For a while, I've been experiencing the nagging sense that something about Karl Rove's crusade to uncover so-called "voter fraud" seemed familiar. The issue of "voter fraud" is central, the administration says, to the concern with the US Attorneys, leading to the firing of some of them this past December, and yesterday we read how Rove made this issue the theme of speeches. Today the New York Times published a front-page article headlined "In 5-Year Effort, Scant Evidence of Voter Fraud," including this paragraph:
Richard L. Hasen, an expert in election law at the Loyola Law School, agreed, saying: "If they found a single case of a conspiracy to affect the outcome of a Congressional election or a statewide election, that would be significant. But what we see is isolated, small-scale activities that often have not shown any kind of criminal intent."
I finally figured out what all this has been reminding me of!
