Take a Break & Smile

Thu May 25, 2006 at 02:57:44 PM PDT

This was sent to me by a middle of the road type of guy.  Who Knows, it may be more accurate than we want to think.

Ok, This is time to take a break diary.  Check it out, put your headphones on and listen from the start.  It's from Walt Handelsman (Newsday): Called "No place like home".  You may not agree with the politics but funny is Good!

Help me Frame & Develop a Wedge Issue

Mon Apr 10, 2006 at 07:09:06 PM PDT

I could use some help in defining some wedge issues.  I'm going to be giving a speech to a club I belong to that has Dems and Repubs.  I use these speeches to see what talking points seem to work.

I'm in a conservative area, Repubs outnumber Dems.  The tactic I have been working to develop is to make the conservatives doubt their Dear Leader.

Lately, I've come (stumbled is more like it) upon the theme of "this ain't Eisenhower's Republican Party" anymore (or something to that effect).

Using this as a spring board, I need some examples of what conservative values espoused by Eisenhower Republicans just don't hold water in today's Neo-con world.  Using some themes like this I seem to be getting a response from the moderate conservatives in the audience.  I'm trying to have a cohesive package together by next month for candidates to chew over.

Thanks for the time and I'd appreciate it if you would recommend this for a day so it doesn't spin off of the front page in 30 minutes or less.

Perkins Opts out of Nevada Governor's Race

Thu Sep 22, 2005 at 12:57:09 AM PDT

Cross Psoted at MyDD with minor edits

In what could be a very positive development for Democrats in Nevada, State Assembly leader Richard Perkins has announced his decision not to seek the Democratic Nomination for Governor.

His decision leaves two Democrats in the race, Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, who has made her formal announcement, and Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, who is expected to make his announcement soon.

Titus, a popular State Senator from the Las Vegas area, has been appearing at almost any function since before last May, making no secret that she wanted to run for Governor.  She has been working the rural areas extensively since shortly after the last special legislative session when she made her formal announcement.  Titus has the grassroots support needed to be a successful candidate.  She is trying to follow the mold of the popular former Governor and Senator Richard Bryan.

Freep this Bush Vacation Poll!!

Thu Aug 25, 2005 at 06:54:54 PM PDT

"Do you think President Bush has taken too much vacation time?"  Go to KOLO TV in Reno, Nevada.", and put your 2 cents in.  It's on the right hand side below the fold.  Right now it's 60/40 against... but I figure the R's will be freeping it too...

Let Harry feel the love we have for the Prez's time off with this local poll.

Tempers Flare in Judiciary Committee Dust-up

Sun Jun 12, 2005 at 09:57:51 PM PDT

Just when you thought that the Republcians could sink no further to strangle the freedom of speech, I read this shining example of Republician Arrogrance from The Hill.

A House Judiciary Committee hearing on the renewal of the Patriot Act turned ugly this morning after Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) gaveled the proceedings to a close over the objections of Democrats.

Democrats continued to make statements and witnesses continued to offer testimony even after Sensenbrenner had left the room. C-SPAN cameras were still rolling as the committee's majority staff rushed to turn off microphones and lights on the Democrats, prompting the television crews to break out boom mikes.

Now is the time to hang together, before...

Thu Apr 07, 2005 at 08:50:08 AM PDT

they hang us seperately.

The latest plea from the Harry Reid and the Democrats is here.

This is a petition to stop the GOPers nuclear option, by eliminating the filabuster.  This, more than any other action the GOPers have attempted, strikes at the heart of Our Country's Democratic process.

I equate the GOPers betrayal of this valuable, venerable process on a par with the betrayal of Benedict Arnold to George Washington and Our fledgling Country.

Now is the time for united action.

The vote is coming up soon, very soon. Overwhelm the opposition with our opinion.

Please send some good mojo to keep our attention focused.

Please help stop the Vast Right Wing Opportunistic Cabal!

Rep. Gibbons Can't Have an Original Thought

Thu Mar 03, 2005 at 05:03:18 PM PDT

To carry on the Gobbons Foot-in-Mouth saga.  We find out that Gibbons plagiarized most of his speech in Elko.

From the Elko Daily Free Press

ELKO - The speech delivered by U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., during Friday night's Lincoln Day Dinner in Elko was largely plagiarized from a copyrighted speech by Alabama State Auditor Beth Chapman.

Chapman told the Elko Daily Free Press this morning Gibbons had not requested permission to use her speech, which she said she delivered Feb. 2, 2003, at a Stand Up for America rally in Alabama.

She said Gibbons apologized today for using large portions of her speech.

Harry Speaks out locally

Sun Feb 13, 2005 at 11:30:09 AM PDT

In keeping connected with the grassroots, Harry Reid has not forgotten the people back home.  Taking the time to write the Local Reno, Nv. Newspaper with his view of Social Security.

First, Social Security is not a handout:

Social Security is not a handout. It is a benefit that senior citizens earn by working and paying into the system.

Second, What good has been brought about by Social Security.

If not for Social Security, that figure would be about 50 percent. Social Security is the only source of income for one-fifth of seniors. The program also is critically important for disabled Americans, and for millions of children of workers who die.

Next, There is no crisis.  This is not to say that the system can't be improved.

Social Security faces long-term challenges, but, contrary to some claims, it is not in crisis. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, it will be able to fully meet future obligations for almost 50 years, and then still will be able to pay higher benefits than are provided today. Yet the program does face long-term challenges that we need to address.

Framing the Electorial Debate

Thu Jan 06, 2005 at 11:27:46 AM PDT

Some things I really want to see:

CNN has currently been taken by suprise, they have no idea of what to do, except report.

Now is the time to strike back at the SCLM by asking them a deceptively simple question.

WHY WERE YOU NOT ON THE STORY OF ELECTION IRREGULARTIES?  Where did you fall down in your investigative duties?  Why is this such a suprise to you?

I Strongly encourage the Online Community to write, and ask these questions.  Oh, by the way, what other issues have you overlooked by the Morally Bankrupt Republicians.

Hopefully, using these frames, we can start the shift in the SCLM from a Republican Mouthpiece to a renewal of a source for independent NEWS, not Republician propaganda.

I plan on writing my local paper, demanding why I was suprised by this and why haven't they reported on this beforehand.

(shameless plea)
If you like this idea, please recomend.
(end of shameless plea)

Ground Game - Battleground Nevada

Sat Oct 16, 2004 at 09:36:09 PM PDT

Round One:  Early (in person) voting opened in Nevada today.  Our ground effort looks decent.  The Registar's (Washoe County) office had a 90 Minute line all day long.  Mostly the dedicated and those who will be elsewhere on Nov. 2.

From those waiting in line, it looked like there were a fair amount of Kerry Supporters there to vote.  The county registar was the only place open for early voting today.

Unofficial Estimates from those involved think that about 800 people were able to vote today.  Starting Monday, other polling places open up across the county.

Looks like we carried round one.  However, everyone here expects a hard Wingnut counterpunch starting Monday.  They have always seemed to be better with the mail in vote too.  It's going to be a long couple of weeks....

Anyone nearby who wants to help out, just call the organization of your choice.  We still need the help.

What a Marathon!

Anyone know what's happening in the South (Las Vegas)?

The Next Wingnut Attack Outline Here.

Thu Sep 30, 2004 at 11:06:47 PM PDT

If you think this has merit, please recommend it.  I don't like asking for this, but the sheer volume of posts here gives a very short life span to a diary entry. Unless it is recommended.

Your mission should you decide to accept it:
Reading this from PoliPundit, A Consertative Blog.  I get the impression that the Freepers will focus on three things in the following days.  Look for these themes and get ready to slice and dice them NOW:

First theme: Kerry is veague

Who Won the Debate .... Kerry made some mistakes, .... by bringing up Domestic Policy several times, and by refusing to answer repeated requests for specific actions he proposes. (emphysis here mine) That won't help John.

Second Theme: Minimalization

Was anyone's mind changed? Starting with the obvious, while a lot of people said they would watch, I don't think very many people stayed there for all 90 minutes. That helps Kerry for his quick start, but the fact that he couldn't make salient points (emphysis here mine) is not good for changing minds. That is, the Bush people still are going to support the President, and the Kerry core will still be with Kerry. Nothing was said that would change the bases on each side. Of the undecideds, Kerry only gained some who were leaning to him anyway. If the election were Saturday, Kerry would gain some points, but he didn't do what he needs to, to keep them.

Again the minor theme of Veague here.

Third theme: Nothing Memorable

What will be remembered from this debate?
Not much. Kerry couldn't make his chances into anything serious, and Bush couldn't prove Kerry an idiot. The internals for Kerry will rise a bit, but not too much, because all Kerry did was say what he has said before. He refused to stake a specific position, (emphysis mine) and that is never a good plan.

This is also the third way they have said veague.

How to Kill the Flip Flop Question.

Sat Sep 25, 2004 at 09:14:52 AM PDT

To kill the Flip Flop Question, you must redirect the focus to Bush's own 'Decisive & Stay the Course' theme.

The easiest way to do this is to take Bush's words and compare them to a disaster.  The first comparison that comes to mind of someone who was a decisive and unmoving leader, unable to adapt is George Custer (the guy who lost a small creek called Little Big Horn).

Bush is doing for the Army what Custer did for the 7th Cav.

Imagine a comercial with Bush's words about being decisive, unflinching, and moving stright ahead playing to pictures of burning HumVees, Soldiers in combat (and dying), all to the undercurrent of the tune "Gary Owen" so loved by Custer.

It's time to use imagery to paint Bush into the corner he has put himself into.

Anyone have any better ideas?

Bush Ads

Wed Aug 18, 2004 at 05:32:02 AM PDT

Living in a battleground state (Northern Nevada) I am being innudated with the Bush Ads.  However, I just noticed something with the latest.

The Republician theme has just jelled into two areas.  1) Flip Fop, and 2) Says one thing yet does another. (a variant on the flip flop).

I know from local personal experience that these ads are attracting the attention of some undicideds.

Question, How does one counter/debunk these ads and concepts in 30 Sec or less?  I guess I am looking for that elusive sound bite that puts the onus on Bush.
