoever else is involved, when the indictments actually come down. There's a perception in many quarters that Rove is an evil genius, plotting every jewel-like move for years ahead, capable of setting up the dominoes in perfect counterpoint So As To Bring Down The World As We Know It. Puhleeeeez...he's a second-rate thug capable of lying, stealing, and cheating, but a genius he's not. Much more after the flip!
Live on C-SPAN2 right now--Senator John Warner (R-Va)is taking Senator Dick Durbin to task for his strong, anti-torture stance--and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)is not backing down. What a day this has been--short diary, but wanted folks to know. Mitch McConnel now taking him to task--and Durbin is not backing down again! Good for him--e-mail him some support.
And now for something completely different....Homeland Security Rocks!!!
As someone who has sat on either side of the Canadian border on several occasions, paperwork apparently in order but being glanced at suspiciously by border guards the whole time--OK, I admit it, I'm paranoid, there were lots of us sitting there--I took the following story personally.
If you are going to be participating in demonstrations next weekend (March 18-20) to protest the second anniversary of the Iraq War, you might consider the following request for action from Ramsey Clark, who heads up a national, grassroots movement to impeach George Bush and Company. More beneath the fold....
Update [2005-3-12 18:4:59 by Armando]: From the diaries (also Recommended) by Armando. No endorsement (or non-endorsement) of a boycott, but the story is a big one.
The New York Times has just posted a very long, detailed expose of the pervasive use by the Bush administration of covert propoganda, and the necessary complicity of television media outlets and their so-called journalists across the country. The article, "News or Public Relations? For Bush It's a Blur," by David Barstow and Robin Stein, may be accessed here:
It is time that we held those privileged to amass wealth and influence at the expense of the American public's right to know accountable through a substantive grassroots initiative. Since we know that the collective Achille's heel of the corporate press is its terror that money might be lost....Sinclair, anyone?
Mr. Ramsey Clark, Attorney General under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and champion of the increasingly endangered notions that 1.) nations and their governments are bound to act in accordance with the rule of laws, and 2.) those accused of a crime are to be considered innocent until proven guilty, has initiated a grassroots movement to impeach George W. Bush and his henchmen and women. To read the Articles of Impeachment, sign the petition to impeach, and find out how you can help to raise the profile and effectiveness of this initiative, go to:ImpeachBush
Ok, so I finally lost it tonight trying to stomach "Hardball" and sent Matthews this e-mail mid-broadcast as he berated the AARP spokesperson without let-up, insisting on dialogue while blocking it himself:
