Salon Yawn

Fri Mar 11, 2005 at 02:48:21 PM PDT

I've been a subscriber to Salon since 1996 and felt good about it not only for supporting alternative, on-line media but because of the rich, satisfying content they have always provided.

During the last year, I've found that some mornings I simply forget to click on Salon because there are so many good blogs to read. Then, when I do remember to check them out, I discover that most of the articles and essays are simple rehashes of stuff I read on a blog days before.

Anger and Despair

Mon Dec 20, 2004 at 09:02:27 AM PDT

I can't stop being angry. Before the election, I counted bumper stickers on my way to work and back home. I swear there were not so many W stickers back then as there are now. I believe these cowards put on the stickers after they knew their man had "won." Every time I see one of them, a flicker of near hatred springs up in the pit of my stomach and I think, How could you be so stupid or selfish or fearful or ignorant or whatever their excuse may be?

I've been thinking about making little stickers about an inch high by six inches long with the message "SHAME ON YOU!" I imagine how I could slap them across the W's and Bush/Cheney's so quickly as to not be detected by the video cameras aimed at the grocery store parking lot. It might even be days or weeks before the driver even notices this addition on the back of their car. I am feeling so powerless that these fantasies of snarky vandalism seem my only recourse.

ATTN: Atlanta Kossacks, Zell Protest Op

Wed Dec 15, 2004 at 10:28:36 AM PDT

This Saturday, December 18th, at 2:30pm Zell Miller will be signing copies of his book at the Chapter 11 bookstore on Holcomb Bridge Road in Norcross.

This seems like a good opportunity to stand nearby waving a big "Go to Hell, Zell!" sign. Or, perhaps, someone else has a more creative idea...

How many of you will be available and inclined to let Mad Dog Zell know what we think of him? Let's coordinate below in comments...

My Repub Father Laughs at Me

Thu Nov 18, 2004 at 07:13:32 PM PDT

Tonight I called my father for the first time since the election. I listened patiently during his tales of woe re: recovering from two hurricanes in a six week period. Then, I broached the reason for my call -- namely the fact that my husband's job ends on March 31st, 2005 and we are desparately seeking a relocation with the same company. I started by saying, "Pop, the reason I called was to let you know that we are going thru a difficult transition..." At which point, he said, "Ah, the election! YOU LOST! Your guy lost! Bwahahahahaha!" I immediately shouted over his laughter, "How vulgar! How completely disgusting! Have you no shame! I'm trying to tell you that my husband is LOSING his job and you're gloating like a school yard bully about your IGNORANT vote!" I had to yell, my husband is losing his job a couple of times before I got thru the gales of laughter...

Clinton's UN Dream Job?

Sat Oct 23, 2004 at 06:23:04 AM PDT

Last night I caught the tail-end of Matthew's horse race show and all of Countdown. On both shows, large blocks of time were devoted to the idea that Clinton wants to head the UN and that a Kerry presidency would facilitate that ambition.  I'm surprised I haven't seen a diary about this. Scanning the MSNBC web site this morning, I find no mention of this "story." Searching google news, brings up disturbing sources...

300,000 New Georgia Voters!

Fri Oct 01, 2004 at 01:25:01 PM PDT

ATLANTA (AP) -- About 300,000 new voters have registered so far this year in Georgia. That's a 50 percent increase over the last presidential election.

Billmon, Lost At Sea?

Sat Sep 18, 2004 at 03:51:39 PM PDT

Back on August 15th, Billmon said he was going off on a boat for a week or two. It's now been over a month and I'm concerned about his continued absence. Does anyone here know him? Can anyone tell me that he's okay?

I really miss his insights. I know he was starting to burn out on blogging and maybe he's gotten used to not writing and having a "real life." If so, that's okay. But, I'd like to know that he's alright.

Edwards in Atlanta -- Tomorrow!

Sun Aug 15, 2004 at 06:41:36 AM PDT

In a diary yesterday, I asked Edwards to come to Georgia and - damn! - this morning I got an email from Georgia for Kerry-Edwards with this link

http://www.johnkerry.com/events/081604_atlanta_form.php

There appears to be no announcement in the ajc or local news websites regarding this event. With only one day's advance warning, it's going to be hard to whip up thousands of supporters to turn out on a Monday afternoon at a convention center out by the airport.  This might turn out to be an intimate little gathering where I get to actually shake the hand of our next vice president! (har)

I plan on taking MARTA down to the airport and grabbing a cab to shuttle me thru  traffic to the site.  Be there or be square, you know. ;)

Red State Blues

Sat Aug 14, 2004 at 08:14:56 AM PDT

Being in Georgia, I have despaired - no bus tours by Kerry for us, no Edwards speaking from the back of a pick-up truck here, no Boss concert in the Phillips Arena. Sad and despised, Dems in Georgia have been tossed into the Repub dustbin of lost causes. It's hard to rally the vote when you feel you are clearly in the minority and besides, Diebold will eat your vote anyway. But then, I came across this press release from the GA Dem Party...

A Letter from the Bush/Cheney'04 Campaign!

Mon May 10, 2004 at 04:14:34 PM PDT

Our postman was probably quite confused today when he delivered a big envelope for the Bush/Cheney'04 campaign and a standard envelope from the Kerry'04 campaign to the same address. He might have stood there for a moment thinking, this is one of those divided households where the husband is for Bush and the wife is for Kerry; I really like the wife, she is always so nice to me when we meet.

The bumper stickers I requested were in the Kerry envelope and the Bush out-reach, entirely unsolicited,  was heavy with the assumption of support. I mean, seriously heavy as in extremely expensive with personalized laser flourishes. Indeed, the outside announced, "DO NOT BEND! PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO ENCLOSED." Inside was a full color photo of Bush and Laura down on the ranch with the presumptuous message, "To: (full name), Thank you for your early commitment and dedication as a Charter Member of the campaign in Georgia. Grassroots leaders like you are the key to building a winning team. Best Wishes, (printed signatures) Laura Bush (nice penmanship, Laura) and something that looks like Ayw open B-l (gawd! The man can't even scrawl his initials!).

Also enclosed was a letter from Marc Racicot, also full of presumptive insider-ness, that claimed the Kerry campaign has raised "hundreds of millions of dollars" from "liberal special interest groups" and he just knows we want to send "$1,000... or whatever you can afford... to help reach out to other grassroots leaders like you." And last, but not least, was a postage paid reply envelope with the message, "Your 1st Class Stamp is an added gift!" O, how I cackled with glee! Inside, we sent the following message:

Dear Marc Racicot,

Thank you so much for the personalized photo of Bush and Laura - we needed a new dart board. I don't know how you got the idea that we would be interested in supporting someone who has made a mockery of America's honor by misleading our country. As a Viet Nam Vet, I feel no love for your draft-dodging, AWOL Reservist candidate. I do really appreciate the postage paid reply envelope so that I can tell you to remove my name from your database. Come November, if there is truly a God in Heaven, Bush will be sent back to Crawford by a landslide Kerry victory and you should also be prepared to seek new employment - possibly in India because that's where the really good jobs are going.

Sincerely,
(sjct's husband's signature)

I almost feel like attaching a post-it for the mailman tomorrow to let him know that the envelope contains our mutual and passionate rejection of the Bush/Cheney campaign's out-reach.
