Fantasy and Politics meet at last! well again at anyrate

Tue Aug 28, 2007 at 05:10:39 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm writing a fantasy politics blog.  It's a simple idea really.  Much of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis influence was World War II.  So my inspiration is the Bush years.  I have two posts up already, but I wanted a suggestion from you all, for a character in the third post.

I need the name of a liberal, who, at the beginning of the Bush years '00 was smashed utterly, by the media, and or politically, for protesting against the farcical election that saw Gore defeated.  A bit of the story about that person would be great too.

I'm trying to stick close to actual events and characters so that I don't

I just got my Glenn Greenwald Book!

Thu Jun 28, 2007 at 07:54:03 AM PDT

I remember how excited I was the day I got my Daily Kos T-shirt, (see my diary), and now again, thrilled by my new book.  Too bad I'm at work and can't read it now!

Hacking my way through hacks (a rant)

Tue Jun 19, 2007 at 09:15:08 AM PDT

God!  I'm so sick of the rhetoric!  Like all of you, I'm lining up our political candidates, trying to observe and learn about the best one to pick for the primary.  I'd always been a fan of Hillary.  She seemed familiar with the hard-hitting real-politik of American politics.  The type of person who can handle a shit storm and come out looking and smelling good.  God knows, she and Bill have done so already.  But again, we all remember the Hillary haters.  A simple google search on Hillary comes up with thousands of hits slamming her and Bill.  I left her camp, thinking pragmatically, the Gore haters are still out there and Gore isn't even in the race, what's the point of backing a losing candidate.

I used to like blondes

Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 06:24:04 PM PDT

This is a fluff diary.  If you're looking for information stop here.

I was thinking the other day, (my girlfriend, bless her soul, knows this already) how I used to eye every blonde on the subway, street, theatre or otherwise.  I was, blinded by the blondes.

Army of One (Morning War Poetry)

Tue Mar 13, 2007 at 06:05:40 AM PDT

I'm no poet.

A C&L post this morning got me thinking...that's all.

Endorse this, Kos!

Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 10:34:06 AM PDT

Kos wrote a diary today detailing his policy on advertisement.  It was very thoughtful, and very logical--but I disagree with it whole heartedly.

Here's why...

AP HIT PIECE ON REID

Tue Oct 17, 2006 at 07:08:18 AM PDT

Kos pointed out a few days ago another John Solomon piece defaming Reid.  This time pointing out that Reid supposedly netted over a million dollars on a Las Vegas property.

And TPM Muckraker here:

Now there's a new "scandal" and it involves Harry Reid apparently giving campaign money to his campaign staff to throw a holiday party.  About 3 grand.  Here's the story

My Girlfriend's Healthcare Nightmare

Tue Sep 05, 2006 at 06:44:44 AM PDT

Almost every night this weekend, and many nights before this, going all the way back into March, I have watched my girlfriend cry herself to sleep -- convulsing in pain.  She has no healthcare.  I have no healthcare.  We are barely making bank on normal expenses.  Sometimes, I am so filled with rage I can barely breathe.  I'd like to put my fist through this monitor, throw it out the twentieth floor window of my office building.

Please Don't Include me in Your Prayers

Wed Jun 28, 2006 at 11:08:13 AM PDT

It's not that I don't appreciate the sentiment.  The fact that you care means a lot to me.  It does.  But it's that I don't appreciate the form of sentiment.  I'm an atheist right?  Even were I not an atheist, I would think the kingdom of God isn't a democracy.  It doesn't matter if forty million people send a prayer to God for my benefit, or if one, namely myself sent a prayer.  He chooses to answer for his own inexplicable reasons.  Sometimes not--point is, blessings and prayers I need not.  Shows of solidarity are a different story.

NYT Magazine: Jack Carter Interview

Sun Jun 25, 2006 at 01:29:44 PM PDT

I was glad to see that Jack Carter was getting some press in the New York Times Magazine, until I saw who was covering him.  Deborah Solomon.  Ohhh, I suppose she isn't too bad, but what a waste of time.  Her interview with Harvard professor Harvey Mansfield wasn't too bad. But her interview with Noam Chomsky was vaguely embarassing.  This 'maverick' journalist seems to be a professional waste of time.

I got my DailyKos T-Shirt in the Mail

Fri Jun 23, 2006 at 08:15:32 AM PDT

It came!  It came!  It came!

What you ask?  National healthcare?  Withdrawal from Iraq? Courageous Congressmen?  Well, I suppose Congressmen are coming all the time, but that's another story.

I ordered it on Monday and it's here already, it's large, green, with a big splash of orange emlblazened across the front.  THat's right, it's my pride -- and I have it again.

Class Action Giant Gets Served

Thu May 18, 2006 at 01:28:46 PM PDT

Sort of surprised that no one seems to have caught this.  And for the record, I'm a novice in the law--though I do have some privileged information.  There will be a press-conference in an hour or so to hand down an indictment on the largest class action firm in the United States.  Milberg Weiss.  Though it might be true that many tort and class action law firms are sharks, looking for any blood in the water, than slicing a third of the fees for itself--but Milberg is actually a pretty GOOD lawfirm as far as they go.  The evidence we know about is based solely on the testimony of two convicted criminals.  So I ask the DailyKOS, what do we think?  Is MW a firm of crooks?  Or are they the victim of a government out to defend big business?

The Second Coming. W.B. Yeats

Thu Apr 27, 2006 at 09:41:26 AM PDT

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all convictions, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

W.B. Yeats 'The Second Coming' has been on my mind recently.  I last encountered the poem while reading Stephen Kings apocalyptic novel, 'The Stand.'  The lines, "The falcon cannot hear the falconer; things fall apart; the centre cannot hold," were penned by the colonel, whose hubris and negligence allowed a superflue to be unleashed on the world.  The first half of the novel takes typical 1980s America and turns it into a wasteland of decaying corpses and paramilitary groups vying over the last pickings of industry.  I think of it now, and have been over the last few months.  Now, when we stand at what may be the fulcrum in American, excuse me, United States history, the apocrayphal lines, "Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold," call out to be redressed.

Family Breaking Over Immigration

Mon Apr 10, 2006 at 02:01:01 PM PDT

I have a sad story which has been a long time developing, and just got sadder three weekends ago.  My Dad and I are uber liberal, my mom roosevelt liberal, my older sister plain conservative, my younger sister vaguely liberal.  My older brother, I should add, significantly older brother has gone off the deep end.

I couldn't believe my ears

Sun Mar 12, 2006 at 11:12:18 AM PDT

So, stuck in a transitless NYC.  Unlike many of the whities, I don't have a problem with this.  Sure it sucks.  Sure I'm not making any money this week.  BUt it's one more excuse, (which I probably didn't need) to stay home and sit on my ass.  I've been following the thing on the news pretty exhaustively.  And also on my new favorite website, thedailykos.com.  Since even the times is painting an awful picture of these poor transit workers.  And then, just last night, at the bar which is my home, I heard the most awful thing--and it really drove home--just what this is all about.

An Old Platform for a New Year

Mon Jan 02, 2006 at 07:38:00 AM PDT

I believe....

Our federal, state and local governments shall be proactive in nurturing and protecting its citizens.  The federal government has a duty and responsibility to each and every one of its peoples in this regard:  That none be allowed to fall to the wayside, that no citizen is expendable in the cause of a "greater good," that no freedom entitled to any such person, be waived under any circumstance.

Our federal, state and local governments shall assure the protection of its citizens from foreign invasion and terrorism but shall refrain from preemptive warfare or provocative engagement in the affairs of other nations without the consent and support of the United Nations Security Council.
