The Candidates on Technology

I enjoyed the article in Technology Review, which gave a synopsis of the three both candidates' policies related to six issues of technology. Both Clinton and Obama look pretty good. McCain looks pretty dumb. (Big surprise.) Read it here.
Clinton and Obama favor net neutrality; McCain discourages too much regulation of the marketplace. Obama and Clinton voted in favor of the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act; Bush doesn't want to burden corporations Americans.
Manuel Miranda damns State Dept's efforts in Iraq

I ran into this memo quite by accident, skimming through Digg earlier today. It's an incredible memo, written by a very partisan Republican lawyer. Two things strike me: (1) The U.S. mainstream media seem to have almost entirely overlooked this story, and (2) Things in Iraq are going quite badly.
It pulls no punches. The general assessment:
After a year at the Embassy, it is my general assessment that the State Department and the Foreign Service is not competent to do the job that they have undertaken in Iraq.
My first caucus experience
Sat Jan 19, 2008 at 09:16:17 PM PDT
This morning, at 11:00 a.m., my wife and I went to participate in the NV Democratic party presidential caucus. I went out of a sense of curiosity, a sense of duty, and because I wanted to support John Edwards.
First, let me say, I saw no shenanigans, but I did see a lot of confused party officials. This was the first time for a caucus in Nevada, and well, it was a little embarrassing, it was so chaotic.
More over the flip...
Sam Bodman's essay in Newsweek- A New Way Forward?
Wed Dec 27, 2006 at 03:33:49 PM PDT
U.S. Secretary of Energy, Samuel W. Bodman, has written an honest perspective on the course our country is taking towards sustainability. Well, that’s an exaggeration, but it’s more honest than anything I’ve seen come out of this White House on this issue. The article is titled "A new energy plan for America" and is published in Newsweek here. It starts off:
If we look at the global energy picture today, the challenges America faces are startling. Demand is rising rapidly and will continue to do so. And it's clear that our world is overly dependent on one source of energy: fossil fuels. For a host of reasons—related to our economic health, our environmental well-being and our national security—our current path is unsustainable. We need a safe, clean, affordable, diverse energy supply. Here are 10 ways to get there.
Below is my take on each of his 10 points.
John Ensign has to go
Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 09:51:36 PM PDT
If Jack Carter doesn't grab this one, then he deserves to lose. John Ensign, up for re-election, the man who tabled the Landrieu amendment to appropriate funds for up-to-date body armor for soldiers, seems to think that the legislative branch doesn't need authority separate from the executive branch.
