WP/Kaiser Survey of Evacuees

The Washington Post, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Harvard School of Public Health have conducted a survey of evacuees.... hopefully this doesn't count as a repeat:  this diary by chipware mentions the results of this survey on the topic of whether evacuees plan to return, but I thought people would be interested in seeing the whole thing.

A sample of key results below the fold - this summary comes from an email that was sent around my office.  I don't know if it's going around elsewhere.  I'm trying to find out where it comes from to credit it properly, which I will do in the comments when I can. Stop the Revolution!

A number of diaries and comments recently - on impeachment and other possible actions in protest of the current Administration - have invoked the Declaration of Independence and the right to revolution articulated therein.  I'm particularly thinking of this one by Georgia10.  The words they call on are:
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

I'm here to say that I don't think this is what we want to do.  Follow me.

Update in Lt. Dyer rape case

Didn't see this posted... This diary tells the story of 1st Lt. Jennifer Dyer, who was raped at her base, given two weeks to "get over it" and then accused of being AWOL when she refused to report back to the same base where her assailant still worked.  She requested that she be allowed to report to another base, and the Army refused to consider it.

Well, according to the Oregonian, the Army has heard about it, and has reconsidered its position.  While apparently 1st Lt. Dyer heard about this from the media, and is still talking with lawyers about what she will do, it still seems to be good news for her.

Kerry ad idea re unreleased reports

This is a sidebar from the discussion of the CIA report that is being withheld.  According to comments, there are numerous reports being withheld until after the election.  

Why not a Kerry ad listing them all.  Picture report after report falling on a table, showing the title and "DO NOT RELEASE UNTIL AFTER ELECTION".  A voice over:  "Agency x's report on the state of health care in America." DO NOT RELEASE UNTIL AFTER ELECTION.  "The CIA's internal report on September 11."  DO NOT RELEASE UNTIL AFTER ELECTION.

One after another.  Then the final voice-over.  "The administration has stated there is nothing classified in these reports.  They will be released.  Just not until after you have voted."

"What do these reports say?  We don't know.  But if it were anything good for Bush, don't you think he'd want you to know about it... before you vote?"

When the real world makes me crazy, I do astrology for fun... don't much believe in it, but I like it.

We are all working to get Kerry elected, but at this point the watching and waiting is getting to a lot of people.  Superstition can be comforting when you don't have all the control you would like.  So maybe people would like to know that the stars say... Kerry.

Also, I've seen so much speculation on what the hell is wrong with Bush that I thought I'd throw out what his horoscope says is wrong with him.  It's as likely to be true as half the rumors.  More below.

Election Day "Support Voting" Campaign

I'm sitting here in a non-swing state, wondering how best to help GOTV efforts.  As I was looking at registration and voting regulations for various states, I saw that in several states, one thing that can qualify you to vote absentee is working a required shift during polling hours on election day.

This got me thinking about what the real, practical obstacles to voting are for many people, and how we might overcome them.  I don't know if others are working on any of these ideas, but here we go...

OK.... I'm a Deaniac.  I was never thrilled with John Kerry, he was below Edwards, Gephart, Clark, and Mosely-Braun on my list.  But, I swear, I'm being converted in recent days.  Am I the only one?

It isn't that his record seems more attractive to me or his speaking style less grating.  It's not any new information I've seen about him or what he stands for.  It's his campaign.  These guys are. Really. Smart.  I mean, I guess they proved that when they slipped under the radar in Iowa to slap my guy back to Vermont.  But now that it's Bush, I'm beginning to see the stealth campaign they are waging for what it is.  Brilliant.

I've seen all over the diaries the last couple of days... Where's Kerry?  Where are the Dems?  They should be out there hammering BushCo.  Well IMO, Kerry is exactly where he should be.  I'll make my case...

It's 1 am here on the east coast.  I figure anyone who is, like me, still here obsessing impotently over Iowa might need a humor break.  Not to mention a little perspective.

Dave Barry's regular column is not-so-good, IMO, for the last few years, but his current events coverage still works for me... Barry on the ground in Iowa.

Will RNC convention bring Shakespearean justice to BushCo?

I've been lurking here a while, but haven't seen this discussed, so I thought I'd throw it out there...

Does anyone besides me think the cynical decision to hold the RNC convention in New York in September was a huge miscalculation on the part of the Republicans?  I think it might just be the final act of hubris that topples the administration.  New York does NOT love this president... I'm predicting an enormous backlash, one that will dominate coverage of the convention, because:

Not only are New Yorkers by and large not Republicans, but everyone I know there feels, and reports that most people feel, exploited by the president and the administration already, in using 9/11 as an excuse for Iraq and passing a ridiculously conservative agenda in their name while not delivering on actual help for the victims and families... and they are, almost irrespective of their politics otherwise, REALLY angry about it.

All conventions are protested, but the protests are usually fairly small and kept well away from the action, and they are only perfunctorily covered by the press.  In this case, however...

  1. New York is one of only a few cities with the population gravity to draw mass crowds, and the city is (see above) ready to come out for this.
  2. Many of those responsible for security at the convention, i.e. the NYPD, are likely on the protesters' side.
  3. The one thing Brokaw, Jennings and Rather, and their bosses and staff, have in common?  They are all New Yorkers.  They want to cover the New York reaction, and they probably sympathize with it.
So what do you all think... will the RNC convention be a flag-encrusted 9/11 all-American love-in?  or disaster for the Republicans?
