Bush wants GTMO rules to apply to all US Citizens

Thu Aug 03, 2006 at 07:27:12 AM PDT

As as result of Rumsfeld losing to Hamdan in the Supreme Court case Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld the public for the first time got a chance to learn what type of justice the detainees in Guantanamo were likely to face: a rigged trial system of justice as it turned out, in which the detainee was said to be guilty before the trial started, was fed into the trial process, told to "shut up" or excluded during trial, and was popped out the other end proven guilty!

Now Pres. Bush wants to extend this same rigged trial system to cover all American citizens.

"Iraq is much worse than people think." -- Nir Rosen.

Yesterday I listened to an interview of reporter Nir Rosen on the radio. Mr. Rosen was being asked, and talking about, the present situation in Iraq.

"The Road to Guantanamo" - a difficult movie for American consumption.

Torture Awareness Month

Now playing at 42 "selected cinemas across the US", this is how the New Yorker critic starts off his review:

"The Road to Guantánamo," Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross's film about three real-life British nationals who were held for two years at the American military prison, left me in a foul mood -- headache, tightness in the chest, erratic pulse. In some ways, the movie is poorly made, and it is possibly disingenuous. What works in it, however, works terrifyingly well. The scenes of suffering and humiliation--the prisoners hammered by their American guards and interrogators--are hell to sit through, and completely convincing. Winterbottom and Whitecross, who are British, clearly want to arouse international indignation toward the United States, and they will. But what others think of us matters less than what we think of our government and of ourselves. Despite the flaws of "The Road to Guantánamo," the issues it raises hang over us like a curse.
