There is a scenario wherein the Republicans could pull out a (stolen) victory without getting the votes. Question is, how do we keep it from happening?
OK..this is a super short diary, but wouldn't you feel silly if you were a super-blogger-diarist-political-kossian-pundit, and then forgot to register to vote? (Kinda like what Limbaugh did for years.)
I love reading writers who can, in a few words, say everything I was feeling and yet educate and stimulate me at the same time. Krugman's recent article is absolutely brilliant, because it's so eloquent, concise, and on-the-nose.
As a native Iowan, it seems to me that Republican Jim Leach is nearly an institution there. I'm not very politically savvy, but my feeling is that he tries to come across as moderate, or center of the road, but in fact he's only moderate when it's not very important. You know the kind.
I wrote this on my little blog. I'm just reposting it here, in the evening so as not to waste valuable day-time reading. For you kossacks, I'm really not telling you anything you don't know, and someone may have already diaried about this. I'm pretty much just yakking at myself here. However, feel free to comment. Thanks.
For those of you unfamiliar with George Will, he's a very popular "conservative" pundit/columnist, and generally has high following among Republicans. He's all over the place, in the papers and on TV. Supposedly he's brilliant. I personally find him a bit annoying, with his over-use of large words that few people know.
Much is written on kos about Walmart. Generally, I've come to learn it is the source of much evil. Indeed, there seems to be at least one diarist who writes constantly on how horrible Walmart is to our society. One time I made a suggestion in another anti-Walmart diary that although Walmart is likely a negative force in many ways, the company may have a coupla good points. I was nearly drowned in anger and troll-ratings. Fun times.
So, if Walmart is so rotten (and even I think it is generally kinda rotten, at least), then help me find alternatives. Shop for me on the flip.
Have any of you received this email, showing pictures of various levees in Europe? If so, or if this has been diaried before, then I apologize. Otherwise, I thought this interesting.
I was channel flipping and caught the local debate over Proposal 622, a proposal in Indianpolis to stop discrimination based upon sexual orientation. I watched, and I contacted my reps. Here's what went down. (This was just before Christmas, for you locals. I'm just slow to diary about it.)
In December, U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security Democratic Staff issued a report detailing 33 promises made by DHS (Dept Homeland Security) since 2002 that have gone unfulfilled. Interesting reading. (Emphasis mine.)
Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes.
Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
Many Americans are fighting mad. And no, we're not afraid of Osama Bin Laden or his kind. We don't believe that any person or country outside of America can bring America to its knees if the talent and goodness in America prevails. We don't think there is any problem too big that we cannot fix. We still have a lot of pride in ourselves and know that we Americans are a talented group of people.
But what we fighting for is our way of life, which is being attacked from within. And we need your help. We helped you in two World Wars. We have helped your countries in times of famine and disaster. Yes, we've made many many arrogant mistakes for which we can only ask forgiveness, but we've also been there for you at times. Now we need your help.
Just wanted to mention a discussion I had with a Republican tonight while out running. It's neverendlingly frustrating to listen to Republicans, I tell you. A bit on what we talked about regarding Iraq and Iran, and unions.
We have two specific cases where Republicans are definitely caught disrepecting (to put it mildly) groups of people they supposedly support. Are there other cases, and can Democrats make this a major talking point?
