Ever wish you could set sail on the tall ships?

Ever wish you could keel haul every scurvy dog on Capitol Hill?

Ever want to burst into your local Blockbuster and demand the latest releases, a stack of blank tapes and a couple of their finest VCRrrrr's?

If you answered "yes" you might have the makings of a fine pirate. Or, maybe you would just enjoy talking like one. You're in luck! Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Started by 2 guys some years ago and popularized in columns by Dave Barry, TLAP Day is a chance to shrug off workaday life for for the adventure of the high seas... or at least to inject some fun and nautical whimsy into your workaday life. So, gather up your mates! Buckle up your Cap'n Morgan boots. Cock your hat to a jaunty angle and join in singing the official TLAP Day chantey! And, after work? Flagons of grog 'til your timbers shiver! Arrr!!!

Something for the little Kos-lets

Sat May 28, 2005 at 11:16:11 PM PDT

For the bloggers with little ones... I uploaded a new version of the LetterLane Action Game. This version has cards to draw to determine how many spaces to move. Collect multi-colored plastic juice carton caps for game pieces. Land on a letter and act out something that starts with that letter. (or, make up your own rules!) It's fun and educational... and FREE! I will link to the new version from http://www.letterlane.com as soon as I get a chance.

Dubya parody, with a little help from the Beatles

Fri May 13, 2005 at 07:36:36 PM PDT

There's been a definite Beatles theme to the titles of some of the posts at Blog for America. Yesterday, we had Carry that Weight, earlier today there was Here Comes the Sun. It was just crying out for some parodies.

Georgie Buffoon (to the tune of Rocky Raccoon)

Now somewhere in the dirt ranchin' fields down in Texas
There lived a young boy named Georgie Buffoon
And some troops his Daddy sent off to fight that Sahd'um guy.
Saddam said Daddy's gonna die. Georgie didn't like that
He said I'm gonna get that boy
So as soon as he got to town
Plannin' for a boom in the White House war-room

Accountability for Bush's "overzealous volunteers"

Tue Mar 29, 2005 at 05:44:49 PM PDT

The most recent post on Blog for America is a guest entry by Karen Bauer, Leslie Weise and Alexander Young--Denver residents who were ejected from one of  the "town hall" events Bush is holding to promote his Social Security piratization plan.

http://www.blogforamerica.com/archives/006146.html

The Secret Service revealed that we were "ID'ed" when local Republican staffers saw a bumper sticker on the car we drove which said "No More Blood For Oil." Evidently, the free speech expressed on one bumper sticker is cause enough to eject three citizens from a presidential event. (Similarly, someone was ejected from Bush's Social Security privatization event in Arizona the same day simply for wearing a Democratic t-shirt.)

Slim Shady? Phat Howard!

Mon Feb 21, 2005 at 07:06:49 AM PDT

Caught the end of "8 Mile" on VH1 last night.  Some lyrics started rattling around my head. (no comments from the peanut gallery about how much room to rattle there must be!)  I finally fleshed it out. ...To the tune of Eminem's "Lose Yourself".  Midi accompaniment is here. I don't know how many here are familiar with "Flat Howard". But, I thought it might also be appropriate now to revisit his hip-hop alter ego "Phat Howard!"

"Lose Your Mind"

Look, if you had one shot, one opportunity
To give the people the Power they need - one Movement
Would you grab the Power - or give it away?

Thoughts on Democratic issues, values, and frames

Wed Jan 19, 2005 at 09:30:35 PM PDT

I've been following some of the discussions about "framing" lately. On the one hand, many Democrats  are convinced that better framing is just what we need in order to start winning elections again. But there others feel like it's just the latest fad and will only serve to distract us. Earlier today, on Blog for America, someone commented that  Bush did not have to rely on framing to win the 2004 election, because he could run on his performance in his four years in office.

The way I see it, framing is exactly what made people think Bush's first term was anything other than a complete disaster - not his actual accomplishments. They didn't call it the "Extended Access for Logging Companies Act". They called it the "Healthy Forests Initiative". They don't call it Empire Building. They call it "Spreading Democracy". They call everything they do exactly the opposite of what it actually is. This is how they use framing. And, they have used it very effectively.

The Doctor went down to Georgia (Parody)

Tue Jan 11, 2005 at 09:18:31 AM PDT

Last night on Blog for America, the Georgia on His Mind entry started like this:

"The Doctor went down to Georgia, he was lookin' for a party to save "

At 4:21 a.m. (!) Renee wrote:

"I just caught the first line of this post. I bet somebody is doing to do a version of this song if I put the lyrics up. Just the sort of thing people do around here" and posted the lyrics

Of course, I can never pass up a challenge.  So, I wrote this:

Kerry's mideast trip--good idea?

Wed Jan 05, 2005 at 10:11:43 AM PDT

moon in the house of moe commented about Kerry's "fact finding" trip to Iraq, which will have him out of the country when Conyers et. al. make their challenge tomorrow.

http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2005/1/5/84732/37166/100#100

One could say he should do a little fact finding in his own country, but actually it's smart. Others need to object to the election here while he goes about his business examing the wreckage in Iraq which is high profile and presidential.

My thoughts:

Kerry had better be darned impressive on this world tour.  If the Congressional Black Caucus once again calls for a challenge to Bush's "election" and Kerry is AWOL as a senator to support them it will not be good for him.
