In addition to making a fool of himself (again), he undercut the arguments of "ID" advocates who claim with a straight face that their theory is "scientific" and not dressed-up Creationism. After all, if "ID" was really about science and not religion, why would Robertson suggest God was angry at the voters?
Robertson is not the first prominent "ID" backer to stray from the movement's talking points. William Buckingham -- the Dover school board member who led the effort to inject "ID" into science classes and was among those booted out -- once cried out in defense of "ID" at a board meeting: "Two thousand years ago somebody died on a cross. Can't someone take a stand for Him?"
