Is CodePink Helping? (poll)
Wed Oct 24, 2007 at 04:07:56 PM PDT
This will be a short diary because I am more interested in the feeling of the DailyKos community than in discussing my own thoughts on the matter.
In light of the arrests of three CodePink members at a Congressional hearing today, I wanted to poll the community on the usefullness of this type of civil disobedience. So, please let me know what you think...
Who among you will be the Christ?
Tue May 22, 2007 at 11:37:54 AM PDT
America has been made aware of the barbaric practice of 'honor killings' by the publication of a shaky, grainy but heartbreakingly graphic video of seventeen year old Dua Khalil Aswad. She was beaten and stoned to death by a crowd of neighbors and family members, all of them male, for the crime of being seen with a Sunni man that they believe she had married. This has already been diaried exceptionally well by Kossack exmearden here and by one of my favorite TV creators Joss Whedon.
What this terrible incident illustrates is part of the vast cultural gap that lies between typical Americans and typical Iraqis. In this gap resides concepts of tribalism, misogyny and religiosity that the West tried, and mostly succeeded, to leave behind years ago. And I, in all of my athieistic glory, attribute at least part of this growth to the stories of Jesus Christ.
Framing The Iraq Study Group
Wed Oct 25, 2006 at 11:14:38 AM PDT
The
Iraq Study Group (ISG; aka 'The Baker Commission') was formed in March of 2006 and is scheduled to release its report, The Iraq Study Group Report (aka 'The Baker Report'), immediately following the November 2006 midterm elections. This has been diaried
here and
here . It ought to be clear to everybody that this panel is merely a face-saving way for the Bush administration to do exactly what the Democrats have been advising for over a year. Richard Gwyn of the Toronto Star
puts it nicely when he says,
The Republicans face serious losses in the mid-term elections. Any hint that they might have a plan to get out of Iraq while holding onto some honour might save them from a rout.
It is vital that we get out in front of what is being orchestrated and make it very clear what is happening.

CT-Sen: Green Party seeks talk with Lamont
Tue Aug 15, 2006 at 11:33:38 AM PDT
This diary is an expansion of a comment I made to an open thread.
On the local NPR affiliate this morning they were interviewing Ralph Ferrucci, the Green party candidate for CT-Sen. At the very end of the program he was asked if he would endorse Lamont and he said that he was open to talking with him and throwing himself behind Lamont if they came to agreement on certain issues.
I see this as a positive sign and a strategic opportunity but I haven't really thought through the politics of it. I was hoping to get some pros/cons from the people here.

Vote Terrapin! CT For Lieberman Party
Wed Aug 09, 2006 at 01:27:31 PM PDT
Crowd cheers...whistles...A call for silence.
Thank you! Yes! Thank you!
Please! Really, thanks!
You know, it has been an exciting experience seeing all this energy being pumped into this great party! It has been said that our party, 'Connecticut For Lieberman', had grown old and tired. That it had been taken over by those who would rather scold their own than fight what is wrong with America. Well, I am hear to tell you that 'Connecticut for Lieberman' is no longer irrelevant and with your help I plan to make it a party that we can all be proud of!
Words drowned out by cheers...Banners waving wildly.
Regarding Hillary; comments needed...

The purpose of this diary is to discuss HRC specifically and Centrist Dems in general. The main point of the discussion is to try to maintain a cohesive, motivated Liberal/Progressive/Democratic electorate despite the divisiveness surrounding HRC. This diary is biased towards the idea that the Democrats are the true big tent party if we can remember to keep the flaps open and let people in.
Keep in mind that Joe Lieberman is EXCLUDED from this discussion because he has taken a much more active role against his party than HRC or the typical centrist dem.
An election falsely won
Sun Dec 18, 2005 at 08:40:41 AM PDT
Another aspect of the NSA wiretap scandal is that the NYT sat on that story for 'about a year' before publishing it. Somebody on a conservative blog was trying to get worked up over the timing of the release being immediately after relatively peaceful elections in Iraq. This, of course, misses the point that if the story had been broken in real time it would have occurred before American elections! I firmly believe that this administration with the help of the MSM won the elections under false pretenses.
Progressive Communications Strategy
Wed Dec 14, 2005 at 10:17:05 AM PDT
I wanted to point people to this thread because I did not want the conversation to die out. I feel that some of the issues raised are vital to organizing ourselves and exploiting the problems that the Republicans are causing for themselves. Here is the link:
http://www.dailykos.com/...
Many people may have problems discussing issues of 'branding' because it smacks of selling yourself as something you are not in order to get votes. Let me be absolutely clear about one thing: I am not advocating the misrepresentation of Progressive Values in order to get votes. What I am talking about is the accurate communication of what the party is about in order to combat the inaccurate caricature of the Left that the Republicans have spent 25 years creating.
Defining a Progressive Iraq Withdrawal Strategy
Wed Nov 23, 2005 at 07:02:42 AM PDT
To be sure, the successful conclusion to the Iraq War is something that every voter in 2006 and 2008 desires. Speaking to this desire ought to be a priority for the progressive movement. Therefore I was thrilled to read a blog by Bryan Lentz who had first hand experience in Iraqi reconstruction.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...
Mr. Lentz is also running for congress:
http://www.lentzforcongress.com/
His blog outlined two specific problems with reconstruction and two constructive solutions that can be implemented as part of a Progressive Platform.

Where to celebrate/conspire in D.C.???
Wed Nov 09, 2005 at 10:45:49 AM PDT
I will be traveling to D.C. next week. This is one of my rare opportunities to get to the city and I was hoping to work out a list of hip, happening hang-outs. So, where does the progressive blogging establishment like to hoist a few?
I am open to all types of suggestions (although I am hoping there is at least one good place for crab). Martini bars, brew pubs, Goth clubs (so that I can catch Cheney giving interrogation demonstrations). Hopefully the locals can help me avoid anything touristy.
And maybe slip in a neo-con liar so I can see if I can infiltrate. ;)
Plus has anybody stopped by any of these places like Media Matters? Are they open for the random visitor?
Any suggestions appreciated!
