Iran claims to have launched a satellite

Sun Aug 17, 2008 at 08:12:08 AM PDT

BBC story on purported satellite launch

Iran claims to have launched a satellite, no word on whether this is real, or whether the satellite made orbit. However, if there is an Iranian satellite in orbit, there will be a lot of yelling and screaming tonight from the Wingnuts, so some careful analysis is in order.

Wed Aug 06, 2008 at 09:53:38 AM PDT

Well, for all those Edwards supporters who asked: "If the Enquirer story is true, where are the photos?", well here they are.

This sucks for Edwards and his family, but there is a lesson to be learned for us.

Breaking: its all tied up! Obama 47, McCain 46

Sat Jul 12, 2008 at 08:52:14 PM PDT

OK, so this is just a tracking poll, and its Rasmussen at that:

Rasmussen daily tracking poll

and frankly, I don't believe the numbers, the margin of error is so high for this kind of poll that reality could be much different. The reason I am posting this is not to cause alarm, but to present information that we don't often see here, bad poll numbers for Obama.

Iran Missile Tests, Nothing to See Here, Move Along

Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 07:45:34 AM PDT

The MSM was awash today with news stories about Iranian missile tests, which effectively spooked the markets, pushed up the price of oil, and even prompted comments from McCain and Obama.

The real story is that these missiles tests are nothing new, and the "fearsome" Shahab-3 missile is an obsolete system, little improved over Saddam's Scuds.

Answers: What is WRONG with Bill Clinton?

Fri Jun 06, 2008 at 02:15:19 PM PDT

Beginning in 2006, former President William  Clinton has been publicly demonstrating a somewhat violent temper, leading in 2008 to his significantly damaging his wife's presidential campaign, and prompting Obama supporters to downplay the potential role of Clinton in the fall campaign. My belief is that these public displays of temper are not pre-planned, but instead are symptoms of a medical condition, and thus cannot be avoided.

For information about the medical condition, see:

Read the story HERE

This was reported in the media a few days ago, but no one has diaried the story yet, so here goes:

Background:

For many years, NASA has trained its astronauts in working in zero gravity, using an aged Boeing 707 class aircraft, using special maneuvers to produce brief periods of weightlessness. This aircraft, called the "Vomit Comit" by the astronauts, became very expensive to maintain, and so NASA decided to investigate if there were cheaper alternatives.

Ultimately, NASA contracted with a private firm, Zero-G Corp, to provide astronaut training, using a converted Boeing 727.  The new contract provides the services cheaper than the old government maintained aircraft, as the private company has other customers apart from NASA, and so NASA does not have to foot the bill to maintain the aircraft.

You would think that this would be the end of the story, but there is a "Rest of the Story" below ...

DoD investigates "clean" space solar power

Mon Jun 25, 2007 at 10:21:39 AM PDT

I don't think this is what Don Rumsfeld had in mind when he was considering "transforming" the military, but apparently, DoD is actually considering using solar power from space for national security purposes; ie reducing dependence on MidEast oil for energy.

Space-based Solar Power?

Can FOX "News" Really be This Stupid?

Sat Jun 23, 2007 at 11:21:07 AM PDT

NASA Watch says they are!

Editor's note: I just got a call from some producer at Fox news. She said "we're looking for critics to go on Neil Cavuto's show at 4:00 pm topday who are critics of NASA and think that it should be shut down. Is that you guys?"

I declined.

Gee, you'd think that they'd do a little more research. I could have said yes and then gone in to the studio and ruined the "balance" of their broadcast.

"Pirates III" as Metaphor for the War on Terror

Thu Jun 14, 2007 at 10:32:56 PM PDT

Was Pirates of the Caribbean scripted to reflect the Bush War on Terror? Was the villain of the movie, a British corporate naval leader, a stand-in for George Bush?  Did the changing alliances among the pirates and their British pursuers reflect Bush Administration's vacillation as to who our enemies are, one day fighting the Sunnis and funding the Shiites, and the next, giving weapons to the Sunni insurgents we were fighting?

Israeli Satellite Launch Portends Iran Strike?

Mon Jun 11, 2007 at 07:46:28 AM PDT

Israel today launched a small spy satellite into orbit. This is a rare event, but not one normally tied into an imminent military operation, as this release implies:

Gee, I wonder which MidEast war this summer they mean?

Ofeq-7 was launched westward over the Mediterranean by the home-made Shavit three-stage solid fuel vehicle from the Palmachim aerospace base at 02:15 IT, June 11. The first images should be received by Tuesday night.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the launching was part of a seven-day US-Israeli air exercise taking place this week in the Negev which, though presented officially as a routine practice, reflects wide expectations of a Middle East war this summer.

Joe Lieberman admits US kidnapped Iranian diplomat

Sun Apr 08, 2007 at 12:38:33 PM PDT

During Wolf Blitzer's show today, Joe Lieberman admitted that the US kidnapped an Iranian diplomat, and then released the diplomat as part of the deal to get the 15 British Marines released by the Iranians. This is by far the most important development in the various talk shows today - if Lieberman is to be believed, then this is an explicit admission that the US is not only in the kidnapping business in Iraq, but also is in the business of holding credentialed diplomats against their will.

How many other kidnapping victims in Iraq have been kidnapped by the US military?

Economic growth 3rd quarter only 1.6%, worst in 3 years

Fri Oct 27, 2006 at 07:26:48 AM PDT

It looks like the housing bubble burst has impacted the economy as a whole:

http://biz.yahoo.com/...

"Economic growth slowed to a crawl in the third quarter, advancing at a pace of just 1.6 percent, the worst in more than three years.

The latest snapshot of the economy, released by the Commerce Department on Friday, showed that the slumping housing market figured prominently in the economy's dramatic loss of momentum. Investment in homebuilding was cut by the biggest amount since early 1991. The reading on gross domestic product was weaker than the 2.1 percent pace many economists were forecasting."

Dick Morris sez GoP is catching up!

Tue Oct 24, 2006 at 11:20:12 AM PDT

According to Dick Morris:

http://www.vote.com/...

the voters in the Republican base are coming home as the election nears. He cites polls showing that some Senate races are tightening, even the ones previously cited as being "lost" for the Republicans.

Dick Morris may be an evil Republican, but he's not stupid, and he believes that at the end of the day, the Republican base will turn out for GoP candidates, at least enough to make these races tighter than expected. He even bashes Howard Dean for having to borrow funds for the last two weeks.
