Caliente's not so hot: NYC restaurant refuses to apologize for ejecting black lesbian
Sun Jul 29, 2007 at 11:49:20 AM PDT
In the past few weeks, MPetrelis in a diary and EddieC in a comment have alluded to the unfortunate incident last month at a Manhattan restaurant called Caliente Cab Company. Here's a fuller description of what happened, what's been done in response so far, why IMHO it matters, and what you can do to help.
Feminisms: Speaking Truth to...Family?
Wed Nov 22, 2006 at 06:47:59 PM PDT
So...when I signed up to be this week's Feminisms diarist, I didn't piece together that this was Thanksgiving week. So Wednesday night has rolled around, and I'm rather exhausted from a day spent grocery shopping, cooking, and yakking with my mother (whom I hadn't seen in a number of months). But I think I can parlay the whole home-for-the-holidays thing into a platform or springboard for feminist discussion...y'all be the judges.
how 'boycotting' is like 'dieting'
Sat Oct 29, 2005 at 01:52:42 PM PDT
this deviation from my usual cynicism is a spin-off from Lode Runner's
popular diary, "Let the Boycotts Begin."
reading the discussion of whether it's better to focus on the positive or the negative, i was reminded of the public service announcements currently up around my city, telling you that for weight loss and healthier-eating purposes, it's better to focus on what you want to eat more of rather than what you need to eat less of. when i see those ads, my mind goes immediately to "fresh local produce" -- and that's also an area where i'm currently seeking to improve the political and ecological footprint of my consumer habits. but it was noted in the comments, some people find proscription (a specific list of what not to eat/do) easier to remember and stick by. anyway, some parallels between choosing how to eat and choosing how to buy:
LGBT Groups Formally Oppose Roberts
Thu Aug 25, 2005 at 12:24:05 PM PDT
This morning, four national LGBT rights organizations [announced their opposition] to the John Roberts Supreme Court nomination. The groups are the
Human Rights Campaign, the
National Center for Lesbian Rights, the
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and
PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).
"For his entire adult life, John Roberts has been a disciple of and promoted a political and legal ideology that is antithetical to an America that embraces all, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people," said Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. "He has denigrated the nature and scope of the constitutional rights to privacy, equal protection and due process as well as federal government's role in confronting injustice. I have no doubt he's an accomplished lawyer and an affable dinner companion, but that doesn't make him any less a mortal danger to equal rights for gay people, reproductive freedom and affirmation [sic] action."

The Schwarzenegger Amendment: Why I'm in favor
Mon Nov 15, 2004 at 08:16:12 PM PDT
I wrote this in slightly different format for another forum, but in light of abujams' post/poll yesterday, it seemed worth reposting.
Please be nice/constructive, I'm a diary virgin.
I used to teach elementary school in California...about half of my students were
first-generation Mexican immigrants (and a few from other nations).
